Dawn Makowski – KMC Director
I am having KMC family withdrawals. I missed last month’s meeting due to what I would
call “unrealistic” expectations for closing our company’s financial records for 2016, but can’t argue about a pay
check, one of the best teams I’ve been a part of and the most “funest” culture I’ve been a part of. How many of
you can say you’ve whipped together a few margaritas on a Friday morning? Yes, I know “funest” is not a word,
give it time, it will end up in the dictionary, just like “ain’t”. Grandma use to tell me “ain’t isn’t a word”. I would say,
“ain’t ain’t a word and I ain’t going to say it, I ain’t, I ain’t, I ain’t”. My nickname was “angel”, not sure that’s what
she was thinking at that moment.
A shout out to Barb and Mark for running the meeting. I heard that Barb’s jokes still need some work, but thanks
to both. If you haven’t heard, Barb has decided to move to Italy, just kidding. Barb has decided to step down as
Assistant Director due to bad joke telling, job demands, new house and bad joke telling….and she’s a Viking fan.
In all seriousness, Barb, we love you and thank you for your service to KMC! You will not be missed because you
are not going anywhere and I know how to find you. Barb will continue to assist with New Members and be an
active member. A warm welcome to Mark and I look forward to working with him over the next year.
Speaking of changes, I also want to thank Cindy G for her services as our Activities Officer. She will be seeing
us through the inter-chapter bowling and then passing her torch….to whom? Well, we’re looking for a happy,
energetic, outgoing, Harley enthusiast to facilitate (not do) various KMC events throughout the year. Please reach
out to myself, Mark or any board member if you are interested, we’d love to hear from you. I guess it’s the year for
passing the torch because we are also looking for someone that is “excel” savvy to track star earning volunteers.
This position is our “Keeper of the Stars”, previously aka Activities Officer Assistant, Theresa Leto. Funny,
“Keeper of the Stars is a country song and it’s my wedding song too (Mark Makowski ).
Speaking of “stars” and volunteers. We recognize members who supported both KMC and Hal’s this past year
with a KMC Challenge coin. February has historically been the month that we distribute these challenge coins,
but we are moving this out to the March meeting. We are also working on finalizing how you can earn a challenge
coin with additional Hal’s volunteering opportunities to be announced. We will have that available shortly, post on
the web page, share in the next newsletter and discuss at March’s chapter meeting.

(From The Director Continued)
Are you thinking about riding yet? I am in the planning stages of two long trips, New Mexico and Tennessee (NC) area and of course
one of my favorite KMC rides, annual Ladies of Harley weekend ride. Vicky Bailey and I are leading this event with a favorite
destination, Wisconsin Dells. This will offer plenty of opportunity for riding, shopping, shows and maybe a slide down a local water
slide. The area offers something for everyone, whether you ride or not. If you are a HOG Member, KMC Member you are an LOH
member. We welcome both riders and passengers, and yes, this is for females only. We’re still in the planning stages, but have locked
down lodging. Please see the LOH table to sign up. Information to make your reservations will be forthcoming within the next few
weeks. We have 10 rooms blocked and they will go fast. You won’t be disappointed…..do these girls look like they are “not having
fun”?

“Chapter of the Stars" We are super proud of the activities that KMC offers our members (and beyond), and want to thank all of the members that supported the chapter/dealer this past year through volunteering for our events/rides. You are amazing! As the 2017 calendar starts to fill up with rides and events, we would encourage you to support some of the events by volunteering your time. It is a great way to support the success of the chapter/dealership, as well as gives the opportunity to network and connect with many different members. There are varied ways you can contribute - choose from collecting waivers, selling 50/50, tending bar, highway clean-up, or even joining a committee! If you are new to the chapter/volunteering, let us know and we will pair you with other members to learn the ropes. As you know we reward volunteers with our KMC star patch. It is a proud moment when members from other chapters ask the meaning behind the patch and compliment us on how they look on the vests/jackets. If you haven't started earning the patches - it's time! Additionally, at the beginning of each year we celebrate the members that have volunteered often with challenge coins! Look for this at our next meeting! Again, thanks to all that give their time to the chapter/dealer events. This is truly what makes KMC stand apart from other chapters!

2017 KMC Swap Meet
The fifth annual KMC swap meet will be Sunday, April 23rd at the
Waukesha County Expo Center. The Expo center is located at

VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION We are super proud of the activities that KMC offers our members (and beyond), and want to thank all of the members that continue to support the chapter/dealer through volunteering for our events/rides. As the riding season is upon us we want to share with you a new and exciting change to our volunteer reward program! KMC STARS
The KMC star is a tradition. Stars are earned by volunteering at various KMC sponsored events like the helping at the raffle book parties, selling 50/50 tickets, highway clean-up, and many more! Volunteer one event (except 50/50 and Highway clean-up – you volunteer at 2 of those events) = 1 KMC star (the “star” used currently) Turn in 10 of “regular” stars and receive a “silver star” Turn in 10 “Silver” stars and receive a “Gold Star” (Gold star = 200 volunteer hours!)
To clarify – you WILL need to actually turn in the old stars to
receive the Silver or Gold stars! Stars must be turned into the “Keeper of the Stars”.
CHALLENGE COINS Another way volunteers are recognized is through receiving our chapter challenge coin. On an annual basis we give members that have gone above and beyond a newly designed challenge coin. The criteria for receiving a coin is: Volunteer for two KMC chapter events and for two Hal’s sponsored events (ex; Milwaukee rally). If you are unable to volunteer for two Hal’s events, two additional KMC event may replace one Hal’s event. 2 KMC Events + 2 Hal’s events = Challenge Coin! Or 1 Hal’s event + 4 KMC events = Challenge Coin!

Feb 2017 KMC Raffle Book
It is that time of year to start thinking about warmer
weather, riding, and of course the KMC Raffle Book.
For those of you that are not familiar with the KMC
"Statewide Ride & Raffle Book", here is how it
works. Each year, KMC Members select many places all
over the State of Wisconsin for raffle stops. These
places consist of taverns, restaurants, ice cream shops,
and other places of interest. The objective is for you to
visit and hopefully patronize as many of these places as
possible. When you visit each stop, you will have your
booked stamped, proving that you actually did visit that
place. As you get more stamps, you earn additional raffle
tickets, so it pays to get as many stops as possible.
You will receive your first raffle ticket when you purchase
the “Summer Statewide Ride & Raffle Book”. This will
also be your admission ticket to the “End of Season
Raffle Ride Party” that will include a delicious meal,
entertainment, games, and a chance to win a door
prize. But remember; even if you did not visit ANY Raffle
stops, your first raffle ticket will still give you a chance to
win one of the 150 cash prizes at the party (maybe even
the grand prize). The cost of the book is still $15.00. All
proceeds of this ride will be donated to the “We Ride”
charity.
we will be taking pre-purchase orders starting at the
February’s Chapter meeting. The cost of the books will
again be $15 (checks made payable to AET Foundation).
This includes one entry into the end of year party and one
raffle drawing entry. After the meeting, you will be able to
pre-purchase your KMC Raffle Books at Hal’s and at
March and April’s chapter meetings. Everyone who pre-
purchases a book will be entered into a special raffle
drawing to win a Harley-Davidson
Nostalgic Bar & Shield Beverage Chiller ($250 value)
occurring at the KMC Raffle Book kickoff party and Swap
Meet. Please note: you will not be able to pick book
numbers out of sequence
The KMC Raffle Book kickoff party and Swap Meet will
be held from 11am – 3:00 pm on Sunday, April 23rd at the
Waukesha County fairgrounds, 1000 Northview Rd. In
addition to the special pre-order drawing, we will be doing
50/50 drawings each hour and beer/wine paddles. There
will be food and drinks for purchase, including a full bar,
tap beer and Bloody Mary’s.
(continued next column)
If you have any questions regarding the Swap Meet, including
renting a table, please contact Rob Fehl at the chapter meeting
or email him at [email protected]
If you have any questions regarding the Raffle Book or would
like to pre-purchase a book, please see me at the meeting.
Buy your books early, and I hope to see you all on April, 23rd
for our kickoff party and swap meet. Let’s hope for an early
spring and good riding weather.

Saving One Life Saved Three
When I ask the question: “What would you do if you came upon or witnessed a motorcycle crash”? I often receive the answer, “Call 911” (usually followed up by nervous laughter) I always ask the next question, “And then what”? Do you know what to do? February classes are being taught in Big Bend. Basic - Feb 4th and then a Basic and Advanced classes Feb 25-26. https://www.eiseverywhere.com/ehome/43305?&year=2017&eventtypes=1630&month=2
It is not uncommon for an ambulance to take 15 minutes to arrive at a crash scene and if you are riding somewhere really fun it can take
even longer! We riders can make a difference with proper training so we can feel confident helping until professionals arrive. Has it been a
while since you last took a class? It might be time to update since there have been many changes in treatment including but not limited to:
Tourniquets, pressure points, sucking chest wounds and hemostatic dressings.
Here is a real life example of how Accident Scene Management (ASM) trained rescuers saved one life in Mauston, Wisconsin, which in turn
saved three lives!
An impatient car driver pulled out in front of Jamielynn Sparre, known to her friends as “Twinkletoes”. There was no time to stop. As Twink
hit the car hard enough to blow the rear tire, she was ejected from her motorcycle. She landed face down on the pavement. Her friend riding
behind her, Juliann, slammed on her brakes, managing to avoid Jamie and the car but putting her bike down in the process. The next few
days were a blur. Twinkletoes was taken to the local emergency room first and then was taken by helicopter to the University of Madison
with multiple injuries including a fractured pelvis. She developed blood clots and other complications. Eventually she was transferred to a
hospital closer to her home in Minneapolis, MN. After spending 28 days in 3 hospitals, she was told that she and her husband needed to
delay having children since she was being sent home on 10 weeks of bed rest. Just over one year later, Amelia was born full term and
healthy. Since that time another daughter, Payten, was born. Twinkletoes credits the good and immediate care she got at the scene for
saving her life. Because of the ASM trained people she was riding with they were able to secure the scene, make a good 911 call and they
kept people from moving her. They assisted the EMS when they arrived; giving accurate information that helped them make good decisions
about what should happen next. Twinkletoes says: “I feel like I am alive today because of the people who surrounded me that day. I was
surrounded by angels! The weekend was filled with so much fun and love that ended tragically but could have been worse. It taught me to
be grateful; life is a gift... It's not a guarantee”.
Jamielynn wanted to share her story since she knows that the most likely person to be first at the scene of a motorcycle crash is another
motorcyclist! In 20 years, the ASM organization has trained nearly 30 thousand people but there are 18 million motorcyclists in the USA. Are
you able to be part of the solution? KMC HOG has been recommending ASM classes for 20 years and has more trained bystanders than
any other HOG chapter. It only costs $75 which includes all class materials and is taught by certified instructors. HOG members receive
$10.00 off of classes. All students receive a certificate of completion and a patch to show that they have been trained. Contact
[email protected] or go to www.roadguardians.org for more information, class schedule or to find an instructor.

From The Editor……. Spring keeps getting closer and closer. I can’t wait to get my bike
out. In the mean time I am looking at our Chapter Calendar and
trying to figure out how I am going to get ALL the rides in this
year. I have figured out it is impossible to do them all. I am
going to pick my favorites and go from there. Our committees
and volunteers have been very busy this winter, working to make
sure we have a summer full of events. We have even set up
group rider training to make sure everyone can enjoy the rides.
Come on Spring!!
See everyone on the roads……..

It Pays to Attend

TOURING TIP: RIDING IN FOG Riding in fog - especially when it's combined with rain and darkness - heightens a number of risk factors that prudent motorcyclists usually seek to avoid:
Rider visibility of potential hazards, both ahead and from behind (like being rear-ended by a faster moving vehicle) is severely restricted.
Accumulation of moisture on the windshield and/or glasses further inhibits your ability to see the road and spot hazards.
The ability of other vehicle operators to see you is significantly diminished.
Rider spatial disorientation with the road and its surroundings increases the chance of getting lost and having an accident.
Riders are much more vulnerable if their bike breaks down or runs out of gas.
Visual loss of the horizon can cause misjudgment of the motorcycle's lean angle and a greater chance of low siding the motorcycle on slick pavement.
Emerging from a heavily forested area into fog illuminated by daylight can suddenly cause a whiteout effect, overpowering a rider's wide-open pupils.
And the list goes on. The best advice for riding in fog is simply to not do it; wait until weather conditions improve before heading out. But there are times when it's not practical to do so. If you find yourself caught in heavy fog, with no good alternative for avoiding it, let's consider several strategies for mitigating the increased risk:
Slow down and continually adjust your speed as visibility changes.
Take the most familiar route to your destination.
Make sure you have a full tank of gas before departing.
Check any strapped on luggage to ensure that it is tightly secured.
Use a defogging agent on your face shield and glasses.
Keep your headlight on its low beam setting to avoid light flaring off of the water molecules and further reducing visibility.
Monitor your rear view mirrors for fast approaching vehicles from behind and, if necessary, prepare to take evasive action.
If another vehicle is following too close, tap your brakes lightly to flash your taillight or turn on the bike's flashers, if it has them.
Wear reflective material and bright colors.
Avoid sudden inputs to the brakes or steering, and use engine braking as much as possible.
Follow the taillights of another vehicle, at a safe distance and speed, to reduce any spatial disorientation.
Use the white line on the right side of the road as a point of reference and keep it to your right, particularly when there are on-coming headlights that glare out the centerline in the fog.
Call ahead to your destination and alert someone as to your route and expected time of arrival.
If forced to stop, either by the fog becoming too dense or a mechanical problem, move yourself and your bike well off the road.
Remember it's always safer to anticipate and avoid dangerous riding conditions than to try and mitigate their risk once you are in them. Ride safely! Dewey
CHALLENGE COIN ORIGINS It’s nearly impossible to know the absolute origin of the challenge coin tradition, but per “Mental Floss”…One of the earliest known examples of an enlisted soldier being monetarily rewarded for valor took place in Ancient Rome. If a soldier performed well in battle that day, he would receive his typical day’s pay, and a separate coin as a bonus. Some accounts say that the coin was specially minted with a mark of the legion from which it came, prompting some men to hold on to their coins as a memento, rather than spend them on women and wine (good choice?). I thought it would be interesting to share the history of the challenge coin and what the “challenge” actually means…… Today, the use of coins in the military is much more nuanced. While many coins are still handed out as tokens of appreciation for a job well done, especially for those serving as part of a military operation, some administrators exchange them almost like business cards or autographs they can add to a collection. There are also coins that a soldier can use like an ID badge to prove they served with a particular unit. . In 2009, the Harley Owners Group (HOG) created and made available its own challenge coin to Harley-Davidson motorcycle owners through the HOG members only website, stating: "Those who ride Harley-Davidson motorcycles share a bond in much the same way as those who have served their country with pride. Carrying a H.O.G. National Challenge Coin in your pocket, on your bike or off, is a meaningful way to show your pride of
Harley-Davidson ownership— while also paying tribute to those who serve."
“THE CHALLENGE” The challenge, which can be made at any time, begins with the challenger drawing his/her coin, and slapping or placing the coin on the table or bar. Everyone being challenged must immediately produce the coin for their organization and anyone failing to do so must buy a round of drinks for the challenger and everyone else who has their challenge coin. However, should everyone challenged be able to produce their coin, the challenger must buy a round of drinks for the group. Now you are armed with volunteer knowledge, so go forth and
earn your stars!! Again, thanks to all that give their time to the
chapter/dealer events. This is truly what makes KMC stand apart
from the rest!

WHAT IS ABATE?
In essence, ABATE is a motorcycle rights organization. ABATE’s goal is to give the motorcyclists of Wisconsin a strong united
voice, with regard to their future, their way of life, their safety and their legal rights as a motorcyclist and citizen.
How does ABATE do this? Through the monitoring of proposed legislation and working closely with lawmakers to protect
against enacted laws that would negatively impact our ability to ride motorcycles. Active legislation that ABATE is currently
focused on are: E-15 gas (very harmful to motorcycle engines), right-away violations that cause motorcycle injuries and
fatalities (education and stiffer violator penalties), and black box data access by entities other than the owner (insurance
companies, etc.).
ABATE has also dedicated significant resources to educate the non-riding public to create motorcycle awareness when on the
road. The “Share the Road” program provides education to middle and high schools in Wisconsin so that the students become
aware of motorcycles as they operate their vehicles in the future.
ABATE is inclusive of all motorcyclists no matter the brand, life style, age or gender of the rider. There are many KMC
members that are ABATE members as well. Membership dues are $25 annually. If you have further questions regarding
ABATE please see Mark “Rev” Jorgensen at a KMC meeting or contact him at 414-940-2255.
WHAT DOES ABATE HAVE GOING ON?

Biker Down
We love our KMC family; it's deep and true, so naturally we want to
support them when they are feeling blue.
Biker Down is here, to show them we care, whether they are feeling ill
or injured, they need know we're there.
If you hear of anyone who could use some KMC cheer, please make
it clear.
Contact Coordinator, Roxanne Rick at [email protected] or at
414-342-8416. She will make sure we share our love for any biker
down, through cards, support and other well wishes.
