St. Elizabeth School News
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
During February, we naturally think about Valentine’s Day and all of the
festivities associated with this special day. Valentine’s Day is the celebration of
Love and in John’s Gospel, we are reminded of how much God loves each and
every one of us, “For God so loved the world, He gave His only son.” John
3:16. As we focus on the virtue of love, we are inspired by many meaningful
quotes about love. Martin Luther King Jr. told us that “Love is the only force
capable of transforming an enemy into friend.” In the upcoming month,
teachers have planned various activities in their classrooms that centre on the
virtue of love. During the month of February, students will also receive their
first term report cards and we look forward to seeing parents at our up-coming
parent-teacher conferences. We are also busy with our Kindergarten
registrations. If you know anyone who is interested in coming to St. Elizabeth,
please have them call the school office. On Tuesday, February 28th, the last day
before Lent (Shrove Tuesday), we will again be having our “Pancakes and
Pajama Day.” Students will be treated to pancakes. A very sincere thank you to
the parent volunteers who will assist in making and serving pancakes to the
students. On Ash Wednesday (March 1st), we will be having a school Mass in
the school Gym and ashes will be distributed to everyone. Palms from last
year’s Palm Sunday have been burned into ashes which are then put onto our
foreheads. While the ashes are being placed, the words, “Repent and believe in
the Gospel” or “Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return” are
used. Parents and family members are invited to participate in our Ash
Wednesday Mass at 10:15 am.
We hope to see you there,
Mrs. R. Tropea Principal

LITURGICAL NEWS
Our Ash Wednesday Mass and distribution of the ashes will be held at 10:15 in the school Gym on
Wednesday, March 1st. Thank you to Ms. Menezes and her students, who are planning and organizing this
special Mass. Many thanks to Father Yaw and all the parish staff from Our Lady of Peace Church.
PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES
Parent teacher conferences are an important component of on-going home-school communication and
involvement in your child’s learning. The purpose of Term 1 conferences is to gain a deeper understanding
of progress to date and to devise an action plan to ensure students reach their full potential. Parents are
kindly asked to complete the Parent Teacher Interview request form (which will be sent to your youngest
child), and return it to the school with their youngest child. Report cards will be sent home on Tuesday,
February 14th. The interviews will be held on the evening of Thursday, February 16th and the morning of
Friday, February 17th. Please note that:
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 17th IS A PA Day. THERE IS NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS. THANK YOU.
VALENTINE’S DAY
Students are welcome to celebrate Valentine’s Day by wearing red, white and pink or a combination of any
of these colours.
ME TO WE CAMPAIGN
In the spirit of St. Valentine, ME to WE is organizing our next fundraising campaign. We will be selling
Candy Grams during the week of February 13th to 17th in the school's Library. The nut- free lollipops will
be sold at 25 cents each. Let's celebrate friendship and love by giving each other a sweet treat. The money
raised will support a great cause such as education and clean water in one of the many communities in need.
ME to We is always grateful for your support and generosity.
Thank you!
SKATING DAY
Our final skating day for this academic year will be held on Friday, February 24th. Students are invited to
wear civvies with a loonie or toonie contribution to “The Angel Foundation for Learning.” The Angel
Foundation for Learning is the charitable organization that serves the needs of students in the Toronto
Catholic Dsitrict School Board. Students who choose not to participate should be in school uniform for the
day.
Many thanks are extended to Mrs. Tulino who organizes the schedule for the skating, and who books the rink
and the buses for us as well. Parents are always welcome to come and join in the fun on the ice or to help “do
up” skates. We hope to see you there!
PIZZA/CIVVIES DAY
Our February Pizza/Civvies Day will be held on Friday, February 10th. Thank you to Mrs. Tulino for
organizing our Pizza Days and thanks to all her helpers as well!
UP-COMING DANCE-A-THON We are presently planning a dance-a-thon for Friday, April 7th. Our goal is to raise enough money to pay for
our DJ and for dance classes for each class, which we are planning for the end of April with a professional
dance teacher. We have had these classes for several years, and they provide a great educational and fun
experience for our students. Pledge sheets will be sent home approximately two weeks before the dance-a-
thon. Our aim is for all students to participate! Thank you to Mrs. Tulino and her class for all their help with
organizing this event.
ARE YOU MOVING?
If you are planning on moving and your child will no longer be attending St. Elizabeth School in September
of 2017, please call the office and leave a message with the school secretary. Thank you.
PANCAKE AND PAJAMA DAY
On Tuesday, February 28th, everyone is invited to wear their pajamas and delicious pancakes will be served
as we celebrate Pancake Tuesday. Pancakes will be served in the library. Please notify the office if your child
has any food allergies. A very sincere thank you to all of the volunteers for assisting!
VISITS BY OUR COMMUNITY SCHOOL OFFICER, OFFICER RICH
Officer Rich visited our school once again on Wednesday,
February 1st. He visited our Gr. 1 and Gr. 8 classes. We
appreciated all the special lessons that Officer Rich shares with
us during his visits and always look forward to having him at our
school. Thank you Officer Rich!
Junior Boys' Soccer
On Thursday, January 26th the Junior Boys' Soccer Team competed at St. Demetrius School in their
divisional tournament. The boys played with spirit and determination, giving it their all throughout the day.
As always, they demonstrated true St. Elizabeth spirit. Congratulations to the boys and their coach, Mrs.
Tulino on a great effort. A big thank you as well to all of our parents who came out to drive the students and
to cheer on the team.
