President’s Message

This is the month we celebrate love and romance. Well, quilters have that covered. We have an ongoing love affair with quilt patterns, color, and design. The romance in our hearts is released when we fondle beautiful fabric and are embraced by those warm, soft quilts we crafted. But this February we have so much more love to anticipate. Education Notes

Elva Farrell

WE NEED YOU!, to sign up for our 2015 classes---There’s still time to sign up for Jane Davila’s classes in February. Jane is an author, an artist, a designer, an educator and most im-portantly—a quilter! Jane teaches art quilting and surface design internationally. Have you ever thought about embellishing your quilt but aren’t familiar with all the possi-bilities? Then this class is for you. In the Sur-face Design Sampler class you’ll play with a large variety of materials and supplies - paints-tiks, decolourants, assorted inks, mediums, paints, stamp pads, foil, smooch, angelina fibers and powders - more than a dozen in all. This class is the perfect chance to try out all of the hot new supplies. No pressure, just play! And, the Outer Limits class is another op-portunity to learn a variety of techniques for fin-ishing the edges of your quilts. While some of the techniques are specific to art quilts many are also applicable to your traditional quilts. This class introduces an assortment of at least 20 dif-ferent ways to finish the edges of your quilts, using hand and machine sewing as well as non-traditional materials and supplies. Think outside the quilt! Looking ahead to March. Don’t let the rush of getting ready for the quilt show stop you from registering for one of RaNae Merrill’s spiral quilting classes. This technique is piecing with pizzazz. Take a look on her website at her ‘in-spiralling’ quilts and you’ll surely want to create one of your own. Spiralling is for all levels of experience. RaNae gets you started quickly and easily with no stress, confusion or math skills required. All you need is your creativity and your passion for quilting. In the Spirals Boot Camp class you’ll learn four different types of spirals and how to use them in your quilts and in Magic Mirror Man-dala. You'll be surprised at how simple it is to design and make a Magic Mirror Mandala Quilt - in one day you'll go from mystery to mastery!

MULTI GUILD CHALLENGE

Rose Ryan

This Challenge will have participation with 3 guilds, Manatee Patchworkers, Friendship Knot and Sarasota Modern. It's a group challenge with a group defined as 2 or more peple. The members of a group do not have to be from the same guild. Each group will pick 2 crayons and those two colors must be used in a recognizable amount on the front of the quilt. The max perimeter is 100 inches. It is suggested that each group establish its own working rules such as deadlines, can items be re-moved, can a group member put elements over an item, who will own the quilt and any other guidelines that will make this challenge fun. The quilts are due at each guilds' Holiday Party in December. Each guild will decide if they will be judged by the members at that meeting. The quilts will be displayed at the Manatee Patchworkers Quilt Show in March 2016. If a group wishes to have their quilt judged, the regular fee will be applied by the guild for their quilt show. Ideas for a group quilt – Round Robin, Row by Row, each member makes blocks for the whole, ab-stract, modern, contemporary, straight lines, curved lines – challenge yourselves!

Groups will begin picking colors at the February meeting of each guild. There will be several months to form your groups and pick colors. Look for the table at each guild meeting. A record of groups and colors picked will be kept by Karla Lynch and Rose Ryan. All questions will be answered jointly by Karla and Rose.

Don’t you love a good challenge? Let’s have some fun!

“Quilts for Cruisers” Cass Bowen

For our new members, we have an ongoing charity project in which we make quilts for the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Dept. The quilts go to their Crimes Against Children Division who work closely with the Department of Children and Family Services. The quilts should be 36” x 36” and made with all cotton or natural fiber bat-ting. No synthetic battings, please. The quilt will be a “comfort” blanket for a child in need. Please use bright cheerful kid colors and fab-rics. I would like everyone to sign their first name and Friendship Knot Quilters on the back. Please wash the quilts if you have not prewashed your fabrics. We want them soft and cuddly. Please do not pin your name on the quilt. Thank you all for your contribution to this charity initia-tive. I will be collecting them at every meeting.

Pet Bed Work Group Jane Sanks

The January meeting got off to a tremendous start with 10 of us working to complete 27 pet beds. The group has streamlined the process and everyone seemed to have enjoyed the session. Our next meeting is scheduled for Friday, February 20th from 1-3 PM at the American Red Cross. The March session with be held Friday, March 27th and the April session will be Friday, April 24th. I will bring upholstery fabric, lining fabric and stuffing materials. If you plan to come, please bring scissors. We have three working sewing machines but most of us prefer using our own so please bring your machine if you prefer. Join us when you have time. Your help will always be appreciated. The ARC is located on Cantu Court which is near the intersection of Cattleman and Bee Ridge Roads. If you are unfamiliar with the area, you may call me and I will help you with directions. “NO FRILLS” Winter Retreat. We have scheduled four full days of retreat time. You’ll

have from 9:00 a.m. Thursday morning until 8:00 p.m. Sunday night to sew, eat, and

your fellow retreaters or have fun watching everyone else be productive while you eat

chocolate. What could be better, you say? How about no husbands, no kids, no

housework, no cooking. It’s all about YOU!

Our venue for the retreat is Dayspring Episcopal Conference Center which is just

North of the Manatee River, www.dayspring.dioswfl.org. It’s a lush, wooded setting,

quiet and serene, with cabins and houses for overnight guests. But inside our work-

room and our cabins we don’t have to be quiet and serene. We can be lively and

fun, and we are. Get your girlfriends together for a great time. Wine is permitted in

your cabins. Dress is casual. All meals are provided. Ask anyone who has been

before - it’s the best time!

IMPORTANT REMINDER Quilt Drop Off

All quilts must be dropped off on Feb-ruary 21, 2015, between 10 am and 1 pm. No quilts will be accepted before or after this time. The drop off location will be emailed to all members who have a quilt in the show. The drop off location is in Sarasota. Consider carpooling or sending several quilts with one person, it will speed up drop off considerably. Many people will be in line at 10 am, so it would be helpful to space out your arrivals a little. As long as you are in line at 1 pm, your quilt will be accepted, none after that. Sign up for Quilt Show Jobs Thank you to all who already signed up to work at the quilt show. However, we still have many positions open. Sign up sheets will be available again at the Feb-ruary meeting, please look for them and sign up. Help Us Get the Word Out We hope all FKQG members will email their friends an e-vite to the quilt show. That way, email addresses can be kept just between friends. Linda Pearce will send the e-vite with show information, includ-ing pictures and instructions on how to send the e-vite at the end of January.

Pick Up Your Donor Quilt Tickets and Husqvarna Q100 Tickets Donor Quilt and Sewing Machine tickets are $1.00 per ticket. An envelope with 15 raffle tickets for our Donor Quilt and also 10 raffle tickets for the donated Husqvar-na Q100 is available for all members to pick up at our regular meetings. After you sell all of your tickets, just return the money and ticket stubs at a guild meeting to Dawna Basl. Challenge Quilts Voting at the February 16th Meeting Voting will be held at our February 16th meeting. Remember, there will be cash awards given for first place $50, second place $20 and third place $10. Quilt Show Programs This year we will provide a winner’s list, show layout map and vendor list in lieu of a show program. We may be able to pro-vide additional show information online if there is enough interest. Fabulous Quilt Auction Pam Morris has generously donated a quilt to be auctioned at our show. This stunning quilt was made by, international-ly known and award-winning quilt artist, Carol Taylor. Be prepared to bid on this wonderful quilt. Block Auction The Quilt Block Auction is a great way for the guild to raise money. Pat Sefton

Set Up Day

Set Up Day is the day it all comes to-gether. And with many hands helping, it comes together quickly. The assembly of racks begins at 8:00 am. With racks as-sembled, the quilts are hung, information cards attached and ribbons pinned. To make all of this happen we need many volunteers. For assembling the racks we need at least four able bodied men to climb the ladders, manage the tools and help hang the quilts. Invite your husband or significant others, and your family. When all the work is complete we’ll en-joy a pizza lunch. Let Elva Farrell know if you or another can help with set-up.

needs more quilt blocks, not quilts. In-clude enough for a normal quilt layout, include leftover fabric if available, a copy of the pattern and layout instructions if you have them. Antique blocks would be great if in good condition. Don’t wait un-til the last minute; the Quilt Show will be here before we know it. Door Prizes Sue Balazs is asking for donations to be used as Quilt Show door prizes. She can use any new or like-new sewing notions, un-used patterns, good quality fat-quarters, anything quilting related that is in perfect condition, like mugs or plaques with cute sayings, fun aprons. She would like you to give things that you, yourself, would actually enjoy receiving as a door prize. Consignments – Entry Forms Due by February 6th The Consignment Booth at our Quilt Show gives members a chance to sell their creations at the quilt show, for just a small fee. We have traditional quilts, art quilts, jackets, bags and home décor items. Our members have also had great success in the past, selling their judged quilts. For additional information about the Consignment Booth, please contact Janet Wick. Magazines and Books Please collect your magazines in bundles of 5, tied with string or a strip of fabric. Also, look through your books – hard or soft cover for sale in our booth. Maga-

zines and books are great way to make money for our quilt guild. Tote Bags We still need more tote bags. Use any cute, preprinted fabric from your stash. Instructions were distributed at our meet-ing, ask around, surely one of your friends has a copy. Or, just let us know if you need an instruction sheet, we can email you one. Quilt Appraisals Brenda Grampsas will be joining us again this quilt show, to perform quilt appraisals. You may have a written appraisal for $40, or a verbal evaluation for $10.

Mini-Quilt Silent Auction Cass Bowen

For our new members, we are asking our members to make a small quilt for the Mini-Quilt Silent Auction at the quilt show in March. Each month I report on the number of quilts turned in.

Because all of you are so generous with your time and efforts, we are 18 quilts closer to our goal of 100 for the show. I believe the count is up to 88 after the January meeting. There is still plenty of time to whip up a small quilt for the auction. I will be taking them up until the day of the show. For our new members, the quilts can be pieced, appliquéd or painted and stitched. We are not only accepting mini-quilts made of fabric but also quilts that are hard-mounted on a piece of rigid backing material. Make sure if this is to be used as a wall piece that the buyer has some way to hang it. Not all the buyers will be quilt-ers so a sleeve with a dowel would be nice. Eve-ryone likes to know who made the quilt so please sign your quilts but if you don’t want to sign them, at least pin your name on it. I’m keeping a list so it’s important. Remember maximum total perimeter should not exceed 80 inches. They can be square, rectangular or round. There is no minimum perimeter measurement. Please turn them in to me at the February meeting and call me with any questions you might have. Thanks for such great participation.

Gift Basket Boutique

Mary Nissen and Karla Lynch

As of February 1st we have 30 baskets turned in with 4 or 5 more to go. We feel it’s very im-portant to have over 30 baskets. The cost will be $5 for 30 tickets. If someone wants a ticket for every basket they’ll have to spend $10. The baskets turned in so far are GREAT! A number of pictures are on the FKQG website. Look under Quilt Show then Boutique. Don’t forget to bring to the February meeting an item to put in the Ultimate Chocolate Basket! Thanks to all the members who have con-tributed to a group bas-ket or made a basket on their own! If you’d like to help us out at the boutique during the show contact Karla (941-749-5087) or Mary (941-981-9588).

RETREAT NEWS The “No Frills” winter retreat is coming. Four days to relax and sew after the Quilt Show. Mark your calendar for March 19,20,21, 22. See this newsletter for the reg-istration form. Get your form in ASAP. Can you imagine four uninterrupted days to quilt and sew? Blissful!!

Librarian Needed ASAP

Our current Librarian, Anna Vaugn, is mov-ing at the end of February. That means we need a Librarian now. If you haven’t noticed we have a great library! It’s full of books, cd’s and dvd’s on a wide range of quilting subjects. There is an excellent system in place for track-ing books. There is a budget approved for pur-chases. Volunteers are already in place to help out with the library. The job entails, getting to the meeting early to get the books out of the cabinet and onto the ta-bles. Before the meeting, books are checked in and out. When the meeting starts the books are picked up and put back into the cabinet. Then you can relax and enjoy the meeting. If you enjoy researching and buying new quilting books this is the job for you! Contact Karen Clark at [email protected] for more information. We have a complete job description available for your review. Thanks to Anna for doing a great job being our Librarian. Best wishes on the move.
