There is major activity in all capital cities on the suburban and metropolitan networks and a significant number of projects are under construction or being planned in the mining and resource sectors. All this activity is fantastic for our Rail Industry and the PWI will continue to play an important role in keeping our members updated with changes in rail technology, presentations on projects and providing opportunities for our members to get together for networking. The PWI Committee met earlier this month to map out our planned activities for the year and to agree on our business plan for the Association. It is very pleasing to see the level of enthusiasm and dedication shown by the committee, everyone has now taken on specific roles for which they are accountable to the committee. Our first Quarterly Meeting for the year will be held on Thursday 25th February commencing at 4:30pm at the Masonic Centre in Sydney. The Quarterly meeting will be sponsored by Linsinger Maschinenbau GmbH, one of our new corporate members. Linsinger, whose origins are based in Austria, will talk about "Achieving efficient maintenance of the rolling contact profile of railway track". Linsinger have developed world-leading technology to make this maintenance a controlled process, where the profile and surface finish of the track is predictable and consistent. Please come along and support the PWI, following the presentation and questions there will the usual networking session with beverages and finger food. The Annual PWI Golf Day will be held on 12th March at Bankstown Golf Course, again the event has sold out well in advance. There has also been excellent corporate support and a number of great prizes are on offer. Many thanks to Ken Sherwood and George Stamboulis who set up and run our Annual Golf Day. An excellent sponsorship opportunity exists for one of our Corporate Members to support our prestigious PWI Annual Winter Dinner to be held on 25 June 2010. This event is fast coming one of the top social events of the year. It is a fantastic social and networking evening where partners are encouraged to attend. This high profile event gives companies an opportunity to raise their profile in the Rail Industry, for more details please contact Tania Page on 0402 772 974. The highlight of the year will be our Annual Convention, Dave Roberts and his sub-committee are already well advanced in securing 3 international speakers for this year’s event. The convention will be held on Friday 29th October at Darling Harbour and will be followed by networking drinks and the traditional harbour cruise. I encourage all our members to support the many prestigious awards on offer this year including the 2010 Young Achievers Award. Finally, I would like to welcome all the new PWI Members and Corporate Members who have recently joined the PWI and thank them for their support. There are a number of Silver Enhanced Memberships available for Corporate Members who would like to consider raising their company profile within the PWI. If you would like any further details please contact Tania Page the Membership Secretary at [email protected]. PWI are looking for Sponsors for our Quarterly meetings in 2010, if you wish to sponsor one of our four quarterlies and provide a speaker and technical paper please contact our secretary:

Peter Boonstra -0412 424 438

Achieving efficient maintenance of the rolling contact profile of railway track is a worldwide problem. The Linsinger company from Austria has developed world-leading technology to make this maintenance a controlled process, where the profile and surface finish of the track is predictable and consistent. The track can generally be processed and finished in one pass, meaning track occupation is minimised. The amount of material removed can be varied from 0.1mm up to 5mm or more, depending on requirements. Processing speeds of more than 25m/min have been achieved. The Linsinger milling method is done dry and there is no risk of fire. The powerful dust collection system evacuates the chips and dust, so the method is very suitable for underground and tunnel applications. Paul Philips from Benson Machines, Linsinger’s Australasian representatives will provide an informative presentation and information at our next quarterly meeting.

RAILWAY HERITAGEGlenreagh Mountain Railway is seeking urgent assistance from the community to save an

important part of the Coffs Coast Railway Heritage. They urgently need $13,000 to undertake repairs to the roof of the heritage listed Lowanna Railway Station. They have already raised

$20,000 towards the $33,000 total replacement cost of the damaged asbestos tiles. The roof has weather damage and repairs are urgently required to stop the weather undoing all the hard

restoration work Glenreagh Mountain Railway has undertaken over the years. If you can help donations can be sent to Glenreagh Mountain Railway, PO Box 104, Glenreagh NSW 2450 or by

contacting the Secretary, David Page on (02) 6654 5350 email [email protected]. For further information please refer to www.gmr.org.au SOS - Appeal for Funds

International speakers will present ‘perspectives’ from UK, US and Asia. In response, local speakers will be presenting on projects being conducted by PWI NSW Members overseas and some of the World’s best practice being driven from within Australia. We should mention that due to rising events costs that there will be an increase in the convention cost this year. PWI has absorbed the majority of these increases over the last 5-6 years and it has now come time to pass some

of this cost on to our members. This year’s full day event will be at a cost of $80 inclusive of all food and beverages and GST.
