Welcome to Christ’s Lutheran Church! We welcome the members of BSA Oreland Troop 1 and Cub Pack 88. Join us in the lobby for refreshments and fellowship after the 10:30 am service. May you experience the joy of God’s presence as we worship together this morning. We are blessed by your presence! Enjoy our gracious lobby to greet friends, guests, and visitors before the service. Please sign the guest book in the lobby if you are visiting with us today, and include your address and zip code. Please allow others to enjoy quiet space and time in the pews as they prepare for worship. Our musical prelude begins our worship experience.

We encourage you to use this time to silently prepare to receive God’s Word.

WHEN YOU LEAVE…..Introduce yourself to someone you do not know.

The flowers on the altar today are dedicated by the Polis Family

in celebration of Mattisen Crossan’s birthday!

You may download an electronic copy of the worship program to your electronic device by scanning the QR code on the lobby bulletin board.

Cell Phones - Please silence your electronic devices before entering the worship area. We request that you put your cell phone on “Airplane” mode to avoid any interference with the sound system. An AED is located in the office hallway. There is an automated external defibrillator (AED) in case of an emergency. Large Print Bulletins are available in the lobby, or ask an usher.

Activity Bags for young children are also available in the lobby.

The Service

[Congregational responses are printed in bold-faced type.] ELW: the hard covered service book, Evangelical Lutheran Worship

The Prelude "Come, Thou Almighty King" - Martin

Welcome and Announcements Moment of Reflection

Please stand in body or spirit.

GATHERING The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God.

The Confession and Forgiveness

Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, the eternal voice from heaven,

the anointed and beloved one, the Spirit moving over the waters. Amen. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Silence for reflection and self-examination.

Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved.

In the name of ☩ Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven.

Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. Amen.

THE WORD

God speaks to us in scripture, preaching, and song.

The First Reading Joshua 22:5

Loving and serving God with our whole heart is the cornerstone to building a beloved community where everyone is welcomed.

A reading from Joshua chapter 22. But be very careful to keep the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you: to love the LORD your God, to walk in obedience to him, to keep his commands, to hold fast to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.” Word of God. Word of Life. Thanks be to God. The Psalmody | Psalm 100 Thy Word is a Lamp W&P # 144

Reprinted by ownership of sufficient copies or license #, see page 3.

The congregation will sing the following response:

1Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth. 2Worship the LORD with gladness; come into his presence with singing. 3Know that the LORD is God. It is he that made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Response 4Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, bless his name. 5For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. Response

The Second Reading Hebrews 10:23-25 God calls us to be a beloved community. Loving our neighbor and doing good deeds strengthens our relationships in community with each other.

A reading from Hebrews chapter 10. 23 Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how to encourage one another to love and do good deeds, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Word of God. Word of Life. Thanks be to God.

Please stand in body or spirit.

The Holy Gospel Luke 10:25-37

Jesus tells the parable of the Good Samaritan in response to answering the question: “Who is my neighbor?”

The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. 25Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he said, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" 26He said to him, "What is written in the law? What do you read there?" 27He answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." 28And he said to him, "You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live." 29But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" 30Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. 31Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. 34He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, 'Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.' 36Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?" 37He said, "The one who showed him mercy." Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Please be seated.

The Apostles’ Creed

With the whole church, let us affirm our faith.

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The Prayers of Intercession

Please kneel or sit as you are able for the prayers.

Trusting that God hears us, let us pray for the church, the world, and all those in need.

A brief silence.

God of liberation, you set your people free to serve others. Embolden your church, that we seek justice for the oppressed, share generously your lovingkindness, and live humbly together. Unite us as your children in a beloved community. Inspire us to model the love of the Good Shepherd who humbled himself in service to others. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

God of the universe, your care is evident everywhere—from the foundations of the earth to the summit of the tallest mountains. Reconcile all of creation to itself and repair the environmental destruction caused by human carelessness and greed. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Page 13: February 2, 2020 Fourth Sunday after Epiphany Scout Sunday · 02/02/2020  · Christ’s Lutheran Church exists to welcome people to faith in Christ Jesus; to equip persons with a

13

God of the nations, you desire peace and justice among all people. Deliver us from systems of fear that seek to divide us. Guide our local and national leaders to build community. May their decisions empower and serve the needs of the poor and the disenfranchised. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

God of the oppressed, you raise up the lowly and comfort those in despair. We lift up to you all who are victims of exploitation, discrimination, and greed. We pray for those who are suffering in any way this day. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Here other intercessions may be offered.

God of life, we give you thanks for all those who have died in the faith. Thank you for the examples of our ancestors and the saints who have gone before us. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Confident that you are able to accomplish more than we even dare to ask, we bring these prayers before you, believing in your saving grace revealed in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Peace

The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you.

Let us greet one another with the peace of God.

The congregation shares the greeting with one another saying, “Peace be with you,” or similar words.

Please be seated.
