“These three things will last forever--faith, hope, and love--and the greatest of these is love.”
* CALL TO WORSHIP By CKW, prompted by an online blog post
Love is not a mistake.
Love is not an accident.
Love is not a way out.
Love is God’s way in. Our way in...to relationship.
Love is a risk.
Love is a revolution.
Love makes clear the fear we must work through.
Love brings with it every reason to make such effort.
Love initiates us...
...changes us...
...marks us...
...awakens us to what could be.
And we choose.
We choose the love we cultivate,
the love we elevate,
the love we accentuate. Therefore:
Love reveals how we define our lives.
Love shows us what we are willing to give up.
Love teaches us what we are able to withstand.
Love needs our actions because it starves on words alone.
Love needs our solidarity because it shrivels in isolation.
Love needs our promise because it withers under fickle suns.
Love is our origin, our calling and commandment.
EVERYONE: “Love one another,” by this we will be known.
* OPENING HYMN Be Thou My Vision UMH 451

WELCOME GUESTS! We are so glad you’re here! Please fill out a welcome card, (in the pews)
and let us know how we can serve you or pray with you. A gender-neutral, accessible bathroom is on
this floor; more bathrooms are on the lower level.
PPUMC is a RECONCILING CONGREGATION that seeks spiritual growth through reason,
experience, scripture and tradition. We engage in work that demands justice in the community and in
the world, use inclusive language to explore the many faces of God, believe that music inspires us,
that sharing binds us together, and that reflection and prayer empower us to act. We welcome seekers
of all ages, races, cultures, sexual orientations, gender identifications, and creeds.
CHILDREN are welcome to move or talk quietly during the worship service. There is a
staffed nursery downstairs. Books & crayons are in the space available outside the glass doors
at the back of the sanctuary.
"And you shall LOVE the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your
soul, and with all your might." A tenet of Jewish faith, from Deuteronomy 6:5.
“You will not enter paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you
LOVE one another.” From the Sahih Muslim Hadith, sayings of the Prophet Muhammad.
"Oh holy Great flame, Grant me LOVE... For the thing which is everywhere is
only LOVE, And LOVE is the only thing which is like a soul within us.”
From a Hindu sacred text, Kanda Guru Kavasa.
“Behold, I tell you that when you are in the service of [LOVE ] your fellow
beings, only then are you in the service of [LOVE] your God.” From The Book of Mormon, Mosiah 2:17
"The central value in human life, which we may term " LOVE," means that
which seeks the best for others and the betterment of human life in all its
dimensions. True LOVE means living for others, giving without thought of a
return. Its source is transcendental, beyond the self; the person who practices true
LOVE taps into an inexhaustible reservoir of life.”
From Unification Theory, Mapping Knowledge: The Unification Encyclopedia Project.
“You’re familiar with the written law, ‘LOVE your friend,’ and its unwritten
companion, ‘Hate your enemy.’ I’m challenging that. I’m telling you to LOVE
your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. When someone
gives you a hard time, respond with the energies of prayer, for then you are
working out of your true selves, your God-created selves. This is what God does.
[God] gives [God’s] best - the sun to warm and the rain to nourish - to everyone,
regardless: the good and bad... From the New Testament, Matthew 5:43-46 (The Message)
