The children werefascinated and so engaged learning about the animals, their habits and habitats. Since the visit we havewritten about our 3 favourite animals and wrote factsand information about them. They managed to include

great detail such as a cockroach has 2 brains and canlive for up to 2 years inside a freezer! We were verylucky to have the workshop and gained a lot of newknowledge! By Mrs Taylor.

    Chinese New Year in KS1

To celebrate Chinese New Year, children in Key StageOne took part in many exciting activities. We startingby looking at the story Naming the Years and thenacted it out using costumes and props. We used our

Talk for Writing strategy to retell the story and thenchanged the ending so that the cheating rat didnt win!On Wednesday we were very lucky as we had aspecial visitor working with us. Lip Lee, who grew up inChina, helped us to start our celebrations by telling usall about Chinese New Year. He created origamianimals to help tell a traditional Chinese tale. Thechildren were captivated and enjoyed guessing whatanimal he was going to create next. We learnt all aboutwhy dragons are significant in China and some of usgot to take part in a dragon dance. After that Lip Leespent time with each class to help us make traditionalChinese crafts. The children used a variety of

materials to help them make a concertina dragon inwhich they later named and used to perform a shortstory to the rest of the class. They also chose ananimal from the Naming the Years story anddecorated it with lots of bright, eye-catching colours. We had a thoroughly enjoyable week learning all aboutanother culture; their customs and celebrations. KeyStage One

Year 6 say: Xin Nian Kuai LeXin Nian Kuai Le! To celebratethe Chinese New Year, childrenin year 6 learned about the story

of the Willow Pattern. They wrotedifferent sentencesstatements, exclamations, questions andcommands based around thecharacters from the story. Theythen made their own books andwrote their own stories of the

Willow Pattern. We then read the story about theChinese Zodiac and looked at how each year is namesafter a different animal. The children then retold thetale from the horses point of view as this year is theyear of the horse. In maths, we learned all abouttangramsan ancient Chinese puzzle. We used the 7

shapes to work out how to make different pictures andeven made up some of our own. By Mrs Millican.

Chinese New Year in Year 3To celebrate Chinese New Year, the children watched a PowerPointdisplay which told the story of howeach year is named after a differentanimal. They cut out and decorated a Chinese dragon

which had loops for its body. They coloured in a maskof a horse and made a Chinese red wallet. In Mathsthey made Chinese New Year animals and figuresusing tangrams. Tangrams are shapes that madefrom lots of other shapes. They also used a copy ofthe Chinese alphabet to write their name. The childrenhad a great time completing all the activities. Miss AMcLoughlinYear 3

    Year 4 Chinese New Year

To celebrate Chinese New Year we completed manyactivities, beginning with the traditional New Yearstory, about the animals crossing the river. We lookedat red as a lucky colour and created lucky redenvelopes, although, rather than adding money weincluded a special message for a relative. We alsodecorated them with Chinese symbols and messages.Year 4 also looked at introducing yourself and createdsigns with Chinese greetings on. Finally, to end theweek, and because we are in the year of the horse wedecorated horse pictures and used art straws to makethem dance and move. By Mrs Taylor.
