3Olympic Games Visit

On Thursday 10th February a delegate team from LOCOG, the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games, visited Central Bedfordshire College as part of their tour around Bedfordshire.

The Delegate Team, led by Paul Deighton, CEO of LOCOG, visited Central Bedfordshire Colleges Dunstable Campus on the first leg of their visit to the region. The morning started with staff and students presenting some of the work they had done, this included launching a DVD produced by Media students at the College. The Delegate Team then took part in workshops with the Media students about the processes they went through to produce the DVD, and provided the opportunity for a question and answers session.

Paul and the Team then moved over to Dunstable Leisure Centre where they were able to take part in a sporting event hosted and run by College Young Ambassadors with 50 school children from Hawthorne Lower School in Houghton Regis. This proved to be an excellent opportunity to experience first-hand the work that Central Bedfordshire College has been doing as part of the Get Set network. The visit culminated with a VIP lunch which was prepared by Hospitality and Catering students, which highlights the cross-College work that has been undertaken.

The core aim of Central Bedfordshire College’s involvement in the Get Set network is to embed the values of the 2012 Games into the College and wider community to ensure that the games legacy lives on in the next generation. Ali Hadawi CBE, College Principal, commented, “We are delighted to have been selected by LOCOG as the only Further Education College in Bedfordshire to be visited, due to the massive effort and achievement from our students at Central Bedfordshire College. This has been an excellent opportunity for our students to showcase their talents and skills to the community and build on their experience within their chosen fields to help them in their future. I believe it is essential that we, as an organisation, embrace the 2012 Games and recognise the opportunities this massive event provides for our young people and the community as a whole. I am very proud of our students and the work they have achieved.”

Background on the work Central Bedfordshire College has been doing as part of the Get Set network: Central Bedfordshire College is part of the Get Set network and has been working hard to promote the 2012 Games values across the College and within the community by working with local Lower and Middle schools for various sporting events.

5As part of enabling students from across the College to get involved, the Media students produced a DVD to showcase the exceptional work that has been undertaken in the local community by our Young Ambassadors through leading and managing the various activities.

Alex Robinson, FESCo for Central Bedfordshire College, commented, “Alex Robinson, FESCo, “Students at Central Bedfordshire College have really embraced the opportunities provided by the Get Set network. The work they have undertaken on a voluntary basis has included activities such as our 2012 Games club that we have been running with local Lower and Middle schools. We have 14 Leaders taking part in this programme and it has given them lots of chances to gain new skills and experiences that can help them to succeed in the future. We feel it is very important to let the community know about all of the good work that is already taken place and the Get Set programme has enabled us to do that by enabling the Media students at the College to create a DVD to showcase our work to date.

However, our hard work doesn’t stop here! In March we will start a 2012 Disability Games Club which will involve us working with local schools for children with special educational needs to promote the values associated with the 2012 Games, encouraging more of the community to get involved in a way that appeals to them. To do this we’ve been training up some new volunteers and enabling them to gain qualifications to be able to lead the sessions.

This summer we will also be organising a “2012 Metre Run” in Houghton Regis, for local children and College students to celebrate one year to go before the Olympic games start”.

6Central Bedfordshire College students win 9 awards at Regional AHT Finals

Nine students studying Hairdressing and Theatrical Makeup at the College have won nine awards at the Regional Finals of the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT) National UK Trainee Competition, held at West Kent College on 10th February.

Overall, the College was awarded the highest number of prizes for the Regional Finals. The College also retained places in two of the most prestigious categories from last year’s competition with two students winning joint 1st for the Ladies Cut & Blow Dry due to the extremely high quality of the work; and a clean sweep of the Mens Cut & Blow Dry category with students winning all three places.

The students will now compete at the National finals at The Blackpool Winter Gardens Hair Festival on Monday 14 March 2011. The high profile national competition, which takes place at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens venue every year, attracts more than 600 competitors and up to 6000 visitors.

7Claire Lydon, Hairdressing Tutor from the College, commented on the students’ achievements; “The standard this year was incredibly high, and we are so proud of our students and their efforts so far. The AHT competition is a great opportunity for the students to showcase their skills, and we can’t wait for the National Finals next month”.

8Fundraising for baby Lilly

Staff and Students from Central Bedfordshire College have been working hard to raise money for baby Lilly over the past weeks, with a special guest appearance at Friday’s fundraising event.

Travel and Tourism students have been selling cakes throughout last week and have so far raised over £200, and Child Care students also hosted a whole day of fundraising events on Friday 11 February in the Dunstable Campus main hall. With tea, coffee, biscuits and cakes for sale, name the bear, a raffle and guess how many sweets in the jar, the day got off to a great start. The main attraction of the event was a guest appearance from Kane Ricca, a semi-finalist from Sky 1’s ‘Got to Dance’, who performed a unique high energy modern tap routine to a busy hall. The College contacted Kane about the charity event and he was more than happy to help in any way he could as he is a keen fundraiser, recently helping to raise £1,200 for the British Red Cross.

Other performances of the day included a dance routine to Michael Jackon’s Thriller, singing, and a rendition of Glee’s ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ by the child care students.

Central Bedfordshire College’s football 1st team hammered Chelsea College academy side at Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre.

The away side were feeling confident after beating Chelsea earlier on in the season, in what was then a very close game. Central Beds could not have got off to a better start, with a goal after just three minutes. Bryn Reynolds latched onto a superb 40 yard ball from Sam Peverall to finish to the highest standard smashing the ball into the top corner of the net.

Central Beds continued to dictate the game creating several more chances but were unable to make them count. However, they soon extended their lead with a fantastic move, starting with the keeper and after some great interchanging in midfield and over passes the move was finished by Sam Pervall from outside the box with an expertly chipped effort, once again leaving the keeper rooted to the spot.

Chelsea got back into the game after Central Beds failed to clear their lines, and a shot from outside the box found its way through a crowded penalty box to the bottom corner of the net, making it 1-2 to the away side at half time.

Peveral was on target again at the start of the second half after running onto a perfectly weighted pass from Kyron, making it 1-3, with Chelsea heads starting to drop.

Anderson received the ball 25 yards from goal beat two centre halves as though they were not even there and then coolly passed the ball into the net giving the keeper no chance. Anderson continued to show some exceptional touches throughout the rest of the game.

The last goal in the game came from the right full back Kyron Jackson who went on a run and was picked out by skipper George Higley who played an exceptional ball over the back four. Jackson was left facing a charging goalkeeper who

10completely miss judged the ball, allowing Jackson the simplest of tap in’s.

Football Development Manager Colin Sharpe commented “This was a great result for us today and the manner in which we achieved it was probably the most pleasing. We played some excellent football and we were patient on possession which really worked in our favour. We were almost faultless in our performance, which is great. Sam Peveral, Josh Gooding and Baynole Fasida had their best performances of the season.”

Central Beds 2nd Team win the League

On the same day as the Chelsea match, the College second team also secured the title in the SESSA College and University League. This was an exceptional achievement making it two consecutive titles in a row.

Central Bedfordshire College comfortably beat Southwark College 4-1 with goals coming from Terry Campbell, Tom Holliman, David Stewart and Jordan Riley.

The 2nd team will start their cup competition with a home game against Barnfield College.

11French Exchange Programme

Throughout January and February different departments around the College hosted some French students from the Lycée Professionnel Gambetta in Bourgoin-Jallieu, which is twinned with Dunstable Town.

The visit is an exciting opportunity for the students who undertook a 4 week work placement within different areas of the College. This not only enables the students to gain some practical experience of working life in England, but also gives them an ideal opportunity to practice their English language skills.

Valentina Musliu, one of the work placement students, commented, “I was delighted to spend these weeks at the College. I really liked the atmosphere and found that English people are very friendly. I enjoyed my work placement and learned a lot during the few weeks that I was there. Good luck to the whole team and I hope to see you again soon, I will miss you!”.

The exchange is a long standing event and has now been going for 22 years. Thank you to all staff involved in this important partnership for the College.

12Local basketball legend returns to coach future stars

Central Bedfordshire College are extremely excited to welcome back a local basketball legend to head up a new Basketball Development Programme.

The programme will be delivered by former international and professional basketball player Dru Spinks. Having played professional basketball for over 12 years in the BBL Championship, making him the longest serving player in the league, and having represented England 25 times, Dru knows what it takes to be the best and is the perfect role model for up and coming players.

The Programme is aimed at young people in the local area who have a keen interest in playing basketball and gaining qualifications. The programme will run at 3 levels. Starting at Level 1 for beginners with talent, through to Level 3, opening the course up to those of all skill levels and ability.

The programme allows students to nurtur their talent with the possibility of turning professional but can also lead on to Academic progression. Students who work hard and obtain their qualifications may be accepted to University possibly being offered scholarships in this country and abroad.

The Basketball Development Programme is built up of 6-10 hours of specialised coaching and training per week, and also includes fixtures against other colleges and universities, weekly position specific and individual skill workouts, weekly strength and conditioning session to become a more, explosive and efficient athlete, an opportunity to achieve National Governing Body recognised coaching and officiating Qualifications, match and training analysis to help you improve your performance and game knowledge.

If you know anyone who has got what it takes, come down to the next trial at Central Bedfordshire College’s Houghton Regis campus, Parkside Drive on the 20th April. The trial begins at 12:00.

13College students visit RAF base in Brize Norton

Students from Central Bedfordshire Colleges BTEC National Diploma Travel and Tourism and Cabin Crew courses recently visited RAF base Brize Norton. The day was set up to be enjoyable yet educational for all involved. With the main purpose of giving students a feel for what it is like to work in the industry.

Students visited most areas of the site, including the terminal building to view a working environment where they participated in some crew training with an RAF instructor.

RAF Education Officer Ian Noakes was on hand for most of the day to explain what was going on around the students, what the facility was used for and to answer any questions the students had. The students also had a tour of a Tri-Star aircraft. Travel and Tourism students Angela Lucci and Jasmine Brand commented, “It was an extremely useful trip as it will help us with our course work and it also inspired students to consider joining the RAF in the near future perhaps becoming part of the cabin crew.”
