John Fish a developer with a long visionNow Chairman of Greater Boston Chamber

It’s safe to say John Fish already has a lot onhis plate, running Suffolk Construction Co.and sitting on a long list of boards that directMassachusetts business groups and nonprof-its. But that list is likely to grow a littlelonger soon.

The executive committee of the GreaterBoston Chamber of Commerce board ismeeting Tuesday morning, and I’ll bet youdollars to doughnuts it recommends Fish tosucceed Hill Holliday chief executive KarenKaplan as the chamber’s next chairman inthe spring.

Fish owns a very big construction businessthat generates about $2 billion a year in rev-

enue. He was one of Tom Menino’s favoritebuilders, a rain-making distinction thathelped Suffolk secure work as contractor fora long list of high-profile Boston projectsfrom the Opera House to Millennium Place, the 60-story tower under development at theold Filene’s site downtown.

Fish has been a prominent businessmanabout town for some time now, but his recentdegree of activity blending civics and eco-nomics is something different.

Two weeks ago, Fish attended his first meet-ing of the Federal Reserve Bank of Bostonboard as its vice chairman, a role that putshim in line to become chairman in two years. He recently became the chairman of a com-mission exploring the possibility of bringingthe Olympics to Boston in 2024, a far-fetched idea he has promoted energetically.

Fish remains a founding member of theMassachusetts Competitive Partnership, asmall and very exclusive group of big-busi-ness chief executives working on economicissues statewide. He stepped down as thepartnership’s first chairman last year.

All those roles, along with his involvementwith lots of large nonprofits, includingBoston College and Brigham and Women’sHospital, and small charities, like BostonScholar Athletes, make Fish the most civi-cally active and widely connected Bostonbusinessman since Jack Connors, a compari-

son he dismisses. “There will never beanother Jack Connors,” he says of someonewho has clearly been a role model.

Still, there is this question: Why does JohnFish want to be chairman of the BostonChamber of Commerce? And, yes, he real-ly does want the job.

I got two distinctly different answers whenI talked to him about it. The first is a blendof civic altruism and commercial realism, aiming to do something worthy whileacknowledging his involvement in every-thing from a Boston Olympics commissionto the Chamber of Commerce benefits busi-ness at Suffolk.

Fish, 53, has been running his company forthree decades now. He says that over theyears he’s become interested in broadereconomic and social concerns. “I realizethe world is not about building buildings,”says Fish. Article Continued on BlogHere
