More than 80 boys between the ages of 11 and 18 attended the free camp, including around 50 first-time participants. Young cowboys came here from seven states outside of Texas. Miller, the head coach of the Sam Houston State rodeo team, said his rough stock camp has grown tremendously over time, with only 18 participants in the camp just six years ago. Miller, who has coached the Bearkats to several national championships in the recent past, attributes much of the camp’s growth to the cowboys who have previously participat- ed in the camp and gone on to become members of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. “Every year we’ve been building on our successes,” Miller said Saturday. “The growth has really came from the success of our students, as well as coaching at Sam Houston and winning national titles at the university level.” The participants of the camp got the opportunity to learn how to compete in several different rodeo events, including bull rid- ing, bareback riding and saddle bronc riding. Miller and his wife Tammy both emphasized that the camp is not just about teaching young men how to be successful rodeo athletes, it’s also about teaching the word of God and helping each camper grow as a person. “One of our biggest focuses though is for them to be a cham- pion outside the arena, not just inside the arena,” Tammy Miller said. “We’ve had kids like Taylor Price and Bill Tutor, who is an Academic All-American, who are college graduates and pro- ductive citizens as well as champions in the arena,” added Bubba Miller. “We make sure that we try and center everything around the Lord.” Bubba Miller decided he wanted to train others in the sport of rodeo and encourage them to pursue their dreams after his days in the arena ended. “At the end of my rodeo career, I just wanted to give back to the sport that paid for a complete education for myself. I have a love and a passion for the sport and me and my wife want- ed to give back and give other rodeo athletes the proper train- ing for a successful career,” he Visit us online: www.itemonline.com 50 cents Monday, May 26, 2014 Ready for a weather change?
