We were able to get a sneak preview of the 4 trends for 2016 at the annual Society of American Florists convention this year and were instantly inspired to create our own interpretations. The Elite Team

Family RootsFounded in 1991 by industry pioneer Peter Hannaford, The Elite Flower has grown from a small 1 hectare rose farm in Colombia to nearly 700 hectares spanning the world. Despite this rapid growth and scale, nearly 25 years later Elite still remains a privately owned family farm. In fact, the largest privately owned flower farm in Colombia. As the company continues to grow, the family values instilled by Peter have only

grown stronger 4

A second generation industry innovator, owner Juan Carlos Hannaford leads the family flower farm into the modern age.

FamilyRoots

Even as a child Peter Han-naford was interested in plants. After studying at Somerset Agricultural College in the UK, Peter returned to his birthplace of Colombia to work for a dairy farm which also grew gladioli. Recognizing that the local Colombian market was saturated, Peter started wondering how he could export flow-ers to northern regions during their winter months. His curiosity eventually lead him to co-found Jardines de los Andes, which today is the world’s largest grower of alstro-emeria and one of the largest growers of chry-santhemums.

In 1991, now on his own after stints with several other companies since Jardines de los Andes, Peter planted a half hectare of Meilland rose varieties and another half hectare of various other origins under the name Elite Flower. Soon after, Peter entered into an agreement with Rosen Tantau, a prestigious German breeder, to help them select the rose variet-ies that were best suited to be grown in Colombia and Ecuador. Today, Elite tests nearly 200 varieties each year of which only an average of 4 are brought to commercial production after 4 years.

Appointed to run the daily operations of the company, along with sales and market-ing, Peter’s son Juan Carlos has grown Elite’s market reach to all aspects of the floral industry including wholesale, mass-market and e-commerce. Now with addi-tional growing operations located in Ecuador and Africa, Elite offers an ever expanding array of floral products including everything from traditional favorites to unique novelties.

The foundation’s elementary school provides over 700 students with a quality education along with books, school supplies, 3 meals a day and transportation in an effort to promote healthy emotional and intellectual development while nurturing strong social skills and ethical values. The foundation also works closely with area public educational institutions of-fering middle and high school programs so students can continue their education. 6

In 2008 Floriculture International Magazine profiled Peter Hannaford where he was asked the question, “What are the essentials of flower exporting?” To which he replied, “Having good people work for you and making sure they are happy to work for you.” Peter made sure that all employees, at all levels, were treated as family which continues to be a core value of Elite Flower. Established in 2000 by The Elite Flower partners, The Fernando Borrero Caicedo Foundation’s mission is to pursue and promote the general well-being of The Elite Flower’s employees and their families through housing, health, recreation, education and culture initiatives.

The Elite Flower’s commitment isn’t only to their people, but to Mother Earth. Peter was very interested in biologic issues, bio-controls, environ-mental management, plant soil and water relations, all of which play an im-portant role in maintaining the farm’s balanced ecosystems. Scientists are hard at work in Elite’s state of the art laboratory facility researching and developing environmentally sound ways to control pests, harmful bacteria and fungus.

WE areCertifiedInitiatives such as using various citrus and native plant oils in place of insecticides, growing ben-eficial fungus to combat harmful fungus, and using Integrative Pest Management to ward off destructive species such as spider mites have drastically reduced the need for chemical con-trols. These initiatives have been so successful, especially with the fungus laboratory, farms across Colombia are requesting to purchase these beneficial controls from Elite.

EliteLABThe Elite Flower’s research laboratory is leading the industry in environmen-tally friendly pest and infection management. The dedicated fungus lab was established in 2008 with a mission to reduce the number of pesticides used. Scientists were able to isolate beneficial fungus which helps combat destructive fungus. The laboratory currently prod-uct 15,000 liters of benefi-cial fungus each week which has reduced the need for market fungicides by approximately 30%.

EliteLABSpider mites are almost too small to be seen with the naked eye, but can wreak havoc on orna-mental plants, especially roses. There are several ways to control spider mites including insecti-cides, but as luck as it, spider mites have many natural enemies. As an alternative to using harmful and expensive chemicals, the labora-tory at The Elite Flower employs Integrative Pest Management by breed-ing and releasing plant-safe predatory mites that kill the destructive spider mites.

Elite is the leading grower in South America offering a multitude of gor-geous flowers for your designer to be the creative genius they are. Here, Elite's core products are simply acces-sorized with natural and metallic ele-ments. These designs were photographed on the famous grounds of Rosen Tantau located on the property of Elite's headquarters just outside of Bogota, Colombia.
