FarmSight Focus - Jeff RichingsJeff started with Farol in 2002 at Pewsey dept (shortly afterwards moved to Shefford) and worked up through the work-shop ranks and become a key member of the service team. Jeff trained as a specialist on the sprayer products and followed this through to LTA (Land based Technician accreditation) level 3 then progressing to workshop Foreman at Shefford. In 2014 Jeff took on the product sales specialist role for the Farol Group, it soon became clear that Jeff’s knowledge and enthusiasm for the technology made him the perfect candidate to head up the Farmsight department. Since 2014 Jeff has sold 37 sprayers (Self Propelled and trailed) and now has a team of four that actively promote and support the future of farming.
“ ”It’s incredible to see how much technology now exists in Agriculture today from when I started out in the industry in 1993. Back in 2002 when I joined Farol I never imagined technology would one day be my fulltime job let alone employ a team of 4 in Farol FarmSight, our technology department that I now manage. I love the daily challenges and fast moving progress working to improve efficiencies into everyday farming practices for our customers.” - Jeff Richings, FarmSight Manager

*When fitted during an aircon service (price listed above).
20% OFF ALL GENUINE CAB FILTERS*Poor flow from the vents even though the fan is flat out? It could be that the evaporator (the radiator under the operator seat) is blocked due to poor/dirty cab filters. This debris can build up over time so the effects to the air flow can be slow to see. Not only can this be costly to put right it makes for uncomfortable operating conditions in the cab.
Is your aircon system working effectively ready for summer? Our aircon service includes both “before” and “after” testing following the A/Con regas to ensure the system is working as it should be. Our trained A/con technician can recommend additional servicing to help improve the system performance.
Over time the gas in the aircon system can deteriorate and moisture can build up in the receiver drier filter. This reduces the cooling efficiency of the system and can lead to expensive repairs to the compressor and valves. Replacing this filter with a genuine John Deere part is a simple process and can be carried out on-farm or at your nearest Farol depot.
Technician Focus - Richard ClarkeRichard Clarke has worked for Farol at Byfield for 5 years and worked as an Agricultural engi-neer for 15 years. Richard has recently achieved his LTA 3 accreditation which is testament to the wide variation of machinery he works on. Richard has been paramount to the success of the Byfield depot and has been a key engineer in the supporting the harvest equipment during the season especially with his specialism on Large Square balers.
He also trained on our Manitou product and has helped grow the groundscare servicing in the Byfield area.
”I really enjoy the variety of machines I get to work on from a Large frame tractor to the precision nature of Golf club machinery. Farol and John Deere are really pushing the boundaries with technology with the use of JDLink and Service Advisor Remote which leads to an exciting and interesting future for our Industry.- Richard Clarke, Farol Technician

Technician Focus - Iain Mackinnon
“ ”
Let one of our highly training staff visit your combine in-season and work with you to get the best performance from your machine. As well as ensuring the mechanical aspects of the combine and header are best set for the crop, we will make sure you understand the technical features of the combine to make sure you are using the technology most effectively.
Based at Milton Common Iain Mackinnon has been working for Farol for 15 years. Iain’s experience was originally in construction having worked in the civil engineering field. When Iain moved to Farol he undertook training and applied himself to all aspects of farm machinery repairs and learning on the job. Training together with Farol, Iain has an accumulated an impressive training portfolio for all Farol’s main franchises. This means Iain work can encompass all product lines. Its been a natural progression but now Iain specialises in harvest machinery, in particular combine harvesters.
I do enjoy working on combines. There is enormous satisfaction knowing that I have helped, in a small way, the farmer to get all his hard work from the field. Best of all ,I get to work on “big boys toys” everyday, travel around the countryside meeting new and interesting people and work on some of the most advanced John Deere product. - Iain Mackinnon, Farol Technician

Callum joined our Midhurst branch in July 2016 immediately after finishing his GCSE exams to start his John Deere apprenticeship with Farol. Callum has a passion for the agricultural machinery trade, he has recently restored his own Ferguson TEF20 tractor in his spare time at home.
I wanted to join Farol due to the appeal of the great reputation the John Deere apprenticeship scheme has. I have now nearly completed my first year of my apprenticeship and have so far thoroughly enjoyed the course material and the training I’ve had at the Farol depot and with the technicians from the Midhurst branch. I am looking forward to completing the next two years of my apprentice-ship. - Callum Stanton, Farol Apprentice Technician
I wanted fixed costs on my machines and to protect my tractor investment. I know that brakes are a wearing part of my tractor and if they are not checked can lead to expensive repairs. I choose to have the brakes checked and replaced as part of my service agreement with Farol- Steve Miles, Farmer & Contractor near Aylesbury, Bucks

FarmSight Customer Study
Since taking delivery of the product in July, Rob Redman, of RJR Contracting, and his team have spread around 11,000 tonnes of Lime, Chalk and Fibrophos with one machine across Bucks, Oxon, Warwickshire, Berkshire, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire in 2016.
Having been approached by Needham Chalks to carry out spreading taks for them, Rob purchased a variable rate KRM Bredal lime spreader through Farol Ltd to work alongside the Gen 4 CommandCenter Premium Activation in his John Deere 6195R tractor for his spreading needs.
“It’s one of the best moves I’ve made for my business” Rob says.
Using a JDLink Connect subscription, which forms part of Rob’s Connected Tractor Package, he has been using the Wireless Data Transfer element to be able to send and receive the variable rate files created by Needham Chalks and Soyl.
“The tractor can be out spreading the day’s work and we can already send him the files for the
next day or the next job whilst he is working.
Luke Ward of Farol FarmSight and Freddie Rolt of Needham Chalks have been working together during the season with Freddie sending the map files to Luke for him
then to send on to the tractor saving Rob time in a busy season and again making full use of this Connected Tractor Package.
“The support from the FarmSight guys has been absolutely brilliant, Luke and Jeff have been blinding and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without them. Both products have performed almost faultlessly across the season.”
“Work is carrying on through the winter as the season has been good and dry and this should hopefully continue into the spring and will may well be looking at a 2nd variable rate spreading machine in the future.”

There has been a lot of talk lately of self-driving cars, but farmers have already been making good use of self-driving tractors for more than a decade—in part due to a partnership between John Deere and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) on GPS receivers.
The story, featured in the latest issue of NASA Spinoff, coming out Dec. 5, starts with GPS which was still new in the mid-1990s when John Deere, based in Moline, Illinois, began using it for precision agriculture. The company combined GPS location data with readings from sensors on a harvesting combine to determine the crop yield on different parts of the field.
Such information can help farmers allocate future resources and determine which seed varieties and management practices are the most productive. But John Deere wanted to go a step further, to create a system
How NASA and John Deere Helped Tractors Drive Themselves
that could actually guide the tractor autonomously. The challenge was that uncorrected GPS can be off by up to about 30 feet due to data errors, drift in the GPS satellites’ internal clocks, and inaccurate orbital parameters.
Scientists at JPL, where the first global tracking system for GPS satellites had been developed, were already working on a crucial ingredient: a tool to stream satellite tracking data in real time via the Internet, rather than collecting it intermittently by phone lines.
Thanks to a major funding infusion from the Federal Aviation Administration, which wanted to provide pilots with reliable GPS data, the JPL team was able to develop the necessary software, says Yoaz Bar-Sever, who was supervisor of the Orbiter and Radiometric Systems group at JPL at the time.
It was “a breakthrough capability,” recalls Bar-Sever. “We were approached by many companies” — one of which was John Deere
John Deere had been working on its own technology for correcting GPS signals in cooperation with another company, NavCom, which John Deere later acquired. By 2003, the company developed a self-guidance system that was accurate down to an inch or so.
However, the system wasn’t entirely reliable, as its radio signal could go down or be lost behind a hill, says Terry

Pickett, currently manager of the Advanced Engineering group at John Deere Intelligent Solutions Group. Moreover, it was expensive and required installing one or more signal towers.
So in 2004, John Deere tried something different, modifying its StarFire GPS receivers so they could tap into NASA’s global network of ground stations and incorporate JPL’s software — thanks to NavCom’s 2001 license with JPL for its GPS-correction software and a contract to receive data from JPL’s global network of reference stations.
“John Deere based their system on our technology lock, stock, and barrel,” Bar-Sever says. “We linked our systems quite tightly.”
The JPL-linked system was accurate down to a few inches, but more importantly, with this solution, John Deere could finally offer self-driving agricultural equipment to its customers worldwide.
Machines all over the world could “guide themselves with a lot less overlap, and that meant a lot to our customers,” Pickett says
Typically, when a tractor crisscrosses a field, the rows overlap by about 10 percent, Pickett explains. This means a significant portion of the field receives double the necessary seed, fertilizer, and pesticide, and the job takes longer than necessary.
“Self-guidance had a big impact on the cost of the product farmers were producing, the amount, and often the quality”
Eliminating overlap also cuts down on fuel costs, wear and tear on the machinery, and tractor operator time, since an operator is required to monitor operating conditions and avoid collisions. And higher accuracy also means more reliable yield maps.
“Self-guidance had a big impact on the cost of the product farmers were producing, the amount, and often the quality,” Pickett says.
By 2015, he estimates, around a third of the crop acreage in North America was being farmed using self-guidance systems, as was up to half of the farmland in Europe and South America and more than 90 percent in Australia.
All the while, John Deere was perfecting its own means of precision guidance, and the company let the NASA license expire in 2015, now relying on its own system.
But Pickett says the accuracy that originally came from the company’s partnership with JPL not only gave rise to significant improvements to John Deere’s guidance technology but also served to help popularize the notion of autonomous precision agriculture itself. “Guidance was what drove it, and what drove guidance was accuracy,” he says.
AUTONOMOUS BENEFITS
For more than a decade, John Deere’s StarFire GPS receivers used NASA’s global network of ground stations and the JPL software, which the compa-ny licensed, to enable self-guided tractors. Among other benefits, accurate GPS helps farmers manage their fields, for example enabling more accurate observations and crop mapping.

U.S. corn farmers are proving themselves to be quick learners.
Growers producing the grain on big plots -- those bigger than 2,900 acres -- are using precision-agriculture methods at twice the rate of the nation’s farmers overall, a U.S. Department of Agriculture study released Tuesday said. Their savvy could be paying off. The agency estimates that the new technologies are helping to increase profits.
A three-year slump in grain prices has eroded agriculture incomes, sparking more farmers to adopt the so-called precision-agriculture methods to help increase efficiency. Companies including Deere & Co. are joining the race to create new products for the market that Goldman Sachs Group Inc. estimates could be worth $240 billion by 2050. The technologies encompass everything from GPS-guided tractors that reduces human error and fatigue to granular data analysis that enhances planting decisions.
“Precision-agriculture technologies require a significant investment of capital and time, but may offer cost savings and higher yields through more precise management of inputs,” David Schimmelpfennig, an agricultural economist at the USDA in Washington, wrote in the report.
About 80 percent of large U.S. farmers are using GPS devices to steer their tractors, while between 70 percent
How Ag Tech is Boosting Farm Profitsand 80 percent use yield mapping to determine the most productive areas of their land, the USDA estimates. Between 30 percent to 40 percent of growers are utilizing variable rate technology, a process that lets them know how much fertilizer, seed or crop protection to apply, when and where.
Average size U.S. corn farms using GPS mapping see about a 3 percent increase in operating profit and the gain for net returns is almost 2 percent, the agency said. Guidance systems boost operating profit
by 2.5 percent, and variable-rate technology raises it by about 1.1 percent, the study showed. The USDA said it used data over a 17-year span, starting in 1996, for its study.
Even with the profit gains, the impact on labor costs varied, the report showed. Small farms saw their costs drop after employing the technologies, while expenses for large ones climbed -- that may be because of increased employees hired to help implement the methods, the USDA said.

• The average sprayer is 90% inefficient (i.e. only 10% of the chemical hit the plant source)
• Chemicals are becoming more expensive and plants more resistant meaning more applications of spray and more cost.
• A tiny droplet 100 microns in diameter (about the diameter of a human hair) takes 11 seconds to fall 10 feet. At 50 microns, it takes 40 seconds to fall that far
• With such high potential for incorrect application, it’s important to get your machine setup and optimised for your specific crop with pressure, droplet size and application rate all correctly calibrated. See below for how Farol can help optimise your machine this season.

“By the nature of a telehandler the boom wear pads will wear over time as the boom moves. Therefore they require measuring and adjustment to keep the correct clearance to enable smooth operation of the boom and also ensure protection of the expensive inner and outer boom sections.
