While that summer vacation is long gone for most of us, it doesn’t mean we can’t be excited about the month. Whether your perfect summer day is a barbecue in the backyard with family, a day on the links with friends or, like me, a day in, on or around the lake, I hope that you get out and make the most of this summer. We all know that we deserve it after the other nine months of the year.
There is a LOT going on this summer. Jade Presents has plenty of concerts coming up that I’m quite excited for. If you like theatre, MSUM’s Straw Hat Players have a lot of shows this month, Trollwood’s performance of “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying” is sure to be a fun, family experi-ence and the Gooseberry Park Players’ “The Sound Of Music” hopes to bring new life to the classic musical. Don’t forget about all the awesome patios
around town to sit back and enjoy a drink or two with friends.
We hope that we are able to help you find those great events happening in the area. We’ve amped up our event calen-dar, added drink specials to the back of the magazine and we hope we expose something you didn’t know existed in this great city.

One of the biggest events of the year moved downtown this year. To celebrate its tenth birthday, the Fargo Marathon kicked off the 5K on First Ave and moved the 10K, half and full marathon starting line to the Main Avenue Bridge. It was a sight to see 21,000 people gather in downtown Fargo.

Hundreds of people from across the country came to Fargo to learn about mobile technology. This two-day summit that was hosted by Myriad Mobile hoped to help companies create mobile strategies in the aim of keeping them above the competition. Not only was it an educational experience, but the organizers knew how to show their guests a good time.

The Fray has found international success with meaningful songs like “How To Save A Life,” “You Found Me” and “Never Say Never.” They are on tour right now to promote their new album “Helios” and will be headlining at
Bluestem Amphitheater with Barcelona and Oh Honey on June 21. We caught up with lead singer Isaac Slade to discuss their new album, fatherhood and heart-to-heart conversations with the President of Rwanda.

You are a recent father. How has that changed your life?“Ben (Wysocki), the drummer, and I had our first kid like 12 days apart. We both jumped onto the train simultaneously and then we both jumped onto a plane simultaneously and went on the road. We’re both just figur-ing it out. I just got off the phone with my wife… She’s doing the single parent thing but there are plenty of single parents out there that are doing the same thing.” Do you have any highlights in your career so far?“The one that probably stands out the most was I went to Cape Town to write a little bit and travel a bit before our third record ‘Scars and Stories.’ I did some writing down there for four or five days and then my friend said, ‘Hey, I’m going through Rwanda on my way home. It’s like a 24-hour layover if you want to come with me.’ I was on the record label’s time so I was like, ‘Sure.’ I get to Rwanda and we landed at Kigali around 7 p.m. and it was a whirlwind from 7 p.m. to 7 p.m. the next night… The next morning, my friend is an amazing kind of older guy from Colorado Springs, and he had a meeting with the President of Rwan-da and he asked if I wanted to go. I said, ‘Sure.’ I brought my guitar and thought, ‘Maybe I’ll play a song for him or whatever.’ The secretary guy said, ‘Actually, it’s his birthday. It’ll be perfect…’ We sat with him. My buddy did his stuff and talked through a bunch of stuff and all these improvements for the country. I got to ride shotgun while he talked about how to help Rwanda and make it a better place and bring all these businesses and technologies to it and all these crazy things that I never get to see… He said, ‘Hey, are you going to play me a song?’ I was like, ‘Oh jeez’ so I played him one of our songs… I asked him at the end of it, ‘Can I ask you, how do you handle the loneliness of this spotlight that you have?’ I feel that a little bit. I have this very different life. I’m the only one that’s holding that microphone. Even the closest guys to me in the band, my closest friends or my wife, they’re still not holding that microphone. It’s an isolating place and you get pretty lonely, which no one ever talks about. His Chief of Staff sat up really straight like, ‘Oh my god, I can’t believe you just asked that.’ The President kind of looked away from me for what felt like an eternity. It was probably eight seconds. He was probably trying to decide if he was going to an-swer this punk-ass kid from Colorado. He
turned to me and he just talked for 25 – 30 minutes on his stance on leadership and his challenges to connect with regular, plain old everyday people from this weird pedestal they call President… It was one of the most humanizing mo-ments for me. Suddenly, he humanized every king or president I’ve ever seen. Oh my god, they’re all just people. Bono is a guy. The king of Jordan is a guy. Obama is a guy… It rang thunder all the way through the halls of my heart realizing we’re all in the same boat. We all have stories… Actually, that moment kind of inspired ‘Heartbeats’ from our third record.” Just out of curiosity, what song did you sing him for his birthday?“I sang him ‘How To Save A Life.’ I was hoping that he would have heard any of our music. (Laughs) He said, ‘Oh, I think I’ve heard that one before.’” Is there anything you want to say to the people of Fargo who will be coming out to your show?“We have two different lives. One is the stu-dio life where we sit and carefully capture these songs, how they sound in our heads, and kind of jangling around in our souls. We try and take snapshots of the elusive ghosts of these songs. That is the record that people hear. Our other life is this spon-taneous, sort of cowboy, part of our life. It’s on stage in front of a crowd, it happens once and it never happens again… Out of the two lives that is my favorite part of this whole job, getting to stand up on stage creating a moment with a crowd and with people. We’ve put our records out there for so many years, but we’ve never had the chance to actually come and play. I’m really just thrilled beyond belief to do that other part of what we do with you guys.”

I heard that you have some family here in Minnesota, is that correct?“You know, my brother fell in love with Minnesota. We’re a water skiing family from southern California and when I made my first album in Lake Minnetonka, we rented a remedial reading summer camp, which was the only place that would rent to people that looked like hippies or black people. In 1971, we staked our Minnesota roots. Steve (brother) fell in love with the idea that he could water ski in all those lakes, so he moved, became part of the Lamont Crans-ton and Willie Murphy and the Bees music scene after I made my first album there in 1971. So I was, every summer, coming through vacationing with my brother, and then my mom married a man whose family lives in Minnesota as well, so I’ve got some roots there, but I really have to admit it’s more in the summer time (laughs).” You’ve performed with so many different people. Is there anybody that you have yet to perform with that you would just absolutely love to get the chance to?“I’ve opened for the Stones a couple of times and gotten to sit in with them and Keith Richards and I have known him and Mick since I was 19, so that’s one person I would love to get back into the studio and do something together with. I’m sure that opportunity, hopefully, will pan out in the next few years, but just about everybody else I love. I’ve been blessed to already get Tony Bennett and my dad and great R&B artists, people like BB King and Ruth Brown and Charles Brown and Crosby, Stills & Nash. There’s really been so many people and now I have a duet out with David Lind-ley on the Jackson Browne tribute record, so I’m not gonna lie one at a time there’s less and less available, but then there’s the whole younger generation.” Have you found when you per-form a younger generation is finding your music?“Yeah, it’s really been wonderful to see, es-pecially at the after show kind of fundraiser receptions, and sometimes people win con-tests at radio stations. But even just looking out, especially in the summertime we play outdoors a lot, you can see the genera-tion that were children when ‘Nick of Time’ (came out). After 20 years in the business, ‘Nick of Time’ kind of catapulted me into a different stratosphere of people knowing about me, and those kids are now in their early 20s that grew up with their parents playing ‘Luck of the Draw’ and ‘Nick of
Time’ in their playlists. And so you’ve got people like Justin Vernon and Adele singing my praises and singing ‘I Can’t Make You Love Me’ and that whole generation that didn’t know about me.”
Now, obviously touring is a little bit different than back in ‘71. Do you still love it just as much be-ing on the road?“Oh man, if it seems like it’s a lot of fun when you go to a concert, it’s because it is. Those two hours are worth the 22 hours of schlepping around five cities a week. In the early days it wasn’t as great of food and the hotels weren’t as good and the buses weren’t as smooth, and that was just fine. When you’re young that’s when you can party and hang out on the road and sleep crammed in together in a small station wagon. But being on the road nowadays … is really like a traveling summer camp, so I love it even more now than I’ve done all of these four decades. I must really love being on the road. I think it gets in your blood to be this kind of a gypsy… It’s really fun to have that camaraderie and be on the bus and travel with a pack. But the payoff is really the shows, to be able to blow people away every night, hopefully, and do your ab-solute best and knowing that people haven’t either seen you for many years or sometimes for the first time. Every night is opening night, and I learned that from my dad.”
Is there anything you would like to say to your fans up here in Fargo or that are coming out to your show?“I don’t get up to your neck of the woods enough and we’re thrilled that you wanted to have us. This isn’t a touring year for us, so I’m glad to be able to hit a bunch of people that haven’t been able to get down to the Fair and I hope you love our show. We’re going to go back and do some stuff from the early days all through the ‘Nick of Time,’ ‘Luck of the Draw’ and some of the new stuff from the last couple of records, so I hope there’ll be a lot of things that you’ll love. And I can’t recommend that you get there early enough to see my dear friend and mentor Spider John Koerner who is just an absolute legend. I think we’re going to have a blast.”

Over the last decade, Trampled By Turtles has gained national success. This bluegrass band from Duluth, MN is releasing their seventh studio album, “Wild Animals” on July 15. They are coming to the Bluestem Amphitheater
on Friday, June 27. We chatted with the fiddler Ryan Young from Trampled By Turtles about their upcoming show.

Have your legs recovered from the Fargo Marathon yet? // Fargomonthly.com28
You guys are always up here in Fargo. What’s it like performing here?“It’s great. We’ve been there many, many, many times being from right next door. Any place that we’ve been to that many times we’re going to end up with a bunch of close friends, which is definitely the case in Fargo. There’s a bunch of people we know and love up there… Fargo is definitely one of those towns we have been there enough where we get a lot of repeat customers.” Talk a little bit about the new record coming out.“So for the first time ever we worked with a producer, which is somebody we bring into the studio that’s not part of the band and we pay him to give us his two cents and help us make the record. So we got Alan Sparhawk from Low. He is the guitar player from Low and he did a brilliant job. We were maybe a little skeptical about having a producer thing because we had always just done that ourselves. But we decided what song was good to go and what was good enough and so we were a little skeptical, but Alan was full of great ideas and we all look up to him so much and we are all just fans of his music. He’s in many bands; he’s in Low, Retribution Gospel Choir, The Black-Eyed Snakes and another one called the Murder of Crows, and we are basically just fans of him, so we took his advice seri-ously and 99 times out of 100 it was a great idea and totally worked out so I feel like he made this record our best one yet and it wouldn’t have turned out without him. It would have been a different sounding record.” This is your guys’ seventh album. Does it feel different each time or does it get monotonous at all?“Each one is different and recording is actu-ally my personal favorite part about being a musician. I love playing shows, too, but recording is the most fun for me. So I don’t get sick of it. We’ve got the full spectrum in the band, I think. I would be one of the ones that’s far to the left of the record-ing side of the spectrum and there’s other people in the band that equally are the other way. That think that playing the live shows is definitely where it’s at and there’s people in the middle. So, we’ve got the full spectrum. So I’m only speaking for myself when saying that recording is awesome. No matter how many times we do it I’ll never get sick of it.” So I have to ask: you are rocking it out when you are on the stage.
How many strings do you break on your fiddle throughout your performance?“Oh it’s not as much as some of the other instruments. I would say the bass breaks the least amount of strings; I would say maybe once every two months. I break one, maybe about that, but a little bit more often, maybe one every month. Guitars and mandolins break every single show. Some-times multiple times a show and our band record is from our mandolin player, Erik Berry. At this one show he broke 14 strings in one show. I think it’s totally ridiculous in an awesome way. Although, that was a very expensive night. Mandolin strings aren’t too much, they are expensive, but fiddle strings and bass strings are way more expensive. So it’s a bigger deal when those break as far as cost.” You guys were just on the “Squidbillies.” How did that come about?“They contacted Trampled by Turtles to do a rendition of their theme song because every show or most every show they have a different band perform their intro music. So they asked us to do one of those and we did. So if people wanted to hear that it’s on like a ‘Squidbillies’ CD. I would imagine you would be able to find it on iTunes. It’s just all these different bands playing the same song, the theme song and we’re one of them. I actually thought it was a lot of fun and it turned out really good. Surprisingly good... So we did that and then it came time for us to do a video for Walt Whitman and we were looking for something that we weren’t in, so let’s do a video that we aren’t actually in... so we said how about we ask the ‘Squidbillies’ people since we have a little bit of a relationship with them now? Let’s see if they’ll do it. And they agreed to do it and so it turned out pretty awesome.” Anything you want to say to your fans here in Fargo?“I would say get there in time to see all the music. It’s going to be incredible. All of those bands are awesome. We miss you guys and we’ll see you soon.”

Peterson has held a variety of different positions at the plant, working from the bottom up.
“I’ve been here for 18 years. I started out as an entry level operator after I got out of school,” he said. “I did that for 13 years, then I moved to operation supervisor, did that for about four years. Then I moved to this position.”
There are a total of 32 people that work in the plant.
“The plant runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Peterson said. During a tour of the plant, Peterson commented on the inner workings of the big building on 14th avenue. The plant opened in the spring of 1997 and has since kept up with the demand of Fargo and the surrounding area’s water needs. “We have the capacity here to handle 30 million gallons of water a day,” Peterson said. Fargo, on average, uses 11 million gallons of water a day in the winter months and roughly 13 million gallons in the summertime.
“I’ve seen peaks up to 23 million gallons, though,” Peterson said.
To put that into perspective, Peterson noted that a shower uses about 7-10 gallons a minute.
With the demand for water seemingly under control, why would Fargo need the new treatment plant that’s in the works since 2010?
“We looked at the facility and we looked at population growth,” Peterson said. “When they built this plant, it was projected to last until around 2020. We’re getting pretty close. Fargo has grown a lot faster than I think a lot of people expect.” The growth of Fargo isn’t the only thing that prompted the new facility plans. Water from Devils Lake is high in sulfates and it ends up in the Sheyenne River, which Peterson says is a backup source of water for Fargo.
“This plant was designed to expand, but it wasn’t designed to treat sulfates,” Peterson said. “The new plant has a different kind of treatment to remove sulfates that we can’t do here.” Peterson knows his stuff, but he’s modest.
“They give me the bills and I pay them, I guess,” he said. But it’s much more than that; Peterson knows a little bit of everything and he’s happy to call the plant home.

STEP ONE: PRETREATMENTWater from both the Red and the Sheyenne rivers is pumped into the facility. “Here is where we take the big stuff out of the water, the clay and stuff like that,” Peterson said.
Step Two: SofteningThere are a total of six tanks that soften the water. “Basically, what it does is removes hardness so that your soap works better,” Peterson said.
Step Three: Ozone DisinfectionWater is disinfected by an ozone process and not by chlorine. Ozone helps to reduce tastes and odors in the water.
Step Four: FiltersWater then travels through 12 inches of gravel, 10 inches of sand and 20 inches of coal before being pumped out to the reservoir on 13th Avenue and Fargo’s 11 water towers.

It has been said that the person in charge of combining peanut butter and jelly was a soldier during World War II. According to you readers,
whoever combined a strawberry glaze and ham-burger for the Fargo Billiards and Gastropub’s Sweet Strawberry Bacon Burger should be right next to that soldier in the Tastiness Hall of Fame. Combining fruit with beef may be unorthodox, but it has been done before. Pineapple and beef has worked in the past, so the people at Fargo Bil-liards and Gastropub decided to go a step further and replace the pineapple with strawberry slices and add a tangy strawberry glaze that will induce hunger at any moment. Alyssa is now the chef in charge and made the glaze even sweeter. The unexpectedly delicious combination has made this burger one of the most unique in town.

The Prairie Stone Center will be home to 20 new restaurants, service businesses and retail services.
The announcement of Chipotle coming to Fargo and calling the Prairie
Stone Center home created a buzz Goldmark Schlossman Realtor Jim Buus was looking for. “Our goal was to bring in new names, new brand names that aren’t on the market yet,” Buus said. He has already turned down other popular restaurants for fresher names.

Buus said the location is a bulls-eye when it comes to reining in customers. “This is a stand-alone neighborhood and the customers that are more likely to come to this center are the regional type travelers,” Buus said. Along with shoppers traveling between West Acres and Scheels, Buus hopes the new Center will draw in as many mid-to-high end women retail shoppers as possible. “We want this center to be known as the place with all the cool new stuff, and I would say we are knocking it out the park right now.”
Buus wasn’t definitive when giving a date for the opening of the Prairie Stone Center, but if you have been traveling on 45th street recently, you know it’s only weeks away.

The PresidentAnne Blackhurst recently ran the Fargo Marathon. In fact, she didn’t just run
the Fargo Marathon; she offered to pay for any Minnesota State University Moorhead students’ entrance fee for running the marathon in Dragon apparel. That about sums up the newly elected MSUM president – a small, ambitious
woman who’s ready to lead MSUM to a brighter future.
Things haven’t been easy for MSUM over the last couple of years. They’ve faced budget shortages and have had to cut staff because of lower enrollments.
The previous president, Edna Szymanski, faced these issues and hopefully resolved them. Now with the difficult past behind the school, Blackhurst is excited about the future. “I admire President Szymanski tremendously for having the courage to make the difficult decisions,” Blackhurst said. “She has really done the hard work … to make sure that we are financially sustainable for at least the foreseeable future. I have the tremendous benefit of coming in as president with that hard work behind us and an opportunity to focus everyone forward on the future.” While MSUM may be financially safe for now, there are issues to overcome, goals to meet and, ultimately, thousands of students’ professional futures depending on the education
they receive at the university. Blackhurst might just be the right person to accomplish those tasks. She has been involved with universities most of her life. “I’ve always been intensely interested in why people behave the way they do,” Blackhurst said. “Pretty early on I decided to pursue my master’s degree in counseling. Some of my earliest experiences as a counselor were with college students… The thing that gives meaning to my work is using the understanding of why people behave the way they do to help college students reach their potential.” She received a doctorate in college student personnel from Ohio University before jumping between universities, eventually settling at MSUM in 2011 where she served as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. In this role she acted as Szymanski’s right hand woman.

“She (Szymanski) and I have really been partners, and I feel like I know what I need to know about the university and where we are,” Blackhurst said. There is a general feeling of excitement throughout the whole campus over Blackhurst’s appointment. “I think that people are ready for a positive change,” MSUM student Scott Eickschen said. “It’s been a tough past couple of years with budgeting issues and having to see a lot of professors be let go. I think overall it’s going to have a really positive benefit.” That excitement will only take the university so far, though. The school has many goals it hopes to reach. According to Blackhurst, one of the main goals is to partner with business leaders in the region to ensure that students can continue to get a job after graduation. (Currently 97 percent of students are employed in their field after graduation.) The university is primarily focusing on five different sectors to ensure job placement: healthcare, finance, technology, manufacturing and STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics).
“We listen very carefully to what (different businesses) think we’re doing very well for preparing our graduates, but then what they wish we were doing better,” Blackhurst said. These sector breakfasts, as they’re called, are put on by MSUM in collaboration with the Greater Fargo-Moorhead Economic Development Corporation and many business leaders are welcome to attend these meetings. Because of these breakfasts, they have developed several different changes in curriculum including creating a Master of Science in Accounting and Finance degree, developing a new minor and certificate called “Doing business in China” and much more. Blackhurst wants to see some more changes than just in the classroom. She believes that the university’s culture needs to be strengthened and improved upon. “(We need to have) the type of campus culture where our students feel pride in the institution, feel pride for what they’re doing here,” Blackhurst said. “Where we’re all strongly focused on excellence and performing as well as we can. If those changes occur in our campus culture, I also see that our enrollment will improve.” Her ideas aren’t revolutionary. They’re not even that surprising. But as the university is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year, maybe what the school needs is somebody with the energy to lead. After all, leading a university isn’t a sprint. It’s a marathon.

new tricks Nelson has learned, one trend has remained the same: people love their beer.
Nelson has spent almost 15 years at 1515 42nd St. S in Fargo, meaning she has experienced the location’s major transition from Big D’s to Shotgun Sally’s. “(Shotgun Sally’s) isn’t like any other place in Fargo... just the aesthetic of it.”
Before becoming a bartender, Nikki Nelson did security work within the bar. “I used to love kicking out girls,” she says. She was intimidated by the idea of bartending; she thought she would never be able to make drinks right and customers would never walk away happy.

If you’ve been reading my column the last several months, then you know by now that I’m not a poetic person. For that matter, I’m really not even a writer at
all. I just happen to be lucky enough to be given a platform to discuss food and cooking on my terms.
This month, I was asked to discuss burgers. Considering the time of year and the fact that so many establishments in our community are battling for best burger, that makes sense. I suppose the burger really is the perfect topic considering my style of cooking. I spend a lot of time pushing the idea of simplicity and basic integrity of product being the winning components of it all.
I think chefs and home cooks are finally starting to get it when it comes to a great burger. The days of huge artisan buns, outrageous toppings and “secret” seasoning blends are hopefully behind us. I think we’re finally ushering in the idea that if the meat itself is quality and not overcooked, then we can produce a great burger with very little effort and few ingredients. So rather than me rambling on in regards to proper cooking and assembling of a burger, I’ll simply list a few tips and suggestions. I know that grilling is something that many people take very seriously. Therefore, I’m certain that some will disagree with me on certain issues. Just remember, you don’t have to agree with me. You just need to show up and out-cook me at the Fargo Monthly “Burger Throw Down.” May the best cook win.

1. Use quality meat. A fresh ground mixture of chuck and sirloin is ideal. The addition of short rib or brisket is nice but not absolutely necessary. Fattier cuts have far more flavor, so don’t use lean meat. Fresh ground also allows you to cook the burger to your desired doneness with fewer concerns of food borne illness.
2. Choose an appropriately-sized bun. Soft and petite is ideal – and make sure the bun is toasted before assembling the final product.
3. Form the patty to be just slightly larger in circumference than the bun. Make sure you dimple the center of the patty to ensure the shape stays consistent through the cooking process.
4. Season with quality salt and fresh ground black pepper. If you’re using additional seasonings, keep them subtle. It doesn’t make sense to mask the flavor of quality meat with spices.
5. Use quality toppings. Vine ripe tomato, sweet onions (raw, roasted or grilled), Bibb lettuce, sprouts, fresh shredded or sliced cheeses, and good quality ketchup and Dijon mustard. Keep the toppings few and simple. Just like making quality pizza, less toppings is always more!
6. Use a hot cooking surface. The caramelization process is very important for the development of flavor.
7. Don’t overcook the patty! Just like a steak, medium rare is ideal, and cooking it past medium might get you kicked out of the party! Just say no to well done.
8. Never press the burger. Seriously, don’t do it. Be patient.
Feel free to turn or flip the burger as many times as you want. The old school idea that you only flip the burger once has been scientifically disproven. In fact, flipping the burger more frequently can actually help the burger cook quicker and more uniformly. The same goes for steaks.

The band’s complex mix of genres is made possible by one stellar combination: sheet music and improvisation.
Many bands avoid sheet music all together and simply jam until it comes out sounding good. But guitarist and bassist Ben Ranson, a composer who went to the Berkeley School of Music in Boston, knows the importance of having it in writing.
“Unless you can write it down, it’s very, very difficult to teach to a band,” Ranson said. “So in a sense, although it’s not that easy to read music, reading music is actually the easiest way to learn complicated material.”
Pianist Nora Hyde is a staple in the local music scene. She brings years of experience to the table and an eye for reading music.
“Nora is an astounding reader,” Ranson said of Hyde’s ability. “In fact in my entire life, I have only known a couple other people who can even approach her ability in terms of just being able to look at a piece of music and being able to read through it.”
Drummer Jered Johnson’s unique dynamics and vocalist Alison Olson round out this perfect quartet. The band has recorded a demo and is preparing to gig. A lot.

WHAT STARTED OUT AS A TEENAGE HOBBY catapulted into a full-fledged dream. Triz has been making waves in the area by releasing tracks and opening for Aaron Carter, Bone Thugs N Harmony and Three Six Mafia.
When he opened for Bone Thugs N Harmony in February, there was no shortage of nerves. But he held his own in front of the sold out venue.
“That was by far the best show I’ve done,” Triz said. “I’ve never performed in front of a sold out crowd before. I can’t even explain the feeling.”
This small town musician knows Fargo isn’t the most ideal place for a rap career. But he’s confident that he’s on the right track. As a business management, marketing and sales major at Minnesota State Community and Technical College, he’s got a good handle on what he needs to do.
“I really have found that marketing is kind of my niche,” Triz said. “It kind of goes along with music, too. I have to market myself, promote myself, so that’s kind of how I look at it.”
With the Minneapolis underground scene right next door, he and his manager have begun talks about getting his name out down there. He has also considered making the move to the Cities, but for now, school is his priority.
Besides finishing up his degree, he’s set to release his first full-length mix tape this summer. After that, it’s likely you’ll be hearing a lot more from Triz.
THE 1980S CALLED, and they want Jedwin back – but that’s too bad, because we’re keeping him.
Always decked in white shoes, white pants, a blazer and bright orange Ray-Bans, this up-and-coming musician just released his first EP, “Midnite ‘til Morning.” Following a storyline about a night on the town, Jedwin wraps his love for music and downtowns into one spunky 17-minute CD.
The Vallard, MN native boasts a serious repertoire of instruments: drums, guitar, synthesizer, piano, bass and vocals. In fact, he played all of them for “Midnite ‘til Morning.”
“This whole entire EP was basically a dream I’ve had ever since I was little to record an album where I play everything,” he said. “So last year in January I kind of had this premonition on, well I have this dream, but why am I not pursuing that?”
Ten months, four studios and three states later, Jedwin’s first EP was born. His fascination with 80s music, culture and fashion is evident in each track, and so is his passion.
“I view music as more than just the tunes and the things that you hear in your ear,” he said. “It’s the whole realm of art. It’s fashion, it’s graphic design, it’s photography, it’s videography, it’s music.”

4SILKA TOBIAS IS GOING TO MISS THE FARGO MUSIC SCENE, especially her weekly jam sessions in Island Park. But don’t worry, this spunky musician will be back – after spending her summer on an Alaskan cruise ship.
She’s got big plans for her return. Along with investing more time and money into her music with voice lessons and more instruments, she’s got her sights set on starting a band.
Tobias has a knack for picking up any instrument and playing it like she was born with it in her hand. From the guitar to the ukulele to hand drums, she simply knows how to make music.
“(Music is) my state of being,” she said. “But mostly it’s like looking through a photo album like, ‘Oh yeah, I used to be
there.’ You can just hear it; it’s a different voice, it’s different lyrics and it’s like I was a completely different person, so it’s almost kind of like a timeline.”
Her timeline has taken place all over the world. Born in the Philippines, Tobias has lived in places like San Diego, Los Angeles and Portland. But she’s found a unique humility in the Fargo music scene.
“The scene here is always competitive, but most of the time I find people that are just super open and humble about playing music with people,” she said, “which helps, especially when you’re trying to learn.”
Keep an eye out for her once she returns from her latest adventure.

First, do a little research. If someone offers you a gig, ask what other bands have played at this bar, club or for this promoter. See what they have to say about playing at a particular establishment or for a particular promoter. Not only will this help in deciding whether or not who you’re about to play for is trustworthy, but it will also give you a feel for what kind of venue it is or what kind of crowd to expect. Doing your research in order to not get shafted on pay may also help you play a better show. I know when you are starting out as a musician and just getting your foot in the door in a local music scene you’ll take what you can get. I’m suggesting that you do a little research to avoid a massive headache later. Second, I have three words for you: contracts, contracts, contracts. A contract does not have to be anything ridiculously elaborate. Basically, your band’s name, the name of the venue, the date, the time, how much you’re getting paid, the name of the promoter or person responsible for paying you, their signature and yours will suffice. If they decide they are not going to pay you at the end of the night, they won’t have a leg to stand on in any court, whether it is civil or small claims if there is a printed
document signed by both parties. The funny thing is that the simple act of a promoter or talent buyer signing it pretty much shows you that they are trust worthy. I’m definitely not saying it’s a guarantee, as I’ve had contracts signed and not honored before, but I would say it’s a pretty good indicator that you might not have much to worry about. If they refuse to sign it, it’s a huge red flag. Find another place to play. Representation is always a great way to avoid this situation. I know that not every band is at the point in their career to be represented by an agent, but if you have the opportunity to let someone else worry about money, take it. Be careful, though; an agent can be just as shady as a promoter. Now, I will go into my personal belief on how to avoid this situation but I’m going to need everyone’s help on this one. I firmly believe that every performing musician should be paid in full prior to performance. Obviously, if there is a back end deal worked in as part of the pay, that will have to wait until after the performance, but all guarantees

should be paid prior to the artist walking on stage. My reasoning behind this is that as a performing artist, it is impossible to take back your service. I feel that we all as musicians should start demanding this until it eventually just becomes the industry standard. I hope that I don’t sound greedy because that is not my intention. I’m just suggesting that industry standards should change in order to make sure everyone is treated fairly and to avoid unnecessary conflict between artists and promoters or talent buyers. We as musicians don’t do what we do for the money; we do it because we love it. But we shouldn’t ignore the fact that what we do deserves reimbursement and to quote my good friend Sean Anonymous, “Nothing hurts your worth like free work.”
I recently had a conversation with a friend who now has a son who is currently playing in a band. He’s just started playing gigs and has already ran into one of the worst things that can happen to a struggling musician: he and his bandmates got stiffed on pay after a gig. I feel that most people don’t quite realize how horrible this is. Imagine going to work all week, going to pick up your paycheck and it’s not there because your boss decided that he or she was just not going to pay you, even though you worked all week. Doesn’t seem right, does it? You very seldom hear about situations like that, but in the music industry it happens all the time. I have definitely had it happen to me before, and I’m going to go through a few tips to either avoid this situation or easily settle it if it arises.
