Newsletter Date: 14 July 2017 Volume 13 Issue 36
For the staff, the saddest part of the end of the academic year is in the inevitable farewells to colleagues who are moving to pastures new. We wish them every success in whatever they do, and hope that they all keep in touch with Saints Peter and Paul, just as we will never forget their contributions to the life and success of our College. Geography Field Trip
Over the last few weeks the Year 9 & 10 Geography cohort has spent valuable time in the beautiful county of Cumbria collecting primary data in Glenderaterra Beck in the Blencathra area. The students are currently studying River Landscapes as part of their Physical Geography and their time in the field was spent assessing how the theory learnt in class actually works in practice. The students used a variety of methods to measure the width and depth of the channel; the velocity of the water and shape and size of the particle size. The weather was a mixed bag with the Year 9 students enjoying fine and dry conditions, allowing us to take in the inspiring views of the mountainous landscape whilst the poor Year 10 groups had to endure torrential rain and strong northerly winds-the great British weather!!! The students are now analysing and presenting their data in preparation for the skills section of the exam paper. Thanks to all the students for their excellent spirit and hard work despite the weather. Carolyn Robertson - Director of Ebacc

Archdiocese Public Speaking Competition
Our College took a team to the Archdiocese Public Speaking Competition on Friday 7 July hosted by Archbishop Beck Catholic Sports College. Each contestant had to deliver a speech, of three minutes in length, on topics ranging from what worries them most in the future, to advice they would have given to Little Red Riding Hood, to a panel of judges and an audience of staff and students. Owen Teeling in Year 7 gave a thoughtful speech, impeccably delivered, on the subject of ‘If I was an animal what would I be?’ He was followed by Alex Littlejohn in Year 8 who spoke with great conviction about her biggest concern for the future which was a well-argued piece about the education system. There were 17 speakers from across the Archdiocese schools, and the competition was fierce, with a host of extremely eloquent and well-delivered speeches…so it made Alex Littlejohn’s victory even more fantastic! Owen put in an excellent performance but it was Alex Littlejohn who was crowned champion, meaning that Saints Peter and Paul are the Liverpool Archdiocese Public Speaking Champions of 2017. Thanks also go to Hannah Moriarty in Year 7 who has also attended Speech Club all year, working on her own speech, and who travelled with the team to lend support to her Speech Club friends. http://www.runcornandwidnesworld.co.uk/news/15409768.Schoolgirl_wins_public_speaking_competition/

Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA) On Saturday 10 of our music students from year 7 up to year 10 attended a workshop day at LIPA. The day consisted of a tour of the facilities, a talk from current and past students, a song writing workshop and a percussion workshop. During the tour we got to see some of the studio space the university has to offer, visit the library, and go inside the auditorium. On the tour students noticed a number of gold plaques on steps and above doorways including names such as Eddie Murphy, Paul McCartney and Apple. When the students asked about this we were told the plaques were to show patrons of the university, there were some very impressive names there! During the song writing workshop students go the opportunity to work on their own instrument but as part of a large team. They chose chord sequences and then were tasked with composing lyrics, hooks, bass lines and drum rhythm patterns to accompany this, with the help of the workshop leaders the students produced a fantastic song. After lunch, and much discussion about what we had seen and heard during the morning, we took part in a percussion workshop. This was the opportunity for many students to show off their drum skills and knowledge of samba and the opportunity for some of the students to try something new. You can see clips of our work from the day on twitter @StsPnP_ExArt

College Prayer
Our last full week of College and the end of another busy and successful year, and what a lot we have to be
thankful for: new experiences, exciting opportunities, new relationships, developing skills, opening minds…life in all
its fullness. As with any year it will have had its ups and downs, and as tough as those down times are they too will
have taught us valuable lessons for our life journey. We also acknowledge and give thanks to all those who will
leave this community at the end of the year, both staff and students; we are so thankful for all they have given to us
and for all they now have to opportunity to share with others;
God our Father,
We take this time to say thank you for all those in our community who will leave this College at the end of the week:
friends we have loved, staff who have worked hard on our behalf, people who have supported and guided us.
We are grateful for all they have added to our lives
and we pray that even though they leave us they know they will always
be a part of the family of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic College.
Bless them as they prepare to embark upon a new chapter in their lives
and grant them courage when September comes. Amen.
College closes on
Wednesday 19 July at 12 noon and
re-opens on Wednesday 6 September
