St. Peter Catholic School - Curriculum

Vision and Purpose:

The goal of the curriculum at St. Peter Catholic School is to

form students intellectually within the context of Catholic

education. In order to achieve this goal, we are preparing our

students to be insightful thinkers and speakers who have a

solid basis in their religion and a solid mastery of language

arts, mathematics, science, social studies, technology, art,

music, and physical education.

Religious education is at the heart of the entire

curriculum at St. Peter School. St. Peter defines its own specific

curriculum, modeling state and national curriculum

standards, as well as the religious standards suggested by the

National Catholic Education Association. Our graduates are

prepared to excel academically, to welcome leadership

responsibilities, and to become productive members of society.

Mathematics Curriculum Vision

The purpose and goal of the mathematics curriculum at St. Peter

School is to prepare our students to have a comprehensive understanding

and application of arithmetic and mathematic principles. In the early

school years students develop a mastery of arithmetic principles and

application. The mastery of arithmetic set a solid foundation for the

understanding of mathematics. Early algebraic and geometric concepts

are taught at these grade levels as well.

In the middle years students are taught multiple step mathematical

problems and applications. This includes variables, fractions and more

advanced geometry.

During Middle School students have the opportunity to learn at

grade level or be challenged at a higher level including a complete course

in Algebra. Many of our students are placed in advanced Math courses

once they enter high school. All of our graduates are well prepared to

succeed in Mathematics.

Science Curriculum Vision

The purpose and goal of the Science Curriculum at St. Peter Catholic

School is to form in our students with a sound scientific foundation that

strengthens many skills people use every day like solving problems

creatively, thinking critically, working cooperatively in teams, using

technology effectively and valuing life-long learning.

We believe all students are capable of full participation and of

making meaningful contributions in science class. In our K-2 programs

we will guide students to an understanding of the fundamentals of science.

The 3rd thru 5th grade students will deepen their knowledge of scientific

concepts and participate in scientific investigations. These students will

also study the solar system and continue their study of general Earth, Life

and Physical science.

Our sixth through eighth grade middle school students pursue an in-

depth study of Earth, Life and Physical Science. This curriculum is

designed to fully prepare to excel in high school science courses. The

middle school students regularly apply the Scientific Method in lab work,

data collection and analysis. The curriculum also continues to develop the

student’s ability to ask insightful questions and define problems that will

lead to possible solutions.

With the diversity of students’ skills, experiences, and backgrounds, our

school believes in varied, high quality opportunities for all students to

learn science.

Social Studies Curriculum Vision

The Social Studies program at St. Peter School is designed to have

students become productive and responsible members of a democratic

society. By definition, Social Studies encompass the disciplines of

history, economics, political science, geography, religious studies,

psychology, anthropology, and civics.

Students in grades K-5 focus on family and community. Middle

School students broaden their knowledge by comparing the

governments of ancient civilizations with modern governments. By

understanding the past, students can draw conclusions about the causes

and effects in their history. The goal of the program is to develop

students’ thinking and communication skills so that they can become

informed decision makers in an ever-changing world.

Religion Curriculum Vision:

The purpose and goal of the Religion curriculum at St. Peter Catholic

School is to enable our students to develop a personal and active

relationship with Jesus Christ, by living the teachings of the Catholic

Church. The four pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church-Creed,

Sacraments, Morality, and Prayer-are taught and developed on every

grade level every year. This ensures that the beliefs of our faith are

introduced to and reinforced for the young people as they grow, develop,

and mature in their faith. In addition, our Faith in Action program is

designed to educate students on catholic social teachings and to help them

respond in action to the most vulnerable in our community.

In the Primary grades, students continue to recognize in themselves

and others that they are uniquely created, each a beautiful child of God.

Students develop a sense of belonging to family, home, school, parish,

church and community. Students cultivate a love for Jesus Christ and His

Church and in doing so learn to embrace a loving God. All of this is done in

our Christ centered classroom environment with the strong support of

very active parents.

St. Peter Catholic School Curriculum – updated October 2015 [Type text]

A

The Intermediate students build on Catholic literacy by defining and

explaining important faith terms and concepts. Students learn to

recognize that faith is not detached from their everyday life, but is meant

to be lived. They also use examples of saints and others who have lived

exemplary Catholic lives to serve as models for all young people.

The Middle School student will learn what it means to follow Jesus

and to be Catholic today. They will learn what God has revealed to us

through his Son, Jesus Christ, and what the Church has passed on from

generation to generation through the working of the Holy Spirit. Their

spiritual journey will guide them in learning about the Catholic Church, its

beliefs and about God theFather, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, the

sacraments, Christian morality, justice and prayer. Their study will

culminate with the sacrament of Confirmation, which brings them to be,

full member of the Church.
