Cloud-computing and the Internet of Things (IoT) is frequently being referred to as the next industrial revolution. Connected devices are constantly becoming smarter, and are growing in number - fast. As these devices are interlinked through ever speedier connections, the technological possibilities seem endless.

People are also connected, and use computers, smartphones and online services to assist them in all aspects of life. In fact, consumers expect almost any service to be easily available on a pocket-sized touch-screen. No wonder mobile ticketing is set to boom, with the driving industries being stadium events, the airline industry, and public transport.

The trends are global, but the Nordic countries have in particular been early adapters of new technology. This has been a key to FARA’s innovative product strategy and development program.

Traditional providers of Automatic Fare Collection and Real-Time Information systems are experiencing increasing competition over transaction management, being challenged on future solutions by consultant houses and lean app-developers.

Banks, telecom, payment networks and technology companies are introducing a multitude of new solutions for mobile and contactless payment. Many of the solutions are results of strategic and technological collaborations across different industries; however, few solutions are fully tailored to the PTA/PTO side of the business.

SMART - SMART MOBILE APPLICATIONS FOR REAL-TIME AND TICKETING

We call it SMART – “SMART Mobile Applications for Real-Time and Ticketing”.

FARA’s customers are focused on delivering an optimal transport service to their passengers. We handle the technical operation of these ITS systems, with the goal of constantly simplifying and enhancing the experience for both operator and traveler.

The vision for our product strategy has been to move the services into the cloud and make our applications portable and mobile.

The FARA SMART concept consists of four elements: one solution for each user - the driver, the passenger and the operator – plus a cloud of services that neatly brings it all together.

SMART:myDrive

SMART:myDrive is the onboard Android-based solution for drivers. It includes real-time information, functionality for ticketing sales and validation, as well as schedule performance and communication with traffic coordinators and other drivers.

SMART:myTravel

SMART:myTravel is the passenger’s best friend. It provides functionality for ticket purchases and real-time journey planning on native mobile apps and applications.

SMART:myOperation

SMART:myOperation is the indispensable tool for operators, managers and administrators. It provides fleet management functionality, communication channels towards passengers and drivers, as well as extensive reporting and statistics tools.

SMART:myCloud brings all the services together and provides the operator with powerful sales tools, real-time prognosis, data collection and reporting.

OVERVIEW

SMART:myTravel is the passenger’s “travel wizard.” It combines journey planning, ticket purchase as well as real-time journey and connection updates – into one application. It is accessible both as web pages and dedicated super-fast app for both Android and iOS.

SMART:myTravel also provides real-time updates for bus stops, terminals and passenger hotspots, showing live information on next departures and approaching buses on maps. The application comes in a special version adapted to dedicated outdoor or indoor displays, as well as web-based portals suitable for any monitor (e.g. lobby).

SMART:myTravel is integrated with the other SMART products and is not locked into a specific geographical area. The app is free for the user and is available for both iOS and Android, and as web applications.

WEB APPLICATION WITH RESPONSIVE DESIGN

REAL-TIME JOURNEY PLANNING ON NATIVE MOBILE APPS

Easy planning of A-to-B journeys, map functionality and schedule date per line or station.

The Journey planner app is easy to use and automatically adapts to the passenger’s behavior by saving demographics, frequently used stops, etc.

Real-time information lets the passenger monitor the journey, and ensures that journeys are suggested based on actual live data when this differs from the planned schedule.

FARA Mobile Ticket is a smartphone app for buying transportation tickets.

All ticketing logic, administration and reporting is provided by the Sales Service in SMART:myCloud. The products, geographic and pricing data in the app are updated in real-time.

The product and geographic data is imported into FARA Sales Service via XML files, or via a ticketing back-end system such as FARA Ticketing system.

Opening screen: Instant access to favorite-tickets based on previous purchases. Alternatively, choose ticket by specifying «to-from».

Specifying «to-from» is easy and quick thanks to the predictive auto-fill function.

Confirm travelers and pay: If needed, edit number of travelers before clicking «To Payment»

Confirm payment: Hit «Confirm»! Default payments mean and e-mail for receipt is automatically applied, but could also be selected manually.

Receive ticket: Ticket is received, including QR-code with all ticket information. The daily animation makes it easy to detect screen-dumps even with only visual validation.

There are many players that work together to ensure effective and well-managed public transport. This includes everything from the transit companies developing timetables, following up on delays, managing accounts and continually improving operations, to the operator’s management of fleet and personnel so that they are at the right place at the right time.

FARA has gathered critical business management tools in SMART:myOperation. This gives planners, traffic managers, inspectors, management, and those responsible for customer information the real-time information and reports that they need.

SMART:myOperation ensures optimal traffic flow. Both transit companies and public/private transport operators get relevant and updated information, so that reports and accounts are correct

TICKETING OPERATION

SMART:myOperation is the operation center for monitoring and managing ticket sales. From here, the operator can plan ticket prices and campaigns, and monitor revenue from all sales channels. SMART:myOperation also includes access for customer support personnel.

The PoS application enables sales offices, kiosks or other retailers to sell travel products. The application runs on Android tablets with NFC, and is integrated with FARA Sales Service, which handles all business logic, price calculation and delivery of the ticket. The application supports sale of tickets on paper (with QR if requested) and contactless cards.

The web-based ticket sales application allows for better control and reduced user errors compared to that of solutions running on local hardware.

NAUTIZ X4 HANDHELD

SMART:myOperation also provides sales & inspection tools used by free-moving sales personnel and ticket inspectors. The applications run on light-weight devices to ensure full mobility, while still maintaining control of the sales and inspection process. These devices can also be used to provide ticket sales and validation in vehicles where no dedicated hardware is installed.

Contactless tickets are validated automatically, and mobile QR-tickets can be scanned by a machine or visually validated by the driver. The ticket contains all relevant information such as ticket type, travel route, number and category of travelers, validity duration, price, and unique order reference. Mobile tickets also include a daily generated animation and a colored validity status bar.

FARA is now offering its inspection and sales ticketing application on a new device. The Handheld’s Nautiz X4 offers a complete set of productivity-enhancing capabilities, ensuring sale and inspection of travel tickets in all conditions.

Traffic managers use SMART:myOperation to monitor their operations from a bird’s- eye view, including traffic light priority and overall status of the fleet (all blocks, journeys, vehicles, presentation units etc.).

Whenever needed, they can also exchange messages with the individual drivers and publish service alerts or other information messages to passengers.

SMART:myDrive is the solution for drivers, providing the driver with all relevant information on schedule performance, ticket sales and validation. SMART:myDrive also contains functionality for voice and text communication with the traffic controllers.

SMART:myDrive runs on Android tablets and phones designed for professional use in challenging environments. It requires no cables (except power) and connects to devices wirelessly. It controls passenger information for internal and external displays and voice announcements, and sends real-time information back to the cloud.

SMART:myCloud is a collection of services that provide functionality both for Real-Time Information and Ticketing. The services run on scalable virtual servers which allow for fast and cost-efficient roll-out. The cloud contains applications that support all the distributed functionality such as sales, validation, inspection, and real-time travel information.

FARA Sales Service is a cloud-based, stand-alone sales solution that provides ticketing-logic to sales channels. It can be used by the FARA Ticketing App for smartphones, ticket vending machines, point of sales, or any other channel that is online and able to communicate via the Sales Service API.

FARA Sales Service updates product parameters for all sales channels, adjusting price formulas and other factors. The sales service allows distribution of tickets on various media (paper, QR-code and customer cards), and offers a large range of payment options (credit/debit card, phone bill, prepaid-account and invoice).

FARA Sales Service is suitable for a variety of users: public transport authorities, public transport operators, private companies and schools.

Private companies and schools

The solution offered to private companies is based on a Charge-To-Account (CTA) system, with self-service administration of tickets for company employees. It can be based on either joint invoicing directly to the company or a prepaid account with automatic refill-reminders by email.

The school card administration answers the needs of schools. It includes issuing and blocking of cards. The travel ticket can also be issued on phones.

SMART:myCloud

The inspection service uses an online service to control travel contracts and validity against the data stored centrally in the cloud. The inspection service also provides real-time inspection data to the SMART:myOperation – reporting and business intelligence.

Traditional validation of travel products is performed on validators installed in the vehicles or on platforms. The validator acts as a slave, and is connected to a ticket node which handles all the business-logic. This arrangement has resulted in a high-speed validation process, but with some functional limitations.

By adding the Validation Service to the Cloud we enable more variations in HW setups and configurations. In combination with ID-based validation, where the travel product is no longer stored on the card, the functional expansions are limitless and also open up for cost reductions on hardware.

The validation speed still has to be fast and precise, without frequent lag-time from the online validation service – we have different ways of achieving this, depending on system requirements. Whitelisting each travel contract in all clients, or securing final payment with credit card or deposits, are some ways to keep the validation speed high even when using an online service.
