Who are we? Why was Sariling Gawa started in Hawaii? How has Sariling Gawa developed and grown since 1980?What do we do currently?

Maintenance: sustaining the organization and its work

The growing coconut sprout represents the Filipino youth being nurtured by the older, more established Filipino community in Hawaii as symbolized by the mature coconut. The coconut plant is adaptable to any tropical setting throughout the world as theFilipinos have adapted to Hawaii. The three leaves of the coconut palm symbolize the three waves of Filipino migration to Hawaii. Each leaf denotes 25 years, thereforerepresenting 75 years of Filipino experiences in Hawaii as a celebration in 1981. The fourth developing sprout represents the next 25 years. When a coconut washes ashore and gives birth to a sprout, it develops deep where it settles. The roots of the coconut are strong enough to withstand hurricanes and high waves in much the same way the Filipinos have established strong roots in Hawaii and have experienced strong struggles against discrimination in employment, education, housing, and government.

The historical forces that propelled the Filipino community to address Filipino youth and community issues

Historically, Filipinos in Hawaii were originally recruited in large numbers to work in the sugar and pineapple plantations starting in 1906s. The plantation owners recruited mostly men from the rural areas of the Philippines, because of their physical strength and endurance under extremely demanding and hot tropical working conditions. These original sakadas were the rootscontributing and building the state of Hawaiis wealth and todays Filipino community. Over the decades, these sakadas were able to bring family members to Hawaii. The 1964 Immigration Act and families brought their immediate relatives to Hawaii, increasing the population of Filipinos in Hawaii to 12% of the total population. As of the 2010 U.S. Census, Filipinos are the second largest racial/ethnic group in the state. Despite the steady population growth of Filipinos in Hawaii, educational attainment has remained modest, with 7.9% attendance at University of Hawaii Manoa, an increase from 2.9% in 1979. Filipinos in Hawaii work primarily in the service and labor sectors, with smaller percentage in management and professional positions.

Stages of Development

The original focus on Filipino youth began with the 75th Anniversary of Filipinos in Hawaii, during a time when tensions between Hawaii-born and Philippine-born immigrant youth grew into violent confrontations. Community and university leaders in the public and private sectors of the Filipino community came together with address the issues facing Filipino youthin education and employment. Annually since 1980, SG provides a Hawaii state-wide Filipino Youth Leadership Conference, in partnership with numerous schools, universities and community organizations, including the United Filipino Council of Hawaii and the YMCA.

Leadership that allows a community to draw together and take advantage of the various talents and skills that are present among its members.

Elements of Community Capacity Building

Numerous youth who participated in the Sariling Gawas leadership development program became leaders in a variety of Filipino civic and community organizations. They attributed their desire to be leaders in multiple arenas to the skills and confidence gained from Sariling Gawa. Youth leaders have engaged in school based Filipino clubs, community organizations, Hawaii statewide committees and cultural events, such as the 100th Anniversary of Filipinos committee. Moreover, youth leaders have not limited their engagement to Filipino community groups but have expanded their activities to organizations such as the Hawai'i State Nursing Association, the National Association of Social Workers, the Boy Scouts of America, the YMCA and the Hawai'i Business Jaycees.

A sense of efficacy and confidence that encourages community members to step forward and take the sorts of actions that will enhance the communitys well-being.

Elements of Community Capacity Building

An important focus of Sariling Gawa has been to encourage and support higher educational achievement of Filipino students. Filipinos educational attainment at the bachelors level is lower than the population at large, 17.8% total population versus 12.6% Filipino population (U.S. Census Bureau, 2000). As stated earlier, youth leaders trained in Sariling Gawa have become professionals, contributing to the economic strength of the Filipino community as teachers, educators and lawyers. This is a major accomplishment given the fact that initially, Filipinos were brought to Hawaii to work in the sugar cane and pineapple plantations and paid meager wages (Agbayani, 1996; Alegado, 1991; Cordova, 1983).
