A Message from the Development Director“The only constant in life is change.”

The past year has been one of considerable change for the Riverside Health Foundation. As you will see in the pages that follow, the Foundation has seen changes in staffing, structure and operations. What has not changed is the Foundation’s focus on ensuring quality, affordable health care is available in this community to all those in need.

For nearly three decades, the Riverside Health Foundation has provided philanthropic support for equipment, scholarships, continuing education, programming and more. Our focus today, just as it was upon our founding in 1987, is to enrich the healthcare experience. Our Board of Trustees is committed to ensuring the staff members of Riverside Medical Center are able to what they do best . . . provide outstanding care to our patients.

I encourage you to read through the stories in this newsletter to learn more about how your contributions are being put to work. You’ll learn more about our efforts to enhance concussion and head trauma protocols in area youth football programs, our work in support of student scholarships for the next generation of healthcare professionals, and how a few hours spent on the golf course makes an amazing difference in our ability to support healthcare efforts in the area.

You’ll also learn more about the leadership efforts of Jim Larson and how supporting our work is a direct reflection of his passions and his values. This community is fortunate to benefit from the time, talent and treasure of individuals such as Jim, Riverside Medical Center CEO Craig Kantos, Foundation Board Chairman Steve Huhta and all of the Foundation Trustees.

As health care continues to undergo dramatic changes, we promise to remain true to our commitment by helping families in the Waupaca area maintain their health, return quicklyto good health in the event of injury or illness, or to make a peaceful, dignified transition at the end of life.

Thank you for your support. Please know that your generosity never goes unnoticedor unappreciated.

Sincerely,

Serving Others

“A big proportion of the people we serve here are aging, and that means local health is becoming more important than ever,” said Jim Larson, a long-term board member at Riverside Medical Center in Waupaca. Larson is finishing up his second term on the board having served the maximum nine years for the second time, meaning Jim will have served 18 years.

With a record like that, Larson, who is a retired Waupaca Foundry executive, must feel strongly about community service. “Oh, I do. I am the one who benefits the most from volunteering. For a community our size, it’s so easy to get involved at such an interesting level. I’ve attended many medical staff meetings while on the board, and I’m amazed at what our doctors and nurses know, and what they must go through to do their jobs so professionally.”

Having specialized in human resources during his professional career, Larson sees Riverside Medical Center’s community on the water as an excellent recruiting tool. “To have the water, the woods, the schools and the community spirit are one thing. But we are inviting doctors and nurses to work in a completely modernized hospital with a great

connection to ThedaCare’s bigger system. We recruit the best people.”

Local health care requires a strong local voice in the board of directors, and Larson feels very good about his ability to represent the needs of his friends and neighbors within the larger ThedaCare organization. “That was the local community’s big fear when we affiliated in 2006, that we’d lose control of our community hospital established here in 1954.”

The local hospital board of directors consists of six local members and three from ThedaCare. “We’ve had a say in every aspect of how the hospital and clinic have been modernized. Waupaca and Riverside Medical Center are real gems. We never lose sight of the fact that we’re all in this together. We take a lot of pride in what we have here.”

Jim Larson,long-term Riverside Medical

Center board member.

Ways to Give

Financial Overview

It is the purpose and distinct privilege of the Riverside Health Foundation to help people like you – people who want to make a difference in our community’s healthcare – find worthwhile projects and programs in need of support. We bridge the gap between your good intentions and making it happen.

Make an immediate impact or provide long-term supportin a variety of ways:

Gifts of Cash. These unrestricted funds often make a difference immediately by supporting programs, education and research. One option is that cash gifts of any amount can be made in your own name, in memory or honor of a loved one, or even anonymously.

Gifts of Appreciated Assets. Non-cash assets, such as common stock, may offer additional tax advantages and also help avoid capital gains tax on the appreciated value.

Trusts & Annuities. Significant tax advantages make charitable

trusts and gift annuities an attractive option. With a trust, the donor receives a financial return on the donation throughout his/her lifetime.

Endowed Named Funds. Donors can establish an endowment fund to support a particular program or initiative. Only tapping into the interest, the principle remains intact, ensuring that important programs will be sustained for future generations.

Gifts by Will. Inserting the sentence “I bequeath $_____ or _____% of my estate to Riverside Health Foundation” allows you to support this cause so close to your heart even after you’re gone. It may cost you nothing today, but will certainly help serve our mission – and your mission – in the future. A willed gift can also help reduce the donor’s estate taxes.

Other. The Foundation staff is happy to discuss any other gift arrangements or naming opportunities, as well. Please contact the Foundation office at (715) 258-1008 for more information.

Thanks to generous individual contributions, successful fundraising events, positive ongoing relationships with our charitable sponsors, and our professionally managed investment portfolio, the overall financial picture for the Riverside Health Foundation was as follows. 2013 Report to the Community 5

Your Family’s Care Our Family’s MissionIn the summer of 2012, a representative group from ThedaCare’s seven foundations began meeting to create a future of improved collaboration, shared resources and gains in operational efficiencies. This new group, named The Radix Rugland ad hoc committee after co-chairs Harry Radix and Walter Rugland, engaged in working and planning sessions for more than a year, culminating in the creation of the ThedaCare Family of Foundations, Inc.

The sole purpose of The ThedaCare Family of Foundations and its member Foundations who have designated funds within the Family (see list to the right) is to continue to maximize the value of each gift received to improve the healthcare experience for patients and their families. While all one Family, the member foundations play a vital role in bringing gifts to life in your community. All current gift arrangements and future gifts received will be used in exactly the way expressed by the donor. The underpinning of the work of the Radix Rugland group was to ensure that all gifts given locally would stay local if desired by the donor. The Family of Foundations’ work will be governed by two representatives from each member Foundation.

Whether gifts support a local initiative or a regional program, such as hospice services, our commitment remains to extend the value of each gift to its fullest and best use. The creation of the ThedaCare Family of Foundations means that we will become more efficient with the “back of house work” and more importantly, ThedaCare will make a renewed investment in the operations of the Foundation Family so your gift is usedto its fullest to improve patient care.

We welcome the following member Foundations to the Family and we look forward to sharing more stories about our collective work throughout the year and in our inaugural version of the ThedaCare Family of Foundations, Inc. Report to the Community in 2015.

Riverside Health Foundation has awarded scholarships to Waupaca-area residents who plan to pursue careers in health care.

Thanks to the support of our generous donors, Riverside Health Foundation is able to award grants each year to purchase equipment, establish new programs or procedures, and improve the overall health of our local community...our extended family. Here is a sampling of grants awarded recently:

Concussion TestingProgram to Expand Coaches, parents and student athletes will benefit from an expansion of the concussion testing program to area school districts.

Riverside Medical Center athletic trainer Gary Premo is expanding the concussion program to allow real-time sideline assessments of an athlete’s condition with newly developed techniques.

The Riverside Health Foundation continues to invest in the Concussion Management Program as we aim to stay with cutting-edge and the latest devices. We want to add the Sway Balance application, which will give immediate feedback on an athlete’s change in stability. Another addition, the King-Devick Test, measures impaired eye movements, language, concentration, and neurological functions that are a result of a concussion. These additions integrate well with our ImPACT baseline assessments, which measures neuro-cognitive ability.

Financial support for the Concussion Program comes from the Riverside Health Foundation and the Auxiliary of Riverside Medical Center.
