products?

My magazine contains the rock genre and to show this I used images of my model in dark clothing because rock and anything in that area (eg punk, metal) are represented as quite dark and sometimes heavy. But my model was in front of a reasonably bright background (brick wall). Also the layout, using blocks and breaking it up so it wasn’t too all over the place. It was vital that I stuck to the conventions so that the audience knew what they were looking at. They could tell what they were reading, I didn’t want them to be confused. From my feedback I found that most people knew it was of the rock genre, so I was successful in producing my magazine and including conventions that would get the genre across.

The model included in my magazine has the typical costume of someone representing this genre. The costume is quite dark which can sometimes reflect the persons personality. The models appearance is quite laid back, doesn’t really care about what's going on or their surroundings. This I thought was ideal for my magazine, to show the model how other rock music magazines show their models. Again in the article, the way the model has answered the questions is quite laid back which shows that rock stars can still be down to earth people.

There are two companies that could distribute my magazine. EMAP and IPC. EMAP Limited is a British media company, specialising in the production of business-to-business magazines, and the organisation of business events and conferences. The company was once a constituent of the FTSE 100 index but is now owned by Apax and Guardian media group. EMAP magazines, has 20 magazines in its business-to-business portfolio including: Architects- journal, Architectural review, Broadcast, Construction News, Drapers, Health service journal, Local government chronicle, Nursing times, Retail week, Recycling and waste management and Screen international. IPC Media (formerly International Publishing Corporation), a wholly owned subsidiary of Time Inc., is a consumer Magazine and digital publisher in the United Kingdom, with a large portfolio selling over 350 million copies each year. IPC Magazines, publishing the consumer magazines and comics. This information was taken from - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPC_Magazines. Both companies distribute media magazines but IPC have produced more music magazines and have higher ratings than EMAP.

4.) Who would be the audience for your media product?4.) Who would be the audience for your media product?My target audience for my magazine would be a young audience that are 16-25. I think my audience would mainly be males but it could also appeal to a female audience because of the artist featured. I think that my magazine appeals more to the white race (English/American) because I think it’s a stereotype that white people listen to rock, punk etc and black people listen to RnB, Hip hop etc. It is aimed at anybody who is a fan of that genre of music. I also think that it appeals to a lower working class group because we usually see people who enjoy the rock genre working in ASDA thinking that they will eventually become a rock star themselves. Anybody could pick up a copy of my magazine and read it but I think they would appreciate it more if they were interested in the genre of music. Looking at the hierarchy of needs I think that my magazine gives esteem and love/belonging because my readers can become part of a group and create new friendships therefore giving them respect from others and others respecting them. Looking at the feedback from the questionnaire, my magazine gained a positive reaction which was what I was looking for, especially when the audience were the desired age for my magazine.

There are a lot of things that could attract my audience. The layout for example, the layout of the cover, contents and article would stand out to the audience if they are familiar with other rock magazines like ‘kerrang’. Also from the feedback I found that my contents page informs but also encourages the reader to read on. The imagery used in my magazine was the part that looked the most professional according to my feedback. But in general, I think that the actual contents of my magazine, the artist, the article and most importantly the genre of music will attract the audience.

There have been three main programs/websites I have used whilst creating my magazine. Photoshop was the program I used to produce and develop my magazine. It was a hard program to use because it could be quite complex at times but I think it helped me make my magazine the best it could be. I used Microsoft Word to create all my questionnaires and without my audience feedback I don’t think that my magazine could have been successful. The website I used to post my progress on was www.blogger.com. On this website I blogged lots of posts about my magazine, like what images I was going to use etc. I also used www.Dafont.com to get my fonts for my magazine, moodboard etc. There were other websites, such as google images, which weren’t as important but I still used them at some point in my project. Looking back at my preliminary task I think that my magazine cover for my magazine is much better. Although the layout is similar I prefer the cover because it shows off the model. Also the image is more of a medium shot and the model is using direct address like they are looking at the reader. By using Photoshop I have leant how to crop and edit pictures, add inner and outer shadow to shapes, how to adjust the opacity and much more. I have used the same font from my first piece but I think it works better in my cover as it reflects the genre of music. There is also a better colour scheme for my actual cover, it contains more colours and again reflects the genre of music.

To conclude I think that my magazine has turned out well. It could have been improved in some places like the length of the article for example but over all I am happy with the outcome and I think my magazine would do well if it was actually sold. I have learnt a lot of skills throughout my project (some have already been mentioned in the slide above) like how to create and use a blog plus a lot more. All these skills have proved useful and I hope I can use these skills in other areas. After receiving positive feedback from my questionnaire I feel that my magazine was successful. I feel that through my fronts, images, colour and layout my magazine represents the rock genre well and I think other rock music magazines should watch out!
