Foundry is a 114 year old church with a history of being "In the heart of Bend,

with a heart for Bend." As a multi-generational church, consisting of saints of all

ages, our fondest goal is to have the Holy Spirit lead us into deeper community

with each other so that we can exemplify the love of Christ to those who do not

yet know Him. Our hope is to add a Family Pastor who shares that vision and can

help us bring up our younger generation alongside us in following Christ’s plan.

Sincerely,

Foundry Church Search Committee

I. History

Established in October of 1904, we were the first church organized in Bend. Five years

ago, the name was changed from First Baptist to Foundry with the intent to remove

potential barriers between us and the community. Our commitment has always been to

preach the Word of God faithfully.

Foundry has had three different buildings. The present worship center was built in 1969.

There have been a number of remodeling projects. The most recent (2003) added a

courtyard outside and an elevator inside.

Through the years the church has mothered a number of churches, two in Bend,

Eastmont church (1980) and Antioch (2006). At least three other churches have been

formed in nearby communities. A demographic shift occurred after several young

families left to be part of the Antioch church plant.

II. Teaching Pastors through the years:

Bill Knopp (1968 – 1976)

Keith Thompson (1977 – 1987)

Al Hulbert (1987 – 1990)

Syd Brestel (1991 – 2014)

Trevor Waybright (2014 – Present)

III. Statistics

Membership and Attendance

Our Sunday morning worship attendance today is about 250 with Sunday School

attendance around 70. The median age of adults is 55.

From 4 years old to 5th grade we average 30-40 children per Sunday. Our middle school

roster runs around 20, and our high school group averages 10-15.

Budget

Foundry Church is fiscally stable with zero debt and a healthy cash reserve. This year’s

budget is $564,000 of which $77,000 is designated for missions. Non-budgeted Faith

Promise giving has supplied an additional $21,000 for missions. We have a long track

record of spending less than what was budgeted and, for the last two years, have

exceeded our projected income.

Facilities

Our facility consists of the main church building and an office building. The seating

capacity of the worship center is about 350 including the ground floor and balcony. The

building also houses thirteen classrooms, a fellowship hall, kitchen, and multiple storage

rooms. The church also has a small, undeveloped piece of land nearby that is currently

used for overflow parking.

Throughout the week, multiple community groups utilize our building rent-free.

Office Building and Staff

We have office space for five staff members. There is also one office in the church

building for the Facilities Director.

IV. Organization

Leadership

Foundry church is Elder-led. The Elder board currently consists of 7 men (2 full-time

staff, 1 volunteer staff, 4 lay elders), and while their roles and occupations are different,

all are given equal voice and authority. The staff pastors/elders have no more authority

than the others. Decisions are made from consensus with each elder humbly seeking

God’s leading and striving for unity.

Adult Sunday School classes

Youth – Sunday School classes, week night high school and junior high groups.

Monthly men’s breakfasts & annual retreat

Women’s ministry social meetings & Bible studies

Foundry Church is looking for a mature, passionate believer to oversee our ministries from

cradle to college. We view this position as much more than a typical Youth Pastor role and

desire that it focus on volunteer recruitment, training, and support. We are looking for

someone whose strength is in empowering us within the church to disciple and lead our

youngest brothers and sisters to follow Christ. We are not looking for someone to simply hand

our kids off to while we preoccupy ourselves elsewhere.

That being said, the position will certainly involve hands-on work with our Middle and High

School groups, especially at the outset. We currently have small staffs of volunteers in place

who are faithfully serving those groups, but our need for oversight, coordination, and vision is

evident. Additionally, this role will include the coordination of our elementary-age volunteers

and the regular supporting of them in their work.

We are crafting this job to be a full pastoral role, something that a man can dedicate himself to

for the long term as he invests himself fully into our church family, and giving us the

opportunity to invest into him. As such, we believe that the man who will fill this role should

match well with the following:

I. Character A. First and foremost he must be in love with Jesus Christ in an open and honest way

B. Meet qualifications for eldership as presented in 1 Tim. 3:2-7

Above reproach

Be a one woman man

Temperate

Self-controlled

Respected

Hospitable

Able to teach

Not addicted to wine/strong drink

Not violent - hot tempered

Gentle

Not quarrelsome

Not a lover of money

Manage his family well

Not a recent convert

Have a good reputation in the community and with others outside the

church

C. Be a man of integrity (1Tim. 4:12) “set an example for the believers in speech, in

life, in love, in faith, in purity”

D. Evidence personal discipline for time in the Word and prayer

E. Love the Word and obey it

F. Be transparent with the congregation regarding struggles and successes he has

experienced

II. Knowledge/Education/Experience

A. At least 3 years of experience in a pastoral role

B. Combination of relevant education and experience

C. Experience in working with youth – counseling or educational training a plus

D. Evidence of active involvement in the community outside of church activities

III. Gifts/Skills/Passions

A. Ability to work with team of elders in shared leadership

B. Desire to teach and disciple young people into mature followers of Christ

five-star restaurants, boutique shops, a vibrant music scene, and year-round festivals.

THE SPIRITUAL PULSE OF BEND

The people in any culture have certain 'idols' they tend toward in their search for

fulfillment and happiness. Some of Bend's most obvious cultural 'idols' seem to be

recreation, a love for the outdoors (worshiping the created rather than the creator),

pursuit of pleasure and comfort, the pursuit of being healthy and fit, and materialism.

Because so many people specifically move to Bend for its recreation there is a theme of

elevating this to primal importance. We also have a large flux of people moving into the

Page 14: Family Pastor Job Description - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/foundrychurch/documents/Family... · 2017-09-12 · Budget Foundry Church is fiscally stable with zero debt and

205 NW Irving Ave, Bend, OR 97703 (541) 382-3862 foundrybend.org

community for retirement which can tend toward the pursuit of pleasure and comfort.

Each and every person of course has their own vices, but these are some themes we

have picked up on while living in Bend. These are the people that we have a heart for--

that all of their hearts would be fulfilled by Jesus Christ alone.

There is a very large spectrum of the rich and poor in Bend. There are those who own

their second or third homes in Bend and live in very wealthy neighborhoods. There are

those who have found great success through business in Bend whether it be through the

medical field or any one of the prominent companies here. There is a large middle-class

demographic. Many of these people may not hold money as their pursuit, but rather

their recreation of choice. Others are simply middle-class. Then there are all of the

people who serve these groups while earning a minimum wage. There is also a

prominent homeless community present in Bend. We recognize that all of these groups

need Jesus whether they are poor in spirit or monetarily poor. Herein lies our local

mission field.
