Life changing approach to dyslexia Cellfield is a life changing approach to helping people overcome dyslexia and similar processing issues. Introduced to the UK by former teacher and Headteacher, Fiona Macdiarmid (who also runs the Kip McGrath Tuition Centre in Stirling) Cellfield’s unique brain plasticity based approach helps people break through the barrier to their learning caused by processing difficulties like dyslexia. Many have benefitted from Cellfield and more centres are opening around the UK.

Cellfield is a multi sensory programme which develops and strengthens the areas in the brain used by good readers. After only 2 weeks clients can gain on average 2 years in their reading age. However the benefits of Cellfield extend well beyond reading because of the positive impact on confidence and self esteem. Cellfield is life changing. Summer has arrived – a great time to enjoy being together with your nearest and dearest! If you are stuck for things to do with the kids read on for some great ideas of fun things to do together and new experiences to enjoy!!!!

1. Sleep outdoors - nothing says ‘summer’ like the chance to kip outside. If you can, find a campsite where you can go for a few days, but if you can’t get away put up a tent in the back garden. No tent? Borrow one. You’ll be amazed at the amount of fun kids can have with a few torches under canvas. Make sure they have lots of snacks – and don’t forget the singsongs! Check out www.carrshill.co.uk

2. Build a den - whether you do this indoors, in the garden, out in the woods or on the beach, you’ll have loads of fun. Joint tasks like making a den together bring out team-working skills and help you see one another’s hidden strengths. Once the den is built, do something fun like having tea in it.

3. Go fruit picking - not only will you have a good time picking your favourite fruits and discovering new ones, you’ll also be setting up your next family project which will be making jams and chutneys or just a massive fruit salad to see you through the next few days, Briarlands is a great place to pick fruit.

4. Find a geocache - geocaching is like a treasure hunt where you use a GPS device to find a container which will have some small items (maybe toys) inside. It’s fun, exciting, and there’s lots to learn (about orienteering, geography, exploration, the environment). For more information see www.geocaching.com

5. Cook on a campfire - this is a perfect add-on to your camping adventure. Get advice online about how to build your fire and what foods are best to cook on it (sausages, haloumi cheese, peppers, burgers are all easy peasy).

6. Climb a tree - there’s so much to learn in tree-climbing: how to deal with the unexpected, how to trust your own judgement, how to take a risk and how to manage failure. You learn that it’s harder to come down than to go up, and you learn how to look after your friend who falls out of the tree. And they’re all life skills that are useful for ever.

7. Start a collection - it can be anything – football cards, postcards, photographs of fun things you’ve been up to, pebbles from beaches you’ve been to. You can collect experiences as well as items: keep a book where you short review every film you watch, every book you read, or a description of every day out you have. Collections aren’t about WHAT they are, they’re about learning to organise your thoughts in a coherent, logical way.

8. Make a family tree - learning about your family history is a fascinating way to put flesh on the bones of history lessons. What’s more, grandparents and great-aunts and uncles won’t always be around to fill you in – so ask the questions now.

20 great things to do this Summer Joanna Moorhead

9. Borrow a dog for a weekend - if you have your own dog, this isn’t for you. But if you’re not a dog-owning family, having one on loan for a few days can be a hugely rewarding experience, so ask around friends who have dogs - would they like you to dog sit for a few days?

10. Climb a big hill - this can be a mountain or a fairly small hill, depending on how old your children are. Enjoy helping one another to make the climb; your reward is the view from the top, and the picnic lunch you have up there!

11. Go on a long bike ride - if you’ve all got your own bikes you probably do this all the time. If not it can be a really fabulous and different day out to hire bikes and follow a cycle trail. Pop into Cycle Hub, Stirling to check up on great family cycle routes! And remember Stirling Cycle Training provide children’s lessons in the Summer holidays – www.stirlingcycletraining.com

12. Have a snail race - find some snails, and set up the course; place bets on which snail will win, and watch the action unfold.

13. Identify at least ten constellations - invest in a good chart, wait for a dark night, keep your eyes peeled. You get a huge sense of satisfaction, and awe, when you manage to do it.

14. Track wild animals – this is something that can be done in the countryside, the local park or your back garden. Your children are looking for signs that animals have been there: pawprints, claw marks, scuff marks and – most fascinating of all for most kids – poo!

15. Find your way with a map and compass – whether you’re in the town or the country, whether it’s somewhere you know or somewhere new to you, there’s loads to learn from this. It’s tricky to work out the compass points, so a good activity

to do as a family: also great to familiarise children with maps and their usefulness.

16. Switch roles in the kitchen - if you’re usually the meal-maker, and the children are usually the table-setters, do things the other way round. Let the children plan, shop for and prepare the meal (depending on their ages, they may need some help) while you put together an excitingly-laid table. It’s always good in a family to do things a different way round…everyone learns, and there’s plenty of fun to be had.

17. Make a movie - with the arrival of the iPhone and the iPad, it’s never been easier to make a (surprisingly professional) home movie. Choose your location, put together your storyboard and...action! There are various apps that can make filming easier (eg filmic pro, which locks the camera’s settings for the duration of a shot).

18. Be a secret agent – there’s something fun about writing letters with invisible ink and it’s easy to make. Chop lemon, insert cocktail stick and use juice as ink to write a note on paper. As lemon dries it leaves an imprint on paper that can only be read when heat is applied. To read put note on a radiator or hold briefly above a light bulb.

19. Fly a kite - they’re cheap and easy to buy, or you can even make your own. Read up on tips about how to fly them on-line. There’s nothing better than seeing your kite soar into the air, knowing you’ve pulled together as a family to make it happen.

20. Create a rainy day jar - has your child ever asked to do something that you’ve not had the time for? Maybe it’s baking a batch of biscuits, building some Lego they’ve had since their birthday or showing you a dance routine they’ve created. Whenever time is against you, get your child to write the idea on a piece of paper and pop it in the Rainy Day Jar. It means you can reach into it for ideas as soon as you hear the words ‘’It’s raining!”

Include a sight test in your ‘back to school’ routine Every child dreams of what they will be one day... Pilot, fire fighter, train driver, police officer. Many professions have minimum eyesight requirements and up to one in five children have an eye condition they do not know about which may make achieving those dreams difficult. Up to the age of 7 is a critical time in the development of a child’s eyes. A sight test gives every child the opportunity to see clearly, learn effectively and fulfil their career aspirations. Mary Docherty, owner and optometrist at Ochil Eyes in Tillicoultry, is passionate about children’s eyecare. As a mother of four, she is keenly aware of the benefits of good sight to a child’s development and learning. At Ochil Eyes, we provide a fun environment for children of all ages to have their eyes tested.

Snappy Tags take the pain out of school uniform labelling

Labelling clothes is such a chore, and so time consuming. Not any more! Snappy Tag TM is the one-click way to label school uniforms and other items quickly and securely. No more sewing in labels or taking time ironing on adhesive tags that come off in the wash. Snappy Tags are similar to a small button and are fast and simple to apply. Your child’s name is laser-etched onto the tags before they are delivered to you, and names are guaranteed not to fade or wash off and will stay securely fastened. You can even reuse it on the next garment, making it a very cost effective way of identifying and labelling clothes. Snappy Tags TM also stock a Back to School Naming Kit which comes in standard size (with 25 tags and a Snappy Stickers Starter Pack) or a bumper size (with 50 tags and the Snappy Stickers Starter Pack). Snappy Tags are a simple way to make sure that lost property doesn’t stay lost. Great news for busy mums this summer! For more information and to buy Snappy Tags visit www.snappytags.co.uk

We are situated in the beautiful village of Doune, just three miles from Dunblane and open seven days a week, 9.30am to 5pm, so there are plenty of opportunities to come in and have a look, whether you are buying your child sandals for holidays or school shoes for the new term. A one snap solution

How to cope with first day nerves (yours and theirs)

You’ve bought the uniform, sewn on the nametapes and packed their book bag. Now the big first day is

almost upon you, reduce the chances of tears at the classroom door with our starting school tips.

A few days beforehand, ease them into a ‘school compatible’ routine If you’ve been enjoying the summer holidays with later nights and relaxed, lazy mornings, head towards the sort of getting up and bedtimes needed for school in advance of day one. It’ll be less of a shock than a sudden change.

Highlight the positives of school life Read stories about school together - try Lauren Child or Janet and Allan Ahlberg’s lovely books on the subject. Or recount tales of your own positive experiences (skip the anecdotes about the super-scary teacher and inedible lunches). Remind them, too, of the things they enjoyed at any settling-in visits, such as ‘ooh, you’ll be able to play with the dressing up box again!’

Pre-empt worriesYour child could be anxious about

classroom life but unable to articulate their concerns. Ask them how they’re feeling about it and listen out for anything that you can help explain. It could be, what to do if they need the loo during lessons, where you’ll be at picking up time or what happens if they don’t like lunch. Tell them that it’s absolutely fine to talk to the teacher if they’re scared or sad.

Check out the school run in advance A parent getting flustered because they’ve spent ten minutes trying to find parking or the right entrance to the building will not contribute to the calm first day vibe we’re after here.

Do a practice school run a couple of days before if it’s anything other than straightforward and make sure you know where to pick up from, as well as drop off.

On the morning, keep farewells short but sweet A quick hug will often be more reassuring than a ten minute parting ritual which makes it all seem a bigger deal than just a few hours apart. Avoid saying that you’ll miss your child too - it puts the idea in their head that they should miss you. If your little one is especially nervous, it can work well to give them a kiss on their hand to ‘keep’ in their pocket during the day.

Skip the mascara but remember a tissueIt’s not just the children who can end up in tears - it’s normal for parents to feel emotional when they first send their child through those school gates. If you think you’re about to cry, do try and hold off until you’re out of sight of your child if possible. Most four/five-year-olds will be more likely to get upset if they see mum sobbing – they probably won’t understand that it’s because you’re proud/ taken aback by how grown-up they suddenly look.

But rest assured, if tears should roll, be it yours or your child’s, you won’t be the only ones and we promise no-one will remember in years to come.

10 ways to support and encourage your young readerBack to School

We all know the importance of reading to babies and toddlers, but it’s equally vital that we continue to read to them, and with them, to support and encourage

them as they learn to read for themselves. Here are ten tips to enable you to help them on their way to becoming confident readers with a love of books.

1. Don’t force them to read if they are not in the mood. That’s a sure way to put them off reading.

2. Continue to read to them. Reading to your child not only enables them to enjoy some one-on-one time with you, but it helps them to learn about the fluency of reading as they hear you modelling appropriate speed, pacing and intonation.

3. Find different types of books – picture books, short stories, simple chapter books, poetry, etc. Try non-fiction as well – kids love to know about the world and how things work. If they are interested in the subject then they are far more likely to enjoy reading about it. Remember: you are the expert on your child; you know him better than anyone else and you will have a better idea of what subjects he will or won’t enjoy.

4. Give them time to experience the book as a whole. Don’t expect them to sit down with a picture book and read the story without looking at the pictures; pictures bring the story to life and in most books will help the reader to understand what the words are telling them.

5. If they are struggling with a word and want you to read it for them, ask them if they recognise any letters, or sounds within the word. Point specifically to parts of the word, or help them to break longer words down into shorter segments. Then blend the sounds together to form the full word.

6. Don’t tell them “you know this word” – even if you know they do. If they knew it or remembered it, they would have read it; and it’s frustrating and demoralising to be reminded that you know something but have forgotten it. Instead, help them to work the word out themselves, either using the previous tip or by asking them to look at the picture for clues. Learning to read is not just about decoding a jumble of letters, it’s also about understanding the meaning of the words in the correct context and the pictures can help.

7. If they make a mistake and don’t notice, don’t interrupt them. Let them finish the sentence before asking them to

read the word again. If they make a mistake again, ask them “Does that sound right?” or “Does that make sense?”.

8. Review the book afterwards. Ask them what their favourite part of the story was, or why they thought a certain character did something. Make sure you tell them what you thought as well, especially if parts of the storyline could have been seen differently from another viewpoint.

9. Always praise their reading efforts. Hearing you say “I was so impressed with how you worked out that tricky word using clues from the pictures” will boost their confidence and make them feel proud of their achievement.

10. Finally, let them see you reading regularly, and, more importantly, getting enjoyment from reading. If reading is a normal habit for you, then it’s likely that your child will pick up that habit too.

‘Bonus’ tip, get them to read to a pet, or a favourite teddy, if they feel more comfortable doing that.

Note from the editorsRemember, it’s free to join your local library; you can take out books, CD’s and DVD’s as well as downloading e-books. For the under 5’s there are regular Bookbug, Rhymetime Chat’n’Play and Story time sessions and for children age 5-12 there are regular Craft Sessions, Chatterbooks and Kids Book Clubs. There are even teenage Book Clubs and groups for adults and it’s all FREE!!

Hi I’m Susan Allan, I live and work in Stirling with my husband Fraser and three boys Liam, 19, Jay 8

and Daniel 4. My husband and I opened All Things Baby, a nursery and pram store in November 2013. Our shop is down by the Riverside in the same place as there has been a pram shop for over fifty years! It’s a bit of a historical building when it comes to babies and toddler shopping. We stock everything you can possibly think of for babies from cots to prams, baby essentials to beautiful baby gifts. Come and visit us at Forth Street, Riverside, Stirling. 01786 472392 Visit us at www.stirlingpramcentre.co.uk and on facebook at www.facebook.com/pages/Stirling-Pram-All-Things-Baby

Why do you like living where you do? We live in Torbex which is so peaceful but so close to lots of things for the kids to do not least we are five minutes walk from Borestone Primary which is a fantastic school. We are close to Beechwood, Thistle and Kings Park so plenty of choice. Our neighbours are all really friendly and look out for each other which is nice, the kids can go out and play and you know everyone has a lookout for them.

Favourite shop All Things Baby of course! I don’t love shopping but I love being pampered at Amore Hair and Beauty, Claire and Joanne are fantastic! Hogans Food Company in Falkirk, we love their weekly fruit and veg boxes.

Favourite parkI think Beechwood is our favourite it’s a lovely walk through it and the boys love the spinning tops.

Favourite day out Science Centre in Glasgow - we love the planetarium. We get a season ticket every year it’s such good value and brilliant fun especially when it’s raining.

Favourite child friendly restaurant The Torbex Inn is our favourite. The staff are super friendly and lovely with our noisy boys.

Favourite night out without the kids.Night out without the kids? What’s that?

Proudest eco-friendly moment We try to do our bit and I’m real proud my boys do all the recycling in the house. At the shop we do everything we can to recycle as much as possible, changing all the light bulbs! And of course offering our customers lovely products from companies like The Little Green Sheep and their organic and natural ranges.

Best planet saving tipJust do a little it’s better than nothing.

No parent should be withoutWipes and a snack for you and the kids!

Parenting pet hatesThose people that tutt when kids are just being kids. The size of kids meals at restaurants – really portion control you’ll improve your profits immediately! I cannot bare when I see parents with fancy expensive cars and they have their children in supermarket booster seats!

Favourite family holiday spotWe love going abroad to a beautiful beach; the boys love nothing more than playing in the water and not getting told off for getting wet. This year it’s Paphos in Cyprus and we have been counting the days since we booked. Cyprus is Fraser and my favourite place in the world, we’d move there in a blink, this is the first time we’ve taken the boys so watch this space we may not return.

Most loved children’s bookFor Jay - Roald Dahl – Charlie and the chocolate factory series and David Walliams – Awful Auntie is fantastic! For Daniel – Stickman and the Smartest Giant in Town – we love Julia Donaldson books.

Best children DVD or tele programmeDoctor Who of course!

Most played with toysIpads and Lego. To be honest my kids love being in the garden but on a rainy day the minecraft comes out for Jay and the batman Lego for Daniel.

Most successful foodCarrot cake with butter icing – can’t beat a good bit of cake and afternoon tea with my boys.
