Mussel Hike – September 17th Mussels are some of the oldest creatures on earth, living up to 100 years under the right conditions. They are found throughout the Minnesota River Basin including the Cottonwood River as it flows through Flandrau State Park in New Ulm. Come out on September 17th, Saturday at 10:30 a.m. for a mussel hike in the Cottonwood River and a chance to help the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) survey the mussel population in a 2-‐mile stretch of the river. Be prepared to get wet and muddy! We will be meeting down by the beach house in the day-‐use area. Bernard Sietman, DNR Malacologist will lead the hike and talk about some of the unique characteristics of mussels. These freshwater organisms live on the bottom of our rivers and lakes in both sandy and muddy conditions, under fast and slow currents. In clear water conditions you might be able to see the track of the mussel, as it pulls itself along by a fleshy foot extended outside the hard shell. Flandrau State Park is located in New Ulm. Follow Broadway to 10th Street South. Proceed west on 10th Street South up the hill to Summit Avenue. Turn left and proceed three blocks to the park entrance, next to the New Ulm Country Club. For more information on Flandrau State Park, including a virtual tour of the park, mndnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/flandrau/index.html A Minnesota State Park pass ($5 daily or $25 yearly) is required to drive into Minneopa State Parks and can be purchased at the park office.
