Fall & Winter Issue
Finding Wealth in Health Community Involvement, Commitment to Quality Service
& Above All; Caring About People
I joined BEI 25 years ago because of these traits and I am proud to say our focus
remains intact on these very important goals. From my first interview with Larry and
Gerry Dempsey in 1988 through today, we credit our success to these qualities.
Our belief in Community Involvement is evidenced in the following pages and we
would not have been in business for almost 55 years without providing quality
service to our customers. We truly care about the people in our lives; our customers,
our BEI employee team members, our friends and of course our families.
We also realize that businesses and employees face a new challenge in regards to
Health Care. Our population is aging and now the federal government believes they
have a solution to a problem that has been growing for generations; skyrocketing
health care costs.
In light of recent concerns with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act we
will continue to discuss our health, and how we pay for it, for many years to come. I
don’t know if anyone has the right answer but I do know if we all get, and stay
healthier, our reliance on Health Care can be drastically reduced.
So, it is important for us to remind everyone to take good care of yourselves. There
are many options out there to help keep you healthy and many are highlighted in this
issue. We all know folks who have lost someone special in their lives, and the grief
from those losses are multiplied during the Holidays. Let’s learn from those painful
experiences and use this time to commit to be healthy.
We care about you, so please join us at BEI as we pledge to get healthy.

New to the BEI Family:
Batavia Nutrition After Joe Walters realized he couldn’t go any higher in his previous company, he decided
to look for new opportunities. Not only did he successfully find a new opportunity, but he
also lost 50 pounds while discovering it!
Batavia Nutrition, a nutrition club located at 144 West Wilson in the Batavia Plaza
alongside East China Inn, Daddio’s Diner, and Walgreens celebrated its grand opening
with Mayor Schielke on October 5th with discounted products and free samples for all who
attended. With smoothie names like “Root Beer Float,” “Strawberry Cheesecake,” and
“Peanut Butter Cookie” you would hardly think they’re nutritional smoothies, but at
Batavia Nutrition, healthy can also be tasty. The trick is in the mix. Joe uses a variety of
flavors of the nutritional shake mix and can mix and match a shake that would please any
palate.
Joe chose Batavia as the location for his first shop because of how actively involved the
community is. “I am excited to be a part of downtown Batavia.” Says Joe, “With local
bike rides, triathlons, races and the river walk, it is easy to see how
active the members of this community are and Batavia Nutrition
supports this life style.”

And bay leaf.
Cover and cook on LOW for 6 hours, until the vegeta-
bles get soft and the flavor blend. Remove the cheese
rid and, using an immersion blender, belend the soup
until smooth (or you can carefully do this in small
batches in the blender).
Melt the butter over low heat in a large skillet and add
the flour. Stir constantly with a whisk for 4 to 5 min-
utes. Slowly whisk in about 1 cup of the hot soup, then
add the 1 3/4 cups of warmed milk and stir until smooth.
Pour back into the slow cooker and stir, add the grated
Pecorino cheese and adjust salt and pepper, to taste.
Cover and cook on low 30 more minutes.
Makes about 9 1/4 cups.

5 Ways To:
the windows when it’s dark to help keep
cold air out.
2. Let’s do some detective work. Light a
candle and hold the flame near your
windows. If you see it flicker, it could
mean an air leak. That means hot air
going out and cold air coming in. Buy
some inexpensive caulking and seal
up those leaks. If new windows are in
your future, make sure to save up and
pay cash, and only do that if the quick
fixes are no longer doing the job.
3. Small changes on the thermostat
make a big difference on what you
pay. If you’re used to having the
thermostat at 74 degrees, shave it down
to 72. You’ll probably notice the lower
heat bill before you notice two degrees.
We’re getting into the time of year
when the electric bill makes you
cringe. When it arrives in the mail, a
cold sweat might break out. You may
need to sit down because the knees are
feeling weak. And all that happens
before you actually open it!
But all is not lost. There are ways to
stay warm and keep your hands off the
thermostat. Here are five ideas for
making it happen:
1. When the sun comes out, open your
blinds and let those rays in. They can
warm the house. On the flip side, cover
4. If you do something that heats the
house up, make that activity work for
you; if you cook something in the oven,
leave the door open after you turn it off
to warm up the kitchen (watch out for the
kids though). If you take a shower, leave
the door open so the seam flows into the
other room. That’ll help with low winter
humidity too!
And if you’re really committed…
5. Pick your favorite hot beverage and
start drinking. The warmer you feel
inside, the less work the heating unit will
have to do. Prepare the hot chocolate or
tea! Also, your wardrobe can help you
stay warm. Get those socks,
sweatpants and
sweatshirts out!
Hope these tips warm
you up!

Tips from Dave Ramsey - Daveramsey.com
Wood logs in the fireplace, the smell of pine in the air, turkey with all the fixings
ready on the table and holiday cheer all around. It’s that time of the year again
that brings warmth in our hearts and tryptophan in our bellies. But what is a
merry time for most can also bring a very scary time for those watching more
than the turkey’s midsection. Here are 5 tips to get you through the holidays
while also enjoying the deliciousness of the season!

Take one from the Grinch- the season is about growing your heart 3x this year not your belly!
Create your own survival plan to stay healthy through the holidays.
What tips and tricks will keep you from adding that extra winter coat?
1. Bend Don't Break
Find a balance in maintaining
your healthy diet and enjoying the
copious amounts of food & drink
around you. Remember to be realistic
– you will have to bend your normal
routine but don’t break it entirely.
Make sure you keep up with your
workouts the days before and after the holidays.
2. Partner up
Find an exercise buddy but make sure they are
on the same page as you! You want someone
who will not let you skip out on your exercise
plans! This Healthy Holiday Buddy can also be
good support when looking for encouragement
to put that extra piece of pie down!
4. Listen to your body
Mindless snacking on hors d’oeuvres can add
up before you even start your main course. Go
for more fruit & veggie trays. Don’t lose your
head with pregame or halftime snacking! Save
some room for the main event. Also, wait 20+
minutes before going for seconds. Let your
body have some time to enjoy the food you are
giving it! Slow down, it is not a race to finish.
3. Think before you drink
Calories come in liquid form too! Alcoholic
drinks can be a tricky way for the calories to
win this season, try some lower calorie drinks
like wine and leave the eggnog out. Also drink
lots of water to keep you not only healthy but
full. Ask yourself, “am I hungry or am I really
thirsty?”.
5. Make a new tradition Although napping is another cherished part of the holidays add some movement
to this year’s routine! Make it an active one! A family walk after dinner, tag
football game outside, cut some fire wood together, snowball fight or making a
fort are all better than couch lounging. Whatever you do make sure you keep
active!
