Mark 1:3b "Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.'
In life it goes without saying that we prepare for many different things. We have to
prepare ourselves each morning, we prepare our meals, our children for school, our
duties for work. We prepare our cars to drive by gassing up and making sure we
have all the necessary fluids. Preparation is an everyday, nearly moment by moment
part of life. We are all well acquainted with preparation.
Writing under Divine inspiration and quoting from Isaiah the Prophet, Mark reveals
that John had made preparation in his own heart for the coming world/spiritual/
eternal leader and now he was asking the nation to prepare, to be ready. Jesus fits
all three descriptions. He is THE world leader, because He has a following of people
of all tribes, tongues and cultures from the beginning of time to the end. He is a
spiritual leader because He is God. And He is an eternal leader because what He has
started now will transcend time and space, to include all of eternity. No earthly ruler
can boast of such a rule, because no earthly ruler is powerful enough or worthy of
such a rule. Jesus is worthy of all power and praise, because He is no mere man,
but God.
Jesus is no mere dignitary. Jesus is no mere spiritual leader. Jesus Christ is God
and therefore calls for our full devotion and allegiance. Isaiah declared that prepara-
tion for the Lord's coming was in order. In ancient Palestine, when an important per-
son would come through your village, you would make sure the road in front of your
house was smooth, so they could pass by without incident.
What preparations do you need to make in your heart today for the Lord to flow
smoothly in and out of your mind, your thoughts, your will, your intentions, your
words, your ambition, your intentions, your hopes and your dreams. Spend some
time today in God's Word, in confession, in prayer, so that your heart will be pre-
pared for what your Lord wants you to do next. Enjoy the Lord’s company today,
knowing that He loves you more than you love yourself.
In Him,
PJV
