About Wingspan ArtsWingspan Arts is a non-profit organization that is fully insured and professionally managed. We hold our programs ON-SITE at PS 281, and work in partnership with PS 281 to offer semester-long afterschool arts enrichment classes that meet once a week. The program is staffed by Site Director(s), Site Assistant(s), and professional Teaching Artists.

A Day at Wingspan Arts• When students are dismissed from school, they are escorted to Wingspan’s central meeting area at PS 281.• Students are provided with a snack and an option of arts based activities from school dismissal until 3:30PM.• Arts enrichment classes run for 90 minutes from 3:30 - 5:00 PM• Pick-up runs from 5:00 - 5:45 PM; students again participate in a choice of arts based activities, other

supervised games, or homework.• Pick-up ends promptly at 5:45 PM; a fee of $1/minute will be charged for any students remaining after

5:45 PM; fee increases after third late pick-up. *Consistent early pick-ups (before 5:00 PM) will not be accommodated.

Tax InformationOur afterschool programs may be claimed as a childcare expense on your taxes, or used with a flex spending account! Our Federal Tax ID is 13-4189808, and our office can provide you with a formal receipt.

Financial AidWingspan Arts has a long tradition of providing need-based financial aid to our incredible afterschool communities. We do our best to ensure that every child has access to the arts, regardless of their ability to pay the full tuition for our programs. Refund Policy• If your child is not satisfied with his/her afterschool class, and withdraws within the first two weeks,

we offer a full credit to your Wingspan Arts account to be used for a future class or Half-Day program. • After the first two weeks, we offer a pro-rated credit amount to your Wingspan Arts account.• If you wish instead to be refunded to your credit card, Wingspan Arts charges a $50 refund fee.

Monday Grade Pre-K – Storytime Theatre Students will let their imaginations soar by combining storytelling with theatre! Students will hear classic and contemporary children’s stories, and then they’ll get a chance to create their own unique characters and plots! Through theatre games, acting exercises, and imaginative play, students will learn to bring the page to the stage in this literary performance class. Grade Pre-K – Movin’ & Groovin’ This high-energy class combines rhythm and dance to get everyone movin’ to the beat! Students will explore different dance and movement styles through a wide-range of fun music, imaginative games, and exercises. Students will focus on balance, rhythm, and technique on their creative search to find new ways to move to the groove! Grades K-1 – Painter’s Palette Create sketch drawings and turn them into beautiful paintings using a variety of paints and canvases! Learn how to use color and value to create light, shadows, and form. Explore composition, color mixing, painting techniques, and self-expression in this fun class! Grades 1-2 – Spanish Adventures with Lango *$15 Materials Fee This class combines songs, movement, art and crafts, and language activities to create a Spanish-learning experience unlike any other. This class is designed to foster an interest in foreign languages and cultures, as well as to promote the development of a child’s linguistic abilities. In addition to learning basic vocabulary words and phrases (e.g. colors, numbers, animals etc.), all afterschool students will read a book from our signature Lango Kids series. These books follow the Lango Kids--Wen, Luc and Lucia, --their teacher, and Cosmo the dog on their various adventures throughout the Spanish-speaking world. Each story focuses on a specific set of specialized vocabulary and usually contains a sweet and simple moral. Grades 2-4 – Giant Puppets Designers in this class will create their own puppets and bring them to life! This class will give students a chance to build puppets from lollipops, styrofoam balls, vegetables and fruit, pop-up paper, and more! Every puppeteer will create unique characters with their puppets before taking them home! The class culminates in a puppetry show or gallery at the end of the semester!

Grades 3-5 – Global Theatre Through different cultures' stories, celebrations, and traditions, students will bring the world to their classroom. Students will explore life and school from children around the world, focusing on cultural diversity and understanding. The performers in this class will dance, play, and sing their way around the world!

Tuesday Grade Pre-K – Art Explorers Students will cut, paint, glue, draw, and sculpt! This class will focus on the individuality and creative thinking process of each child as images and three-dimensional forms emerge from stories, poetry, and free association. Concepts will come to life as students develop skills to communicate their ideas in unique ways. This is a great class to explore a variety of artistic mediums.

Grade Pre-K – Lego Mania *$15 Materials Fee Legos just got even more fun! In this class, students will experience the excitement and creativity of Legos and learning! This class will introduce teamwork, observation, creative thinking, and problem-solving skills while using creativity and imagination to build the most amazing creations! Grades K-1 – Mini Musical “5, 6, 7, 8!” Learn a dance, sing a song, and perform a monologue in this introductory musical theatre class. Students will learn what it takes to become a triple threat, while also being introduced to many Broadway musicals. Students will work as an ensemble to create their own original musical focusing on the story structure of major Broadway musicals. Grades 1-2 – Yogamotion Breathe deeply. Meditate. Stretch. Move! Through the ancient art of yoga, students will gain flexibility and have the freedom to dance and explore creative movement. These yoga sessions will combine emotional reflection, light stretching, breathing, various yoga poses, and meditation. Students will learn downward facing dog, upward facing dog, child’s pose, windmill pose, frog pose, tortoise pose and more! By the end of the semester, students will feel peaceful sharing all they’ve learned in a yoga demonstration. Namaste. Grades 2-4 – Star Performers Through the exploration of song and dance, students will become Star Performers! From Ariana Grande to Justin Timberlake, performers will learn to sing and dance like these amazing pop stars! Each week students will work on the vocal techniques, choreography, and personal style it takes

to become a super star! At the end of the semester, the Star Performers will dazzle in a pop concert performance! Grades 3-5 – Art of Science *$15 Materials Fee In Art of Science, students explore science creatively by using their right brain and all of their senses. They'll taste the periodic table and discover the science of music. Students will explore the solar system, space, and even dinosaurs through dance, theatre games, and puppetry. They will paint, color, and craft experiments that help them understand friction, force, chemical reactions, and so much more! This class is perfect for the creative and the curious.

Wednesday Grade Pre-K – Global Dance In this class, dancers will learn styles such as African, jazz, ballet, salsa, Afro-Caribbean, Indian, hip hop, funk and swing. They will dance to music from all over the world and participate in games and exercises that will help them listen to the sounds that make each style and culture unique. This class encourages an awareness and appreciation of other countries’ historical dance styles and inspires students to find a common colorful thread that runs through ALL movement. Grade Pre-K – Actor’s Playground Ever wondered why they call it a play? Because acting is fun! In this play-based drama class, students will experiment with improvisation, ensemble-building, and acting exercises to discover the joy of theatre. Using familiar stories, students will create theatrical worlds to learn about character, relationships, and conflict. All the world’s a stage (or a playground) in this energetic and active thespian experience. Grades K-1 – Jr. Asphalt Jungle This energetic class will be having tons of fun in the schoolyard. Students will play four square, stickball, chalk games, and many more as they explore themes of teamwork and sportsmanship. Building skills in hand-eye coordination, balance, and trust, students will enjoy games that challenge and engage them in a fun and safe way. They are bound to have a “ball” on the playground!

Grades 1-2 – Play Makers Students will create their own plays using techniques that explore movement, character, conflict, and storytelling. Improvisational exercises lead to written scenes that express the students’ imagination and address their unique worldview. The class culminates in a student-written play.

Studio Art This class is designed for students who want to develop and refine their artistic vision. Surrounded by other young sculptors, painters, and illustrators – students will work toward an understanding of each artist’s voice. This class is for young artists who want to experiment and develop skills with new and familiar mediums!

Grades 3-5 – Dance Evolution In this class, dancers will learn styles in dance has changed over time and space. Mastering dance moves in such dance styles as the two step, the foxtrot, the jitterbug, the twist, the Watusi, Hand Jive and modern dance. They will dance to music from all over the world and participate in games and exercises that will help them listen to the sounds that make each style and culture unique.

Thursday Grade Pre-K – Canvas Creations Van Gogh, Picasso, and Monet are only some of the names students will learn in this exciting hands-on class. Through the introduction of several painting techniques, students will learn about image composition, drawing, shadows, and light. With a variety of methods, students will learn about art history and also create their own pieces. Students will refine their fine motor skills and enjoy working with watercolor, acrylic, and pastels in this exciting art studio class.

Grade Pre-K – Sing Me a Story In this creative music class, young musicians express themselves by acting out stories and writing original songs. Through theatre games and improvisation, they’ll learn some basic tools of scene writing and songwriting. After playing out a few well-known stories, they’ll work together to create their own original story – and write their own all-original musical play! The young musicians will then rehearse the piece they have written and perform it in the Wingspan Arts showcase. Grades K-1 – Myths & Legends Storytellers in this class will bring Myths & Legends from around the world to life! In this class, students will use skills in literacy, teamwork, and creative thinking to devise staged versions of familiar stories. The Gods of Mount Olympus, Native American Folktales, and stories pertaining to the origin of Greek, Roman, and Egyptian mythology will serve as the foundation of this class. Students will use acting techniques and their curious imaginations to stage an adaptation of a timeless story!

Grades 1-2 – Ballet For beginners and experienced dancers alike, students will learn the basics of ballet. Dance positions, adagio stretches, and additional ballet terminology will be the primary focus of this class. Dancers will have the opportunity to perform ballet-based movement, while also strengthening their balance, bodies, and creative minds. Students will learn about the cultural influence ballet has had in the world of dance, and also choreograph their own pieces with grace and poise. Grades 2-4 – Kids Crime Lab with LAUNCH *$60 Materials FeeJoin the Launch CSI team as we investigate the mysteries of the living world through the lens of forensic biology. Designed as a suspense-building “whodunit” experience, Kids Crime Lab guides students through the discovery of clues and the tackling of challenges tied to topics such as cellular structure and DNA. Through the testing of collected samples, our junior detectives gather evidence required to analyze the case. From bacterium to blood type, kids learn how to interpret the evidential data and draw conclusions necessary to crack the case. Secret message glasses, microscopes, and DIY lab kits are just a few of the critical CSI tools that kids create and take home for further crime scene investigations! Science leads the way for these super sleuths!

Grades 3-5 – Afro-Caribbean Drumming In this dynamic class, students will be introduced to different Afro-Caribbean styles of music. They will explore Salsa, Merengue, and Cha Cha Cha, and learn about their influence on popular music such as funk, rap and hip hop. Students will be introduced to proper drumming techniques and rhythms, as well as how to create different tones and grooves. The class will culminate in a Latin percussion jam session featuring the student ensemble!

Friday Grade Pre-K – Music Makers Through songs, games, and exercises, students will learn the fundamentals of music. Students will explore dynamics, tempo, pitch, melody, beat, and rhythm - all while learning to sing and play their favorite songs. Musicians in this class will write and perform songs while gaining a basic knowledge of music theory and vocabulary.

Grade Pre-K – Creature Creations In this hands-on class, students will design their own creatures and then learn the basics of puppet making to make them come to life! There will be lots of brainstorming and building puppets from foam, cardboard, lollipops, Styrofoam balls – even fruits and vegetables! Best of all, every student will get to take their creatures home. Grades K-1 – Dance Me a Story Dance is one of the most graceful and exciting ways to tell a story. The students in this class will use stories to inspire choreography. Blending the exciting elements of plot, music dynamics, and movement, students in this class will integrate their learning into a spectacular visual story. Watch them skip, bop, and shimmy their way from “Once Upon a Time” to “Happily Ever After”! Grades 1-2 – Karate with KP for Kids *$40 Insurance Fee, $30 Uniform Fee will also apply for new students or for replacement uniforms Beginning Karate: White – Advanced Blue Belt Advanced Karate: Yellow – Black Belt

Advanced Karate Extended 30 minute section (optional);* $100 Additional Tuition For students who are advanced yellow belt and above Students will spend an extra half hour each week perfecting the art of karate. Dedicated students train in kumite, advanced kata, meditation, and choreographed fight combinations.

KP for Kids is a professional karate afterschool program staffed with well-trained instructors that demonstrate respectful behavior in an active, physical, fun-loving environment. It is KP’s philosophy that all children must be treated respectfully in order to emulate that behavior towards others. Additionally, children should have access to a safe, healthy, encouraging afterschool activity that will help develop not only their physical abilities, but also their mental focus and concentration. KP for Kids offers this in a goal oriented traditional belt karate program with the addition of incorporating healthy Pilates exercises to promote core strength for all activities. Grades 3-5 – Sculptor’s Studio Let’s build! This club is a 3-D visual arts class with an emphasis on creativity, fun and invention! Students will learn sculpture - clay, foam, paper, wire; carving - linoleum, potatoes, soap; 3-D printing; mobile, and collage. Art lessons will be based on technique, craft media and art history.
