This year the Education Committee wanted the opportunity to immerse technology into the TRENDS conference in a new, modern and progressive way. How are we going to advance technology to the next level? The answer: purchase a software product that is a mobile event management system. In essence, we are creating our own TRENDS application (app). With this app, any person who has a smart device (either Apple or Android) can download the free app. The user just goes to the app store, searches SePA TRENDS, and downloads it. There are many benefits for our users, our exhibitors, and our TRENDS planning committee. Benefits for our users include viewing their personal event schedule and bookmarking sessions and exhibitors on multiple devices. Users can search for anything in the app through a dashboard icon, create a profile, and “friend” other attendees. They can review all the speakers’ biographical information and even access their PDF documents, slides, and/or outlines. This allows attendees to bookmark the sessions that will best meet their needs in advance. Users may also take notes using the My Notes icon located on the dashboard and can also rate the sessions they attended. Exhibitors can upload their logos, PDF handouts, and videos, which can reduce printing. The exhibitors will be able to push this information to participants and even send alerts to them. The planning committee members will be able to run statistics on many aspects of the conference through this app and communicate through multiple social media outlets including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram. The planning committee can send alerts and customize this app as needed. One of the best features for everyone is that this app, considered a year round reference tool, will still be available, even after the TRENDS is over. We hope that our customers will enjoy using this new technology. If using an event management app is new for you, please don’t fret. We have an army of millennials that are available to assist anyone at TRENDS.

Introducing Something New: Our Own App - SePA TRENDS

Susan Politsky Co-Chair, Education Committee

Technology fuels every aspect of our lives: shopping, communicating, learning, paying bills, and even dating.

This will be a busy year for the Southeastern Pennsylvania (SePA) Chapter Research Committee. The committee members will hold their first meeting in September in New York City (NYC). Members (and guests) will take the New Jersey Transit train from Hamilton, NJ to NYC early in the morning of Sunday, September 18. Upon arrival in NYC, we will go to Times Square, obtain half-price theater tickets, and proceed to a local hotel to conduct our business meeting. After the meeting, we’ll have lunch, walk to the theater, see the show, and return home. This is the first time we are doing this as a committee. It will be a lot of fun!

Other program plans for this year include:

• Research Roundtable - November 2016

• Journal Club - February 2017

• Research Methods lecture - March 2017

• Research Dinner Program at the Doubletree Hotel at the Philadelphia Airport – April 2017

• Planning meeting for next year at the Restaurant School in Philadelphia – June 2017

2

A short business meeting will precede the November, February and March programs. Members and non-members are welcome to attend. We are finalizing details of each of the programs so please check the SePA Chapter website regularly for further information. April is the Research Committee’s biggest event, the Research Dinner program. This past April, Rebecca Trotter, the Director of Nursing Research and Science at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania spoke to us about Improving Communication with Non-Vocal Critical Care Patients. The dinner was preceded by a cocktail hour, which included posters displaying original research, evidence based practice or research synthesis. This event is a great opportunity for networking and meeting new people. Why not join us in 2017?

The Research Committee is a fun committee! You only need an interest in research or evidence-based research/practice to join the fun. I have met so many interesting nurses from various critical care practice areas by being a member of this committee. Please e-mail us if you would like to sample our events. The committee hopes to see you at an upcoming event!

In the spring, the board members of the Southeastern Pennsylvania (SePA) Chapter of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) discussed having a fundraising event to raise revenue for the chapter. The board brainstormed ideas and then there was mention of having a Designer Bag Bingo. Everyone supported this idea; thus, the first Designer Bag Bingo was born. June Watson and Cindy Rizzo, who had done this in the past and had a wonderful time, volunteered their expertise. Their story follows. Two years ago these nurses were asked to plan and host a Designer Bag Bingo event for Aria Health’s (now Aria Jefferson) Nursing Education Fund, which was in the process of being formed. They knew nothing about conducting a Designer Bag Bingo; nor had they attended such an event. They decided to attend a Designer Bag Bingo event to observe, learn, eat, and play Bingo! With the notes collected, and the experience gained, Aria’s first Designer Bag Bingo was held. It was very successful – raising over $10,000.

The members of the committee planned and organized the event, discussing how many games and baskets to have, what the consolation prizes would be, and anything else related to bingo. A date was chosen and the hall rented. June and Cindy thought they were ready but realized everyone had to sell tickets because ticket sales are key to a successful Designer Bag Bingo.

The fun comes in shopping for all those bags; Cindy and June immediately volunteered! They went to the mall ready to spend money. They imagined themselves as Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman as they walked into

designer bag stores, saying, “We’re buying for a designer bag bingo fundraiser.” They purchased an assortment of Kate Spade, Michael Kors and Coach bags (the easy part) and then had to determine

what the consolation prizes would be in case 2 people called bingo at the same time. To quote June and Cindy, “Shopping is the best part in planning a Designer Bag Bingo.”

With the bags, consolation prizes, and baskets (a great way to raise revenue) purchased or donated by members and hospitals, volunteers came together to put the event in place. Volunteer help is a necessity in order to have a successful fundraiser. 50/50 tickets were sold throughout the afternoon while June (Vanna White in disguise) modeled the bags even though they’d been displayed for all to see. “Oohs and ahs” were heard as June passed each table.

The volunteer Bingo caller (thank you, Dave) had the machine warmed up the balls popping, and arriving

guests held their snacks and drinks in hand as they signed in to get bingo supplies – all the while hoping they have a lucky card! When the first number was called, the fun began. The excitement and anticipation in the room grew as each number was called. Everyone waited for the shout, “BINGO!”

Fifteen games and basket and door prize raffles (left over consolation prizes) later, the Chapter successfully raised substantial revenue. At the end of the afternoon of fun, the ultimate winners were the critical care nurses who are members of SePA.

I attended the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) National Teaching Institute and Critical Care Exposition (NTI) for the first time this past May. As any true critical care nurse would tell you, this is THE conference to attend! Supersessions were an exhilarating start to each day, posters were inspiring, lectures were cutting edge, and the exhibitor hall was as overwhelmingly awesome as previous attendees try to warn you it will be.

I met Dan Harris, co-anchor of Nightline and the weekend edition of Good Morning America, after he personally autographed a copy of his new book for me titled 10% Happier. That was so cool!

I discovered the best part of NTI – the networking - was between sessions, over lunch, and during special evening programs. I had the opportunity to sit across the table from, and drink cocktails with (or "mocktails" in my case, as I was about 8 weeks pregnant at the time!), with some of the most influential critical care nurses in the country. These are the men and women who shape our best practices, drive our policies, and advocate on our behalf at the national level.

At the pre-conference Chapter Leadership Development workshop Deborah Paschal, Rose Shaffer, and I spent our time wisely gathering ideas from other chapter leaders regarding major issues that all local chapters face. Among these issues were member recruitment, retention, and the use of social networking.

These experiences were invaluable and I am so grateful to the members of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter (SePA) of AACN who not only encouraged me to attend, but also provided financial support. This is just one of the many amazing benefits of being an engaged, active chapter member. I feel more prepared and am excited to transition into my new role within the SePA Chapter as the Engagement Committee chairperson. I will be working closely with the lead volunteers of our membership, communication, and awards/scholarships subcommittees to think about different ways to engage more nurses in becoming actively involved in the SePA Chapter.

As participants learned at NTI, everything in nursing matters - getting involved, speaking up, conducting research – thus, Dr. Clareen Wiencek, the new AACN president, has chosen the theme of It Matters for her term of office. If you’re interested in learning more about SePA and what the chapter has to offer, please don't hesitate to contact us at [email protected] because nursing matters to critical care nurses.

Member, Education Committee How can I bottle up the excitement and energy from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) National Teaching Institute and Critical Care Exposition (NTI) and distribute them to my unit? That’s the question I continually asked myself during the entire conference. From the first supersession to the last breakout session, I was surrounded by nurses committed to improving themselves and their practice. Upon my return to work, I talked constantly about the networking opportunities and energy that the meeting promoted.

A major highlight of the entire conference was having thousands sing Happy Birthday to me during the supersession with Mel Robbins. During this session, she asked a participant to sing a song and the participant selected Happy Birthday. She then asked the audience if anyone was celebrating their birthday that day, May 17th. I stood up because May 17th is my birthday and I was serenaded by thousands of nurses in New Orleans, Louisiana (NOLA). What a memory to have! From the Mardi Gras parade to the jazz band to the dancing…Who knew empowering nurses could be so much fun? I don’t want to forget touring the city of New Orleans, sampling Cafe du Monde’s beignets, and taking in a haunted walking tour in the French Quarter. This was my first NTI but it will definitely not be the last. See you at the next NTI.

Rajvinder Hoonjan

I was shy nurse before the NTI. I felt lost in the nursing world. I asked myself “was I really making a difference?” NTI inspired me to become more involved in the nursing organization and to believe in my inner voice. After hearing Mel Robbins speech, I was empowered to change my way of looking at the world and taking chances. Actually, the next day I saw my hospital’s Chief Nursing Officer. I was hesitant to introduce myself to him. (I thought to myself: ‘I am just a nurse in this big hospital; he wouldn't want to talk to me.”) Then I remembered Mel Robbins' simple tool and decided to be bold and introduce myself. He was so kind and caring. I was glad I talked to him. I believe after listening to all the speeches and lectures, I improved my nursing skills, became stronger and am willing to take challenges. Now I ask myself “how I can change something that is poor practice or how can I make practice effective or better. The conference boosted my confidence and changed my life by taking one step at a time, even its scary.

Dru Brown

I enjoyed the conference immensely. The surprise Mardi Gras parade was so much fun. My only criticism was the CE process with the cumbersome computer work. I am really looking forward to next year’s conference.

Venue Committee Update

Kathy Durning Chair, Venue Committee

Planning for TRENDS 2017 is already underway! The Venue Committee is busy exploring options for our next conference by having visited at least one site for a “walk through”; more site visits are planned. The committee is also exploring what amenities and services are available to determine an appropriate setting for the meeting.

The committee has heard your concerns regarding travel distances within the allotted time frame for the breakout sessions and is attempting to keep them manageable. TRENDS 2016 will address this issue by concentrating registration, plenary and breakout sessions, and vendor exhibits in the Radisson facility. Lunch options will remain spread throughout the entire Valley Forge Convention Center (VFCC) complex. All registered attendees will receive a 15% discount on lunch purchases and those having hotel room registrations will receive a 20% meal discount at any of the VFCC restaurants or the casino food court.

We appreciate the feedback you have provided on your experiences while attending TRENDS because it enables the planning committee to make choices which will enhance your future experiences. The committee encourages you to bring friends and co-workers along to this exceptional conference.

The committee is looking forward to seeing you at TRENDS 2016!

July 2016 was a monumental month for me professionally because it is the month that I accepted responsibility as president of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter (SePA) of the

American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN). SePA was the first professional nursing organization I joined after attending my first TRENDS conference, which made me realize what it meant to be a nurse working in the intense world of critical care. I became part of an educational adventure where the air shimmered with the thirst for knowledge. Nurses from all over the country had the opportunity to network, talk, and, yes, gripe about the challenges of being a critical care nurse and learn about the benefits of obtaining certification, but most

importantly receive mentoring from a fellow nurse to help relieve the angst of being a nurse in the often intimidating, dynamic, fast-paced and high pressure world of critical care.

Being a member of SePA has allowed me to see the strength of character that nurses maintain as healthcare changes around us. People are living longer; thus, patients have higher acuities and are more likely to be chronically ill. I recently heard that in 2017 several of the major health insurers in Pennsylvania would no longer participate in President Obama’s Affordable Healthcare program because the companies’ administrators had no idea how many people have co-morbidities and how

2

sick they actually are! My first thought was did they have any nurses working for them to educate the organization about the health status of the insured and the uninsured in Pennsylvania and in the country? The acuity level for both groups is at an all-time high. My next thought was that as critical care nurses we would not accept an approach-that dropped a program or plan of care because the care has become too complex or the acuity too high. We develop protocols and standards of care to provide the best care and improve the quality of care delivered to our patients.

As a member of SePA and AACN I have been mentored to develop my critical thinking, organizational, and communication skills, and to ensure my medical, pharmacological, and nursing knowledge is current. During my year as president of SePA, I plan to continue professional and educational growth for the chapter and its members and provide the opportunity to mentor other critical care nurses in the true mission of SePA: teaching others to accept clinical challenges, conduct research, and support education. Join me and the chapter on this fantastic journey of growth in SePA!

A Message from the SePA Chapter President
