OVERVIEW

ABOUT THE PROGRAMThis program prepares students for the dynamic field of Digital Art and Graphic Design by providing a hands-

on career-oriented education. Through intensive training in visual foundations and state-of-the-art technology, students gain aesthetic awareness, problem-solving skills and the technical proficiency necessary to pursue an entry-level position in the visual communication industry. Our students can gain employment in areas such as graphic design, web design, digital imaging, 3D graphic visualization, and interactive multimedia design.

After completing the basic digital arts courses, students must choose between TWO options.

THE GRAPHIC DESIGN OPTION focuses on print, publication and page layout.

THE WEB DESIGN OPTION focuses on web, interactive multimedia, and animation.

The Digital Arts program articulates with York College (B.S. in Communications Technology); Lehman College (B.A. Specialization in Studio Art: Computer Imaging); Mercy College (B.F.A. in Computer Arts and Design); and New York Technical College (BTech in Communication Design). You can read these articulation agreements on the Transfer Planning page on the BCC website.

WHAT IS GRAPHIC DESIGN? (WHAT JOBS DO GRAPHIC DESIGNERS DO)

Summarized From The United States Department of Labor Statistics: http://www.bls.gov/ooh/arts-and-design/graphic-designers.htm#tab-2:

• Graphic designers create visual concepts by hand or using computer software, to communicate ideas that inspire, inform, or captivate consumers. They develop the overall layout and production design for adver-tisements, brochures, magazines, corporate reports and websites.

• Graphic designers combine art and technology to communicate ideas through the layout of websites and printed pages. They may use a variety of design elements to achieve artistic or decorative effects.

• Graphic designers work with both text and images. Through the use of images, text, and color, graphic designers can transform statistical data into visual graphics and diagrams, which can make complex ideas more accessible.

• Graphic design is important in the sales and marketing of products, and is a critical component of brochures and logos. Therefore, graphic designers, also referred to as graphic artists or communication de-signers, often work closely with people in advertising and promotions, public relations, and marketing.

• Graphic designers are the creators of Identity and Branding, something that all companies require to compete in the market place. Think of Target-- their logo, store interiors, and TV ads all relate to the same theme, or Apple Computers and the role graphic design plays in all their advertising, packaging and in their stores design.

“...In our modern age, it is the graphic designer that is responsible for the way the consumer inter-acts with the marketplace.” —Lisa Amowitz, Curriculum Coordinator and Department Deputy Chair.

HISTORY OF THE PROGRAMFALL 2016 Curriculum Revision — Course title and description change for ART 87 and ART 88. MUS 13 is now part of the restricted ART electives for both options. ART 81 is now required for the Web Design Option.

SPRING 2015 Added requirement of FYS 11 - Freshman Year Seminar. Students must take FYS 11 before completing 24 credits in the Digital Arts A.A.S. Degree Program.

FALL 2014 Changes to Science Electives to comply with Pathways. Students can choose from either Required Core C or Flexible Core E (3 or 4 credit courses). Lab credit is no longer required.

FALL 2012 Name change of INTERACTIVE MULTIMEDIA Option to WEB DESIGN Option— Reduction of hu-manities credit requirement from 6-7 credits to 3-4 credits. Reinstatement of ART 22 - Painting and ART 82 - Illustration to the Web Design Option. Introduction of a new course, ART 89 - Publication Design, to the Graphic Design Option.

2006 Name change to DIGITAL ARTS with two options: GRAPHIC DESIGN; INTERACTIVE MULTIMEDIA—Introduction of specialized courses such as ART 90 - Graphic Design Project for the Graphic Design Option, ART 72 - Digital Photography and ART 56 - Graphic Design History for both options, as well as specialized courses for the Interactive Multimedia option along with MUSIC 13 - Digital Sound course from the Music De-partment.

2001 Name change to DIGITAL DESIGN AND COMPUTER GRAPHICS— Along with the addition of some key new courses, such as Introduction to Typography, Web Design, and Portfolio Seminar, the faculty determined that a name change was more reflective of the direction the industry had taken.

1998 Curriculum Revision — As the industry and the curriculum matured, faculty determined that a number of ad-justments needed to be made to the course offerings to align it to the rapidly evolving industry.

1985 ADVERTISING ART AND COMPUTER GRAPHICS—In response to the advent of digitally based design, the Department of Art and Music created a new curriculum that addressed this exciting development. It was a great beginning, because by 1988, the entire field of graphic design had become completely dominated by the computer.

The degree audit report divides information into blocks:• Student View - General Information:

Name, Emplid, Transfer Credits, Academic Status, Student Group, CUM GPA, Degree, Academic Year, Credits Required, Credits Applied

• Degree – Summary of degree requirements: GPA, Remedial, OCD/FYS, Pathways, Plan/SubPlan, Writing Intensive

• CUNY Skills Requirements• Pathways General Education • Required Common Core • Flexible Common Core• Courses not Applicable to this Major• Insufficient Grades (Courses without a passing grade)• In- progress courses

Note: The Degree Audit gives you a description of the course content, co-requisites, pre-requisites, courses yet to be completed and courses completed towards the degree.

5. Compare this information against the appropriate patten sheet (see attached) to make sure your student is following the proper sequence.

6. Check student’s Cumulative GPA. Low GPA students should repeat failed courses first and stay away from difficult courses and heavy course loads. Only C or better removes F grade in repeated courses. Distance learning online courses require above 2.0 GPA.

7. Modern Language courses (ARB, FRN, SPN) require placement test prior to registering. Students should report to CO 200 (Modern Languages Department) 8:30 - 4:30 daily.
