Mayor’s MessageWelcome to the Fall 2014 edition of our Parks and Recreation Program and Event Guide. Please use the guide to find out more about our high quality programs on offer and discover new initiatives for healthy living. Please keep the guide handy, it covers the time period of September 1-December 31, 2014

Congratulations to all winners and participants in our 2014 Bloomin’ Beautiful Home and Garden Contest this past summer. It is gratifying to see the level of interest in the contest; it illustrates the level of community pride and involvement we have here in Esquimalt. Plans are already underway to expand the Contest, a Centennial legacy, for 2015.

Are you, like many of us, looking to improve your fitness but don’t know where to start? Look no further than the Esquimalt Recreation Centre. Our Certified Personal Trainers can provide fitness assessments as well as a Wellness Centre orientation so that you’re ready to meet your goals.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Esquimalt is Events! Join us at the Ribfest on September 12th through 15th for ribs, hot rods and rock and roll. In addition, the Esquimalt Lantern Festival is back! Bring your lantern and participate in a lighted walk along the Westbay Walkway to Barnard Park on September 20. Other highlights include our traditional Halloween Bonfire, and the Celebration of Lights on December 7th.

Our parks continue to be a source of community pride thanks to the efforts of the Parks Department. Invasive species removal has continued at Macaulay Point, and the department has erected signage kiosks outlining the invasive species program and local species at risk, along with maps and other interpretive information.

On behalf of Council I encourage you to explore our many parks and take advantage of the full array of recreation programs and events on offer this fall.

Yours truly,

Welcome!

The advent of the 100th anniversary of World War I is almost upon us. By the fall of 1914, thousands of young Canadians had taken up the call to arms. Over 400,000 Canadians would eventually serve overseas in what would be called “The War to End All Wars,” many of them from Esquimalt. The first Canadian troops to arrive in France were the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, formed at the outbreak of the war and a regiment with a close connection to Esquimalt.

Work Point Barracks became a key training centre. Private Charles Durfee Harper, reported in 1917 that “Each man has a cot, straw mattress, pillow, two sheets and four blankets and a shelf over his cot and pegs for his uniforms. The building is of brick with lots of windows – light, snug and warm. Our room is heated by a coal stove and also has two open fire places. It is pretty cozy, in the evenings, to sit about the fire studying.” This would prove to be a far cry from the death and disease of the Western Front.

The Archives has information on the men and women from Esquimalt who served in World War I. We are dedicated to preserving this and all aspects of our community’s heritage and you can help. If you have material that could help us tell this story, please let us know. Also, we are very interested in finding city directories from the 1950s and 1960s. Did you know, the Archives can help you research your family, your house, your neighbourhood and other interests? Come & pay us a visit!
