Honouring our past. Celebrating our present. Imagining our future. This is the motto and tag line of our Centennial 2012 and it’s worth refl ecting for a moment on these words.Honouring our past.

In Esquimalt we have so many historic stories to share: of the Coast Salish, who inhabited the area now known as Esquimalt for 4000 years before European settle-ment; of the Hudson’s Bay Company and early farming efforts; of the establish-ment of the headquarters of the Royal Navy’s Pacifi c Squadron; of gold rushes and railway construction; and of our emerging Township, incorporated on September 1, 1912, under the leadership of Reeve (Mayor) Charles H. Lugrin. If there is a com-mon theme here, it is of proud people shaping their community in an environment defi ned by its waterways: the place of shoaling waters. Celebrating our present.

Much has happened in the past 100 years. The fl edgling naval base of 1865 has grown to become the largest employer in the region, and the original town site has disappeared inside the boundaries of CFB Esquimalt. Present day Esquimalt has much to celebrate, with 17,000 residents enjoying our parks, beaches and green spaces as well as a mixture of commercial and residential development. We are a proud community and we’re not afraid to share this pride with our neighbours and visitors. (For a fascinating account of the past 100 years in Esquimalt, watch for Sherri Robinson’s Centennial Book, to be published in 2012!) Imagining our future.

Change has accelerated over the past several years – our world is changing in ways we could not have imagined – but we are keeping pace with this change, and fi nding ways to adapt to and take advantage of these changes. We are at an inter-esting juncture here in Esquimalt. I feel as though we have been climbing a hill for some time but are now cresting over the top and the landscape is taking shape in front of us, revealing new opportunities. There is much work to be done moving for-ward, but I think the hardest part is behind us. The re-birth of the E&N Railway for commuter and excursion travel, and the Victoria Shipyards proposal to the federal government are two initiatives that I am watching with much anticipation.

This is Esquimalt.

Our community pride will be evident at our Centennial Kick-off Event scheduled for Saturday, October 8th, 2011. I invite our residents and neighbouring commu-nities to join us in this offi cial launch of Esquimalt Centennial 2012 at the Town Square behind Municipal Hall. Our Centennial Committeeis planning an event that will set the tone for our celebrations in 2012. There will be music, displays, events for the kids, a 99th birthday cake, our fi re hall open house, and – of course – the barbecue will be fi red up! Please mark your calendar for this special event and help us kick off a great centennial year. For more information, please see our centennial website at www.esquimaltcentennial2012.ca.

A photo’s worth...Aug. 23, 2011 – While a strong earthquake rattled the East Coast, and ailing

Apple CEO Steve Jobs filed his resignation papers, seven News photographers were out documenting daily life in Esquimalt.

From dawn to dusk, we captured images of people at work, at play and at home throughout the municipality.

With roughly 17,000 residents in Esquimalt, as well as it being the West Coast home for the Royal Canadian Navy, Esquimalt is a hotbed of activity and a hugely integral part of Greater Victoria. We thank those who welcomed us into their homes and workplaces, who flashed us a smile as they went about their lives, and allowed us to photograph some of the people that make Esquimalt a gem of a community.
