Brownstown CampusCTC Students Build Podium for Conference

Students in the Cabinetmaking & Wood Technology program at the Brownstown campus recently built a podi-um for use at the School Leadership Conference. The con-ference was held from October 21 - 24, 2014 at Hershey Lodge. The logo for the School Leadership Conference was also added to the podium. The podium was located on-stage at the conference and was used by presenters.

Mike Dodson is the instructor for the Cabinetmaking & Wood Technology program at the Brownstown CTC and is formerly the Housing Project Coordinator for the Apprentice Green Housing Project located at the Mount Joy campus.

Architectural CAD/Design Program Gets New 3-D Printer

Students in Dave Ecenrode’s Architectural CAD/Design program have the opportunity to work with a brand new 3-D printer as part of their curriculum this year. The printer is a Dimension SST-1200e and has one of the largest printing areas for an educational printer that is on the market today. The printer has the capability to print in multiple colors and can handle larger projects in indi-vidual pieces that can be joined together when the entire project is completed.

Students will receive training on the REVIT software re-quired to accomplish 3-D printing in December and will most likely print some smaller designs in late March. The students have already printed multiple projects from files found on the Internet or that Mr. Ecenrode has created in order to learn about the capabilities of the printer.

Students will print out models for their final projects which is a house the students design towards the end of the school year. Typically, one of these projects is chosen and built by the other construction trade programs at the CTC.

LCCTC Participates in Manufacturing Week

The Mount Joy campus recently participated in National Manufacturing Week by holding a Manufacturing Open House on Thursday, October 2nd. The Open House was geared towards secondary students and their parents from 9 a.m. until noon and targeted to business and industry partners in the evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Manufacturing Week is a national event sponsored by the Manufacturing Institute. The Lancaster County Workforce Investment Board, Lancaster Chamber of Commerce, and local training partners, such as the CTC and Thaddeus Ste-vens, held several events and seminars beginning on September 29th and leading up to National Manufacturing Day on October 3, 2014.

The Electro-Mechanical Engineering, Sheet Metal Technology and Welding labs were open for the public to tour during this week and both secondary and adult education CTC instructors and recruiters were on hand to guide the tours and answer questions about the three programs.

Manufacturing jobs continue to make the Top 100 Jobs List for Lancaster County especially in the areas of Industrial Maintenance and Machining.

On September 3, 2014, the LCCTC FFA Chapter held officer elections for the 2014/2015 school year. Bethany Ditzler, President for the 2013/14 school year presided over the elections along with her Vice President, Sierra Gibble. The FFA Officers for 2014/15 are:

Andrea Snavely, President, Eastern Lebanon CountyBree-Ann King, Vice President, Manheim CentralNicole Fox, Secretary, SolancoCourtney Goddard, Treasurer, SolancoDaniela Gonzalez- Barbosa, Reporter, Conestoga Valley

The chapter held its first meeting of the school year on September 10th to develop a Program of Activities and assign members to committees. This year the FFA plans to attend several local fairs and leadership conferences, hold several fundraising events including a fruit basket sale and participate in community service work. All the members of the LCCTC FFA chapter are enrolled in the Animal Production Science & Technology program at the Willow Street Campus.

Model T Raffle

The Willow Street campus is raffling off a restored 1925 Ford Model “T.” The vehicle is listed as 1927 Ford Model “T” Touring Sedan but is titled as a 1925 by the engine numbers. The body style is a 1927, which is not uncommon given the age of the vehicle.

Students in Mr. Lingle’s Transportation Cluster program restored the Model T to its former glory over a period of several years. Initially, the vehicle required engine removal because it started but did not run because of an ignition problem. Mr. Lingle’s class removed the engine and trans-mission two years ago and made the necessary repairs to get the vehicle running. According to Mr. Lingle, “To-day the vehicle is a working, drivable vehicle that is very mechanically sound. However, several details should be attended to make it a complete restoration, mostly light-ing components.”

The Model “T” is valued at approximately $12,000.00. Five-thousand (5000) raffle tickets will be sold at $5.00 a piece or five (5) tickets for $20.00. All proceeds from the sale of the raffle tickets benefit the Transportation Cluster program at the Willow Street campus

New Program: Sports Medicine/Rehabilitation Technician

Beginning in the 2015/2016 school year, CTC will offer a certificate program in the field of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (SM/RT). Students who choose to enroll in the SM/RT program can continue their education in fields such as athletic training, physical therapy, occupational therapy, or sports medicine at a post-secondary institution. The CTC will offer dual enrollment and advanced credits through articulation agreements with local post-secondary institutions.

The program will be located at the Willow Street Campus as part of the Healthcare Center. Prospective students can contact Ben Stiles at 717-464-7050 ext 7080.

Student AmbassadorsLancaster County Career & Technology has implemented a new Student Ambassador program to promote the programs and students of the CTC. Student Ambassadors are responsible for representing the school in a positive manner and striving to convey information about the CTC to other students, business and industry partners, and to the general pub-lic. In order to maintain Student Ambassador status, students are required to have a good attendance record, maintain a satisfactory GPA, and be available for selected events.

Approximately 150 students were selected to represent the CTC across all three campuses and include 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students from all programs. All 16 sending school districts are also represented. In September and October, the student ambassadors were provided training on professionalism, the programs and policies of the CTC, and famil-iarity with their respective campuses.

To date the Student Ambassadors have participated in and assisted with the Campus Wide Open House, 8th grade tours, sending district presentations, the counselor workshop, and most recently, Junior tours. Instructors, counselors, and administrators from each campus formed a steering committee in order to implement this system-wide initiative.

In the future, the ambassador program will be extended to include local businesses and industries that support the CTC. If you are a business owner who would like to be a CTC Ambassador, please contact Kristina Myers, Business & Community Relations Coordinator at 717-847-4625 or [email protected].

CTC Holds Counselor Workshop Training

On Wednesday, October 8, 2014, the Lancaster County CTC hosted our first in-service event for secondary counselors within the 16 sending school districts. The training was developed to provide information to our participating districts about the opportunities that CTC offers high school students within Lancaster County. The event included breakfast, a panel discussion, participation in high-tech simulations that represent various programs at LCCTC, and observation of a “live” lesson taught by one of our CTC instructors.

The panel consisted of Mr. David Warren, Executive Director of LCCTC; Dr. Gerald Huesken, Superintendent of Conestoga Valley School District and Superintendent of Record for LCCTC; Dr. Michael Leichliter, Superintendent of Penn Manor School District; Mrs. Kim Sullenberger, Deputy Director of the Lancaster County Workforce Investment Board, and Mr. Dave Sload, Director of Education at Associated Builders and Contractors. The panel members were chosen to represent the views of our participating districts, as well as our workforce and industry partners and discussion revolved around the perception, rigor and promotion of the CTC and its programs.

The next Counselor Workshop is scheduled for February 2015.

Adult Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Program Moves to Willow Street

The Adult Education Certified Nursing Assistant program has relocated from St. Mary’s Catholic Church in down-town Lancaster to the Willow Street campus. According to Kirk Schlotzhauer, Director of Post-Secondary Edu-cation, the move to Willow Street is more cost effective, making the program easier to manage and allows the instructor to utilize and share resources with the other healthcare programs located at the Willow Street campus.
