Foundation Focus

When you meet Kendall Bumgarner, you instantly like her. Her warm and bubbly personality is a perfect fit for her job checking in patients at the registration desk at Norman Regional Hospital. Kendall’s positive attitude on life helps her battle complications from a life-long birth defect, spina bifida.

Spina bifida occurs when the spinal cord does not form completely before birth. At the young age of 31, Kendall has had more than 35 surgeries. In March, the unthinkable happened. One of the shunts designed to empty spinal fluid from her head suddenly quit working. This was the beginning of a series of complications that landed her in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Norman Regional Hospital.

Shortly after she was admitted, her condition became more critical as her lungs started filling with fluid. Kendall had to undergo a series of surgeries to save her life. Her family was always by her side including her father, Michael Bumgarner, a chaplain at the hospital. Michael said, “It has been agonizing to watch Kendall go through the things she has endured. In the midst of agony Kendall has inspired us because she refuses to allow great obstacles to keep her from living her life.”

With help of Norman Regional surgeons and medical staff, Kendall recovered and was able to resume her life. “Without Norman Regional, I wouldn’t be here,” Kendall said. “The ICU doctors and the nurses are the reason why I am still alive.”

Kendall still has a long road ahead of her but, with the excellent care she received at Norman Regional, she is back at work doing what she loves, greeting patients. Your gifts to the Norman Regional Health Foundation were used to purchase new medical equipment for our ICU. Your generosity touches the lives of our most critical patients, like Kendall. Thank you for your generous support of our critical mission.

Giving Kids Beautiful, Healthy Smiles

Local children receive healthy smiles through the fourth annual Children’s Dental Clinic Event

Thirty-one children from Lincoln and Wilson Elementary schools received much needed dental treatment including sealants, fillings, and extractions. Many of these children come from families that otherwise would not be able to afford dental care. This program is made possible by a partnership with the Foundation, Norman Regional’s Health Promotion and Education department, Moore Norman Technology Center, and a grant from Delta Dental of Oklahoma Oral Health Foundation.

Former Foundation Director Surprised by DedicationKathey Drummond is honored for her years of dedication and service

On May 23, The Foundation honored Kathey Drummond for her 17 years of service to the Foundation, Health System, and her community. Several of Kathey’s friends, family, and former coworkers packed the hallway on the 2nd floor of the North Tower of Norman Regional Hospital for the presentation. Jim Wade, BancFirst President and board member, revealed a large plaque dedicating the Foundation’s gift to the North Tower renovations in her honor. The presentation came as a complete surprise to Kathey. “At my age, you get a lot of surprises in your

life. I have never been as surprised as I am in this moment,” she said. Although Kathey retired in 2011, she still continues serving the hospital as a volunteer for the Auxiliary. The Foundation secured a $1.9 million grant for the renovations and contributed an additional $200,000 in donations to complete the project.

Kathey Drummond is surprised by the Foundation’s tribute.

Marty Cain is an Attorney at Cain and Cain, PLLC. He and his wife, Tamara, have two boys. Marty enjoys fishing, hunting, playing golf, and traveling with his family. Marty says, “I wanted to join the other passionate members of the Board who are giving back to their community and its hospital by contributing advice with respect

to the development of a planned giving program to support the Foundation and its future.”

Patrick Livingston, DO is a Family Medicine physician. He and his wife Suanne have three children. He enjoys music, loves golf and fishing. “I am interested in preventative health, and hope that by supporting the Foundation we can build a healthier community together,” said Dr. Livingston.

Welcome New Board Members

It is a national trend that fewer students are pursuing careers in healthcare. This may leave you wondering about the quality of treatment you and your loved ones will receive in the future. Your donations to the Foundation’s Scholarship Fund are an investment in the best and brightest upcoming healthcare professionals.

This year, more than $42,250 in scholarships was awarded to 24 deserving students. Recipients were chosen based on character, academic achievement, and financial need. “It means so much to have the support of the community that I love and plan to work for someday,” said Melissa Bugg, future Doctor of Medicine. “The scholarship will enable me to depend less on loans and I truly appreciate your generosity!” Her sentiments echo those of the other students who are extremely grateful for your support.

Rumble Ride Raises Funds for RehabilitationEmployees start their engines for new event and raise funds to support the Rehabilitation Hospital

In May, the Foundation hosted its first annual poker run, the Rumble Ride. Health System employees volunteered to run the event to support the work of the Foundation. Their efforts paid off, raising nearly $1,800 for renovations to Norman Regional’s Rehabilitation Hospital!

“I had a fantastic time driving through the picturesque Oklahoma back roads with my Mom and dog, Mitzy. It was a fun event and for a good cause!” said Bridget Pekah.
