Governor General’s Message To all Companion Knights,

I would like to express my sincere appreciation for each and everyone for electing me as your Governor General for this biennium. This is an honor I take very seriously and look forward to my service on behalf of our great organization.

During my biennium, I hope to inspire more involvement of all Companion Knights. I would really like to impress on all our Companions to take a look at our „Purposes‟, then in your college meetings decide on a plan to meet these purposes. These are the reasons that this Sovereign College was founded, and we should all strive to achieve our stated purposes.

The 53rd General Assembly held in Pittsburgh proved to be one of our best. Those in attendance had a great time. One of the highlights was the presentation of the York Rite Medal of Honor to Brother Ernest Borgnine on Saturday Night. Brother Borgnine and his lady Tova were most impressed.

For those who were unable to attend the 53rd General Assembly, I would like you to meet your Sovereign College Officers for the 2010-2012 biennium. All of our Officers have served in many offices, in all branches of Masonry, and they have received many honors as well. Due to limited space we cannot list all honors and offices held, only a short synopsis will be given.

I look forward to meeting many of you during my travels during the next two years.

R.E.D. Brother David G. Brother Rigdon has received many honors and has served in many offices, a few to mention are; KYCH in 1995; KYGCH in 1998; Coroneted 33° in 2001 and served as Grand Master of Masons of North Carolina in 2007; as well as Grand High Priest in 1998.

Brother Ernest Berry, serving as Grand Herald - Received the Knight of York February 24, 1975; OPC in 1983; served as Grand Governor for Michigan ; served on many committees for the Sovereign College as well as Grand Herald 2004-2008. Brother Berry has received many honors and has served in many offices, a few to mention are Coroneted 33° in 1996; International President of High Twelve International in 1997; and Most Eminent Grand Master General of the Convent General, KYCH in 2003.

R.E.D. Brother Rev. Robert J. Cave, serving as Primate General - Received the Order Knight of York March 25, 1996; OPC in 2000; elected a Regent in 2004; served as Grand Governor for New York; and has served on many committees for the Sovereign College. Brother Cave is currently serving as Primate General since 2000 and is the Chairman of the Necrology Committee for the Sovereign College.

R.E.D. Brother Rev. Ronald E. Wood, Jr., serving as Associate Primate General - Received the Order Knight of York August 21, 1993; OPC in 1999; served as Grand Governor for Missouri. Brother Wood currently serves as Associate Primate General since 2007 as well as a member of the Necrology Committee for the Sovereign College; Currently serving as Grand Senior General of the United Grand Imperial Council, Red Cross of Constantine USA.

R.E.D. Brother Douglas L. Jordan, serving as Seneschal General - Received the Order Knight of York November 7, 1981; OPC in 1989; elected a Regent in 2003; served as Grand Governor of Virginia; and has served on many committees for the Sovereign College; he currently serves as Seneschal General since 2004. Brother Jordan has received many honors and has served in many offices; a few to mention are Coroneted 33° in 2009; and currently as Deputy Sovereign Grand Master in the progressive line of the Grand Council of Allied Masonic Degrees; as well as Grand Scribe of the Grand Council of Knight Masons of the United States of America.

Brother Richard Eppler, serving as Grand Herald—Received the Knight of York October 25, 1986; OPC in 1996; served as Grand Governor of Connecticut and on many committees for the Sovereign College. Brother Eppler has served as an officer in many of the different bodies; he is currently serving as Thrice Illustrious Master in his Council and Recorder/Treasurer for his Commandery.

Dupee, serving as Preceptor General - Received the Knight of York September 19, 1987; OPC in 2000; elected a Regent in 2008; has served as Grand Governor and on many committees for the Sovereign College. Brother Dupee is currently the Provincial Grand Marshal for the USA for the Order of St. Thomas of Acon and is in the progressive line of Officers for the Grand Council of Allied Masonic Degrees of the USA and Grand Council of Knight Masons of the USA.

R.E.D. Brother Van A. Evans, serving as Marshal General - Received the Order Knight of York January 8, 1983; OPC in 1986; elected a Regent in 2002. Brother Evans has served as Grand Governor for Mississippi as well as on many committees for the Sovereign College. Brother Evans has also received the KYCH and KYGCH; Coroneted 33°; Great Chief of Knight Masons of the Grand Council of Knight Masons; and is currently General Grand Treasurer, General Grand Chapter Royal Arch Masons.

Hinton, serving as Grand Organist - Received the Order Knight of York November 17, 1984; OPC in 1998; elected a Regent in 2004; Brother Hinton has received many honors and has served in many offices; a few to mention are Coroneted 33° in 1991 and currently serves as the Grand Recorder for his Council and Commandery.

The York Rite Sovereign College of North America wishes to express its deep sorrow over the death of

Roy E. Van Delinder, Jr. Born - October 15, 1934 Died - August 24, 2010

Most Preeminently Distinguished Brother Roy E. Van Delinder, Jr., K.C.P.C., K.G.C.Y. was the most senior Regent of this Sovereign College and was serving as a

member of the Board of Directors at the time of his passing. He was elected to membership in 1960, received the Order of the Purple Cross in 1969, and

elected a Regent in 1972. He was elected Deputy Governor General in 1990 and installed as Governor General in 1992. Received the Knight Commander of the

Purple Cross in 1994, and Knight Grand Cross of York in 1999.

His Masonic Career started in 1956 with Corinthian Lodge #1088 F&AM. He held numerous offices in the different branches of Masonry. Most Preeminently Distinguished

Brother Roy was known for his excellent ritual work, and served for many years as the Director of Ritual for this York Rite Sovereign College.

His Life was marked by outstanding service for over 32 years in the Rochester, New York School District where he served as a teacher and an administrator. He retired in 1991 as Vice Principal of the Edison Technical and Occupational

Education Center. He served in the House of Delegates, New York State Teachers Association and with the National Education Association.

Most Preeminently Distinguished Brother Roy E. Van Delinder, Jr.

served as 1st Lieutenant with the U.S. Air Force and as Captain U.S. Air Force Reserve.

May our heavenly Father have him in his holy keeping, Soft and Safe to you my Brother, be your earthly bed.

Bright and Glorious be your rising from it. That which Virtue unites in death may not separate, Amen and Amen.

On July 24, 2010 at the Saturday Grand Banquet, Five Hundred and Thirteen (513) Companion Knights and their ladies welcomed the 2010 recipient of the York Rite Medal of Honor, Brother Ernest Borgnine and his lady Tova.

Brother Borgnine addressed those in attendance and expressed his appreciation to the York Rite Sovereign College for this great honor. After the banquet Brother Borgnine and Tova were gracious enough to sign autographs and pose for photographs with our Companion Knights.

A few of Ernest Borgnine‟s accomplishments - Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from three separate institutions. Recognized for his support of the Navy Memorial Fund with the Lone Sailor Award. He is an Honorary Chief Petty Officer from the Navy Chiefs. Honored by the Commanding Officer of the California National Guard for his support of the Military with the California Commendation Medal. Veteran of the Year 2000 by the Veteran‟s Foundation. Received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor .

Brother Borgnine is a Freemason, his Masonic career spans 60 years where he first started in Abingdon, Virginia in Abingdon Lodge No. 48. He holds membership in Monroe Chapter No. 64, Solomon of the Silver Trowel Council No. 24, Malta Commandery No. 19, and Western North Carolina York Rite College No. 78 all located in North Carolina. Brother Borgnine is a 33º Scottish Rite Mason and has received the honor of Knight Grand Cross in the Southern Masonic Jurisdiction . He is a member of Valley of Long Beach, Orient of California Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, a Life Member of Al Malaikah Shrine in Los Angeles and a Life Member of the Provincial Grand Lodge of the USA for the Royal Order of Scotland.

On behalf of the Tennessee Companion Knights and Ladies, I would like to welcome you to the great Volunteer state of Tennessee and the world famous Grand Old Opry and the 54th General Assembly of the York Rite Sovereign College of North America to be held July 27-30, 2011 in Nashville, Tennessee.

The officers and members of Central Illinois College No. 42 had their stated assembly May 22, 2010 in Pekin, Illinois with 26 members and visitors in attendance. The Order Knight of York was conferred, and two new members were welcomed. They are: Carl Rambaud and

Fred Barlow.

R.E.D. Brother Perry W. Foltz, Grand Governor for Illinois, was introduced and made a few comments on the work conferred by the Colleges in Illinois. As this was also our annual meeting, the election of officers was held with the following results: Earl F. Wys, Preeminent Governor; Arlo R. Sloan, Deputy Governor; Jim L. Grimm, Chancellor; Richard L. Lasswell, Treasurer; and Robert L. Cook, Secretary. Three recommendations for membership were read, and all three were

elected.

The Companion Knights of Fort Henry College #61, Wheeling, WV, held their quarterly assembly at the Scottish Rite Building, Wheeling. Attendance was impacted by other Masonic activities across West Virginia but fifteen (15) Companion Knights did attend.

Following the business meeting, Distinguished Brother Paul V. Cottrell, OPC and Past Governor - Charles W Wise 137, Huntington, WV, spoke on two topics (1) his railroad experiences and (2) George Washington. A suggestion was made for Fort Henry to schedule a visit to Golden Triangle College #32, Pittsburgh in late March, 2011. All three WV Colleges along with Ft Steuben (Ohio) will be invited to make the journey. Golden Triangle 32 is the mother College of Fort Henry, and Fort Henry is the mother College of C W Wise 137, Huntington, WV and Fort Steuben 194. Steubenville, OH. Two of Ft Henry's Charter Members - Fritz Doepken and Ophir Vellenoweth - survive. Golden Triangle confers the Order Knight of York once annually, and already has eighteen (18) candidates for the March, 2011 Assembly.

Following the Assembly, several C.K.'s had fellowship at a Wheeling restaurant. The attendees Aug 14 were: C.K. George Birklein, PG; C.K. William Corbitt; D.B. Courtney Jones, OPC, PG, Past Department Commander-East Central Department and Past Grand Commander (among many other titles); C.K. Steve Junkins; C.K. Roger Linger, Past Grand Commander; C.K. Ron Mann, Deputy Governor; D.B. Harold Phillips, OPC, Secretary; C.K. Richard Riddle, PG, Grand Sentinel-GCKT; C.K. Donald Showalter, Past Grand Commander; D.B. Harold Vitalie, OPC, PGG, Treasurer, Past Grand High Priest; D.B. J. Stephen Wilson, OPC, PG, Past Grand High Priest, currently Grand Commander KTWV (among other titles); C.K. Charles Witt, Preeminent Governor.

The WV Grand Governor is Ronald E. Jones, OPC, a member of Martinsburg 175. The next scheduled Assembly of Ft Henry 61 is November 13, 1pm, Scottish Rite Building, Wheeling. We look forward to greeting you then, if not sooner.

ASHMOLE YORK RITE COLLEGE NO. 108 - Annual Assembly Montgomery, Alabama

On May 14, 2010, Ashmole York Rite College No. 108 in Montgomery, Alabama, held its annual assembly for the election and installation of officers. During the previous year, Ashmole YRC had the distinct honor of having Three Past Grand Masters of The Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of Alabama serve as its top three officers.

Roger A. Simmons was elected Governor, James A. Smith was elected Deputy Governor and Sterling Hughes was elected Chancellor for the 2010-2011 year. Chancellor Hughes is the current

Senior Grand Warden of the Grand Lodge of Alabama. Ashmole‟s distinguished membership includes a number of current and past Grand Lodge officers. The installation of officers was presided over by the Grand Governor of the State of Alabama for the York Rite Sovereign College of North America, Arthur L. Campbell III.

On Saturday, April 17, 2010, Detroit College No. 1 was the host for a very special day in the State of Michigan. The 12 Colleges in Michigan came together to confer the Order Knight of York on 26 candidates and named the class in honor of the Most Worshipful Grand Master Donald L. Carman.

All 12 Colleges participated in conferring the Order Knight of York, which was conferred in the beautiful Detroit Commandery No. 1 Asylum.

In attendance was Companion Knight William Waltsgott, the last living charter member of Detroit College No. 1, he turned 96 years old on May 19, 2010; two Past Governors General Most Preeminently Distinguished Brothers Wayne E. Turton and James E. Winzenreid; several other Distinguished Grand Lodge officers and Grand Officers from the other York Rite Bodies were in attendance (two Grand Lodge Officers were candidates in the

class.) At the end of the day, special certificates prepared by the Most Preeminently Distinguished Brother Edward H. Fowler, Jr., Governor General were presented to Most Worshipful Grand Master Donald L. Carman and to Companion Knight William Waltsgott.

We had 130 Companion Knights in attendance for this special day and 102 stayed for the lunch, afterwards.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Detroit York Rite College No. 1 again for hosting this day and thank all of the Companion Knights and Colleges for attending, participating, bring candidates and showing what the York Rite College are all about, UNITY. Wonderful food was served by the Ottumwa group; fellowship and comradery was outstanding amongst all present. We are all confident that Ottumwa will continue to build on this successful event and become totally active once again. It was a long day with numerous Companions and Sir Knights tearing down and preparing to leave since they had a long trip ahead. A few of those who were helping were Right Eminent David Dryer, Department Commander of the North Central Knights Templar, Grand Commander of the USA; Very Eminent George Harrison, Deputy Grand Governor and Governor of Iowa York Rite College; Preeminent Randy Crouch, Governor Lewis & Clark; Jason Wolcott, Deputy Grand Master; Greg Anderson, Grand Captain General; Right Eminent Sir Knight Bryce Hildreth, Grand Commander; Rich Martin, past Governor Lewis & Clark; Billy Joe Hildreth, Grand Scribe and Past Grand Commander; Charles Byars, Grand High Priest; Frank Osdoba, Grand Captain of Host and professional photographer; and many other outstanding York Rite Masons with a total of 60 percent. To all Associate Regents, As Governor General for this biennium, one of my goals is to inspire more involvement of our Companion Knights. Whether serving in the Sovereign College or in your Constituent College, it is something I think all Companion Knights should consider. At the General Assembly of the York Rite Sovereign College, which is held every year, our highest honor we have to bestow on our members is conferred on approximately 130 of our finest Companion Knights. These Companion Knights are nominated by their peers and then receive the unanimous approval of all the Regents present at the General Assembly. The Order of the Purple Cross of York is a most impressive Order. Those who have received this honor would agree. In the past years, the Order of the Purple Cross has been conferred, in a most impressive manner, by the Officers of this Sovereign College. However, at the 54

th General Assembly to be

held in Nashville, Tennessee, in order to involve more companion knights, it is my hope to have a truly great team of ritualists from our Associate Regents confer the Order of the Purple Cross. I know that we have some of the greatest ritualists in our membership; it would be an honor to have you serve on this team. The 2011 General Assembly will be held at the Nashville Airport Marriott Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee on July 27-30, with the Conferral of the Order of the Purple Cross taking place on Saturday, July 30

th. If you are interested in volunteering for this degree team, please contact the

Sovereign College Office with your name and contact information. All those interested will be contacted, so please consider giving of your time and talent for this conferral of the Order of the Purple Cross. If your college receives any type of notice from the IRS please send it directly to the Sovereign College Office. The Auditor for the York Rite Sovereign College prepares the 990 for all the Constituent Colleges - PLEASE DO NOT FILE A 990 FOR YOUR COLLEGE

When submitting an article or photo for the Crusader, this can be done thru email or regular mail. Do not submit photos which have been reproduced on a copy machine or send photos via fax. The picture is distorted and will not print correctly.

Orders can be sent to the Sovereign College thru email, fax, or regular mail. We ask that members please contact the Secretary of your college to place an order.

All By-law amendments, must be submitted on the proper forms and include the signature (approval) of the Grand Governor of the Jurisdiction. If the amendment is not on the proper form and does not have the approval of the Grand Governor it will be returned to the college.

The Detroit Office will be closed on the following days in observance of Thanksgiving - November 25 & 26, 2010; Christmas - December 24, 2010; New Years Day - December 31, 2010.
