H agar was an unwilling victim…a servant whohad to do what Abraham and Sarah said. Whensuddenly her world turned upside down, she

gods and spiritual darkness. Away rom God’s people andGod’s presence and God’s promises.

Are you running? From someone or something? Whoeveror whatever it is, don’t blame God. I understand thedesperate desire to run romthem, but not rom Him. Andbesides, running away never really solves anything, does it?It just delays resolving the issue.

But Hagar ran. As her sandaled eet moved swi tly over therough, rocky terrain that emptied into an endless desert, shemust have been eeling lonely and con used and terri iedand angry. Her heart must have been beating out o herchest when . . .he angel o the Lord ound Hagar near a spring in the desert.(16:7) Scholars agree that when heAngel o the Lord appeared in the Old estament, it was a“theophany” or an appearance o the pre-incarnate Son o God . . . to a woman . . . not a man;to an Egyptian . . . not a descendant o Abraham;

to a sinner . . . not a saint;to a slave . . . not a king.

What an undeserved, gracious intervention o the Creatorin Hagar’s wretched, piti ul, sin-soaked li e. He sought her. . . and He ound her.

Why did God intervene? Why didn’t He just let Hagarrun away and keep on running until she was totallyremoved rom Abraham’s li e? Te Elim Con erence in Wales drew 1500 people om all o er theUK and the world. It was a blessed time o ministry, one highlight o which was to share the plat orm with my tra el assistant and daughter, Morrow Reitmeier, as she shared her testimony.

Hagar turned around, not petulantly or reluctantly or hesi-tatingly, but with the joy o knowing she hersel . . . not justAbraham, but a little Egyptian servant girl . . . she hersel hada personal relationship with the living God, the Creator o the Universe! I can almost see her clasping her hands toher chest, eyes wide with wonder, as she exclaimed,You arethe God who sees me . . . I ha e now seen the One who seesme.(16:14)

As Hagar slipped back into Abraham’s household that night, ignoring the stares o the other servants and the glare o hermistress, was there a purpose to her steps and a light in hereyes and a glow on her ace and a smile on her lips and a peacein her heart? Did she look past the stars in the sky that werenot as numerous as her descendants would be, and whisperto hersel , He sees me. He sees me! God sees me . . . and I ha e seen Him! 1

P raise God! he miracle o Christmas is that God hasseen you and me! He has come down to ind us on

our path o sin and sel -destruction because He loves us! Andin the Baby o Bethlehem, we have seen Him!

Merry Christmas!

A s Hagar knelt to get a re reshing drink romthe spring, did she hear a sound that was morebeauti ul than the sound o the gurgling water,

clearer than the sound o a singing bird, so ter than thesound o the desert wind, tenderer than the sound o herown mother’s voice? I wonder i Hagar’s eyes were soblinded by the dust mingled with her tears, that it tooka moment or her to ocus. When she did, she musthave seen a rather shadowy, mysterious igure gazing

at her with a compassion that reached back be ore theoundations o the world were laid, and reached aheadall the way to the cross, and reached up all the way toheaven, and reached down to her . . . right there . . . onthe desert road that led to Egypt.

As she listened, she heard Him ask, Hagar, ser ant o Sarai, where ha e you come rom, and where are you going? (16:8) He knew her name! He knew who she was! And He cared enough to get involved in her li ethat was alling apart . . . Hagar, will you talk with Me or a moment about what you’re doing and where you belong? Hagar, let’s think this through care ully. . .together.

Did Hagar choke on her sobs, her breath coming inragged gasps, as she poured out her heart to Him? I’mrunning away rom my mistress, Sarai.(16:8) She toldHim exactly what she was doing.

And did He put His arms around her, pull her headonto His chest, stroke her hair, and just hold her close toHis heart or a ew moments until her sobs grew quieterand her breathing more regular? hen did He gently whisper as He instructed,Go back to your mistress and submit to her . . . I will so increase your descendants that they will be too numerous to count . (16:9-10) In other words, Hagar, the only way to resolve this entire mess is torepent o your sin. urn around. Go back. I you do, I will bless you immeasurably.

D o you really want to resolve the mess you’rerunning away rom? Do you want God’sblessing to all on you? hen the irst step is

to turn around in your attitude, reverse the direction o your sel -will, and submit to His authority wherever He places you.

urning around is so hard to do, isn’t it? It’s pain ul toturn around, to admit your ault, to ace the person, to pay the price, to con ront your own shortcomings andsin while leaving the other person to God. But I canalmost hear the applause o heaven as those who havegone be ore encourage and challenge us, Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times o re reshing may come rom the Lord, and that hemay send the Christ, who has been appointed or you--e en Jesus.

he pathway to the ullness o His blessing is repentance!urn around!
