Middle School / High School Guidance 3

Check out the Guidance Calendar on the school website for upcoming events, including college visits and Falcons on-campus events!

Agendas are still available in the Counseling Center.

Be patient! (Campus Agendas)

Pa-tient: capable of waiting; able to endure waiting, delay, or provocation without becoming annoyed or upset. What is patience? To be patient is to wait calmly and confidentially for the results of your efforts. Patience is an understanding that all things take time. Patience is a sign of wisdom and draws upon confidence and optimism.

Freshmen and Sophomores - Maintain academics and stay involved.

Juniors - If you haven't already, start looking at colleges and universities. Register for the PSAT which will be given on October 19, 2016, in the Media Center. Visit the Counseling Center with $15 cash or check made out to Falconer Central School. Prepare for the PSAT which measures academic skills you'll need for college. It serves as an entry point to National Merit Scholarship Corporation competitions and practice for the SAT.

Seniors - Continue visiting and meeting with college representatives. Apply to colleges using the Common Application or SUNY Application. Make sure you register for either the SAT or ACT. Create your Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID at fsaid.ed.gov. Complete your FAFSA as soon as possible after October 1 at fafsa.ed.gov.

Guidance Corner

Be tolerant! (Campus Agendas) Tol-er-ant: accepting different views; accepting the differing views of other people, e.g. in religious or political matters, and treating the people who

hold these different views fairly. What is tolerance? Tolerance means to understand and respect people who come from different backgrounds or have different opinions and beliefs. A tolerant person recognizes that everyone is a unique and valuable individual with their own special purpose and capabilities. Tolerance sometimes requires patience and always thrives on politeness and understanding.

What’s this Selborne Project? · Working and learning outdoors

· Adults that walk with us go out with their child’s class · Adults that have walked before have LOVED IT!

The Selborne Project was started in 1993 through the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History. The sixth grade team transforms the Falconer community into an outdoor classroom. Sixth grade students start by mapping a square kilometer that includes the school, local businesses, and historical landmarks in the village. Students go on to study birds, trees, houses, wildflowers, and invertebrates by recording their findings in a nature journal. With such a rich history and a variety of activities/assignments, your child will create a long lasting memory of Falconer, New York!

This year, there will be three sessions - Session 1; September 26-30, Session 2; February 13 - 17, Session 3; May 30 - June 20.

FCS Student Mentoring Program 2016-2017 Mission Statement: The Falconer Central School District mentoring program encourages positive youth relationships and builds self-confidence in the school setting. This will be achieved through one on one routine contact between Middle School students and High School Mentors. All aspects of this program are designed to support the FCS Counseling Center & Falconer Central School Mission statements and goals while also adhering to the FCS code of conduct. Mentoring Program Goals: Increase school attendance Create positive school interactions and relationships Develop social & emotional coping skills Increase academic performance

10th Grade Fundraiser The Class of 2019 will be selling candy and candles in late October through early November. Help support the Sophomore Class and enjoy relaxing candles and delicious candies! Orders will be delivered before the December break; just in time for gifts and parties over the holidays. Thank you for your support!

Class Ring Orders Jostens will be outside the cafeteria on October 25 to take orders for class rings. Students in grades 10 - 12 are eligible to order class rings. Information envelopes will be available at the beginning of the month. Payment plans are available. Show your Falcon Pride with your FCS Class Ring.

Save the Date for the MS Play Falcon Productions is hard at work to produce its fall Middle School Play. This year over 20 students are currently working with Directors, April Binkley and Jen Mikula, to have “The Skokie Detective Charter School” ready for its performances on Friday, November 4, at 7:30 p.m and Saturday, November 5, at 2:30 p.m.

Consider Tennis Think SPRING?? Yeah right.... This is an advertisement for recruitment for BOYS' TENNIS. No experience necessary. All you need is a t-shirt, shorts, and sneakers. Mrs. Barbara Tordella (aka the 6th grade math teacher) will supply the rest. The boys' tennis team season extends from March through May. There are many Middle School and High School boys that do not participate in baseball or track. Give boys' tennis some consideration! Mrs. Tordella ([email protected]) is looking to build a team of players that just like to hit the ball around the tennis court! She would LOVE to have you join the team!

Lady Falcon Soccer Champions The Lady Falcons became the 2016 Andrea Morton

Memorial Tournament Champions by beating Silver Creek 7-1 in the championship round. The girls also beat Cassadaga Valley 9-1. Lexy A. received the Andrea Morton Memorial Award.

Key Club News The Key Club is in full swing, providing service to the local community and raising funds for the upcoming international service trip to the Dominican Republic. This fall, this great group of kids will be serving dinner at the Kiwanis Chicken Barbecue, providing childcare during Falconer PTO meetings, volunteer ushering at the Reg Lenna, ringing the bell for the Salvation Army, and participating in many more service projects.

Parents' Nights Out are continuing this year, once per month. The next is scheduled for October 28. FCS Students in grades K - 5, and similarly aged children of FCS employees, are invited for a night of Halloween Fun in the High School Cafeteria. Parents can an enjoy an evening to themselves for just $10 for the first child and $5 for additional children in the same immediate family. Students can wear their costumes and look forward to an evening of fun with their friends. Kids can be registered at the door for this event!

Key Club is also planning on hosting the first community wide Falconer Turkey Trot 5K Run on Saturday, November 26. The race will begin and end at the High School Gym. Costs will be $25 per runner, which includes registration and an event T-shirt with pre-registration. Participants are asked to bring canned food items in exchange for raffle tickets (for prizes!). Proceeds will support Key Club service projects and all food donations will be given to the community food pantries. Please check the school website and Facebook for registration links, starting on October 11. Any local businesses that would like to sponsor our race (and get your logo on our t-shirts!), please contact Key Club Advisor, Mary Plumb, at [email protected].

Thank you in advance for our community's generous support of our efforts! Our motto: BElieve THEre is GOOD IN THE WORLD.

Students Present to the Board of Education

Fenner students are using technology to enhance their learning experience! Fourth grade students, Hunter C., Hunter P., and Myles P., presented to the Board of Education in June. The students showcased programs such as Project Propel, Snap and Read, Epic!, and Google Classroom on the iPad. A one-to-one device initiative was launched for a group of students in April. The students shared the impact this technology has made in their own learning experience.

Fenner’s Garden of Plenty Fifth graders from Ms. Bloomquist's class did a unit on plants last spring. The students started tomato, pepper squash, cucumber, and pepper plants that they took home to grow. The class also planted a small garden at Fenner with the extra plants they had. Robert's Nursery and The Biodome Project in Jamestown donated plants to fill up the garden. As school started this fall, the peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers were starting to get ripe. There was enough produce that this year's class was able to pick vegetables for the cafeteria. Students enjoyed fresh vegetables grown right at the school. We hope that we can expand this project in the future.
