22 National Schools Constitutional Conven-nd

Fairvale High School 2017 Captain, Harry Ly, was one of 120 Year 11 and 12 students selected across Australia to participate in the 22nd National Schools Constitutional Convention. The conference was held at The Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House in Canberra from 15 - 17 March 2017. Harry said he was " honoured to have been given this once in a lifetime opportunity."

The National Schools Constitutional Convention programme provides senior students with an opportunity to become better informed about how Australia's Constitution provides a democratic framework and encourages them to take an active interest in the operation of government. The topic of the 2017 Convention was ‘Indigenous Australians and the Constitution’.

Facilitated by Emeritus Professor John Warhurst AO, Professor of Political Science at the Australian National University, the students considered a range of arguments relating to Indigenous Constitutional recognition. This included input from a panel of experts, group discussions on the issues and the opportunity to persuade other delegates of particular approaches. Students participated in a mock referendum to determine the outcome of their deliberations.

The Convention was funded by the Australian Government Department of Education and Training as part of its ongoing commitment to civics and citizenship education.

In becoming a national delegate, Harry Ly was selected from around 4,000 students from government, independent and Catholic schools, most of whom took part in feeder conventions in their home state or territory.

"This was a fantastic opportunity to go to Canberra and debate current constitutional reform issues at The Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House. I really enjoyed the open dialogue and chance to debate issues important to Australia's future" said Harry.

The Fairvale High School community congratulates Harry on his excellent representation of both our school and state at this prestigious event.

Term 1 is drawing to an end and it is pleasing to see so many students enthusiastically participating in their respective courses and extra-curricular activities.

Mid Semester examinations are in progress and Year 12 students can now look forward to receiving their reports early in Term 2. Please ensure that the feedback recommended from class teachers is given attention and followed through. Parents/Guardians are most welcome to contact the Year Advisers, Ms Barreca and Ms Alalikin, or the appropriate Head Teacher to discuss their son’s/daughter’s progress.

The staff have benefitted from a weekend conference focusing on Positive and Collaborative Workplace Culture. Thank you to the P&C for supporting this professional learning activity.

Term two is the time when the winter uniform is worn and students will be wearing either the junior or senior tie. Ties are available from the uniform shop which is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

As well, we would encourage all parents/guardians to support our endeavours in ensuring that Fairvale students present themselves with pride in the local community. This can be achieved by the wearing of full school uniform to and from home.

We trust that you have a relaxing and safe April Holidays.

Regards,

Mrs K Seto

FVHS visits the Treasures of VERSAILLES

On vendredi le trois mars (Friday 3 March), Mrs Navarro’s Year 11 French class had the pleasure of visiting the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra to discover the Treasures of Versailles. We were lucky enough to explore the unique artefacts from the original Palace of Versailles, located in France. Some artefacts even dated back to the 18th century! The class specifically enjoyed the part of the gallery that was dedicated to Marie Antoinette who reigned alongside Louis XVI of France. We learnt that she was barely a teenager before she married the king!

Overall, we enjoyed our time at the Versailles exhibition as we learnt a variety of new information about French history and the events that occurred leading up to the famous French Revolution.

Year 10 Fieldwork Excursion to Garie Beach

On Friday 10 March 2017 students in Year 10 attended an excursion to the Royal National Park- Garie Beach. This was part of year 10's mandatory fieldwork requirements. Students were able to work on their geography skills including mapping, measuring and recording phenomena in the real world. It's not as boring as it sounds! Year 10 students had the chance to finally put their knowledge to the test in the REAL WORLD. While visiting the beach students took on the role of artists, but

professional artists. Despite working under extreme conditions (the oh so annoying wind from the waves and the salty sand on our faces) our young geographers were able to produce some extraordinary field sketches. You can see these "geniuses" at work in the picture. I guess they really do have each other's backs. The focus on the excursion was Coastal Management, which is really important for the sustainability of our beautiful beaches (we have to look after what we love!). Sand dunes are disappearing fast! Students found out why, and became mini-engineers carefully planning structures, barriers, fences around the beach area to make sure our sand dunes stay put. But of course, like everything else in life, it needed to be tested! The teachers from the environmental centre was nice enough to come around with a garden-blower to create some "wind" for our structures. Check it out! Our structures did alright! We were scientists without the lab coats (as we tested the pH of the water), we were explorers WITH a compass, but most of all we ARE geographers! We will continue to work on our understanding of our environment... because we Learn to Look after what we Love. Mother Nature!

S.T.E.M classes for 2017 have been a great success. We have done a lot of fun activities that have not only tested our mathematical skills, but our teamwork and engineering skills. One of the activities we did was build cars out of food. Over the 3 weeks we had to develop the activity, our teamwork, mathematic and engineering skills. We had a large variety of foods to choose from. There were two lessons of which we just invented and learnt from our mistakes to better our final design. When the time to finally put our creation to the test, we found out that our cars had oxidised and decomposed into thin, weak nothing. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough time to re-create our designs but we did learn a large amount of life lessons. One of our more recent activities is building our own boomerang. We incorporated the physics behind how the boomerang worked such as lift, spin angular velocity and other things like that. We used adobe illustrator to create our design and then measured it to fit perfectly on our piece of wood. Over all, we have a great time in S.T.E.M and love the incorporation of science, technology, engineering and maths.

Fifty-three Year 10 students took part in the STEPS Program – Strive Towards Educational Participation and Success at Western Sydney University, Campbelltown this week. Students were given a workbook and took part in a number of activities including matching interests to careers using the Good Careers Guide and the Bullseye Charts asking question of a panel of “Unimate” students who were their mentors for the day. visiting three areas in Science and Health – Podiatry, therapeutic Recreation and Medical Science. It was great to hear from one of the presenters, Lisa Pham who was a 2013 Fairvale High School graduate and is in her fourth year of Podiatry. It was an informative day and a great opportunity as it encourages and supports the aspirations of students and works with them to provide as much practical information for them so that they can make better-informed and more assured choices about their futures.

ENID – Aim High, Think Big

Adriana and Nina from ENID presented a workshop on empowerment for girls early this month. The aim was to enhance self worth and confidence while enabling peer encouragement and support. The name ENID comes from Enid Lyons, who was the first woman to be elected to the Australian House of Representatives in 1943 as well as the first woman appointed to the Federal Cabinet in 1949. She was passionate about women’s issues and also is the great great Aunt of Nina – one of the co-founders of ENID. The students who participated said they felt more positive about achieving their goals and more confident in making choices. Students can ask questions or advice at any time from the website – www.enidnetwork.com.

Not Quite 300 - Year 11/12 Ancient History Re

The army was assembled and armoured up, although some were more fully armoured than others. The warriors marched in proper hoplite battle formation as they established themselves in the pass at Thermopylae (at the side of Wright Block near the bubblers). There they waited with anticipation for the arrival of the massive Persian forces coming in from the north (the Hockey Field). Leonidas (Gina) inspired her troops with outstanding rhetorical questions: you know, the ones were they are not expecting an answer but you think about it in your head. I think Demeratus (Kim) did call out an answer but I’m not sure. The speech was so good that they all cheered in unison at the end hitting their shields with their spears. I was surprised as I’m not sure if they realised that they made a commitment to all die in the end. There was a rustle on the field and the Spartans quickly formed up, shields locked and spears at the ready. Pausanias (Sydney) called out, “For Sparta!” Immediately there was a resounding “For Sparta!!!” by the entire army. Oh, except for Brasidas (Brittany) she was tying her sandal at the time. The Spartan line braced for impact as the Persians massed into the narrow pass. First contact went to Menelaus (Anthony) as he felled one of the Persian “Immortals”. The Persians continued to swarm as their numbers quickly diminished from the fighting skill of the red cloaked Greeks. Xenophon (Chelsea) took out at least twenty Persians while Alcman (Cleo) ended thirty. Tyrtaeus (Jessica) took the initiative and change her grip in the three metre Greek spear, projected it unexpectedly from underneath the Hoplon (shield) sending another forty embarrassed Persians to Hades. After a long arduous struggle, the Persians found a way through the mountains (Wright Block) to attack the brave Spartans from the back as well. Their fate was now sealed. There was no chance of escape. The Greek heroes, defenders of Greece (Wright Block Shelter), stood their ground. They formed into a circle and prepared themselves for the final assault. The Persian King Xerxes said “Give us your weapons!” Achaikos (Lucy) said “Come and take them!”To which The Persian leader called out, “But we can launch enough arrows to block out the sun.” Epaphras laughed and replied, “Then we will fight in the shade.” The Persians began their attack. Arrow after arrow they shot until the last Spartan was no more. The Persians marched through the pass. Some time later Helodorus (Maya) arrived to find many slain Persians and a pile of almost 300 Spartans. She was sad. She was late to the battle because she slept in.…but she immediately erected a grand monument to the memories of these fallen Spartan Heroes. This is why we remember them today.

Hospitality Students Taste TAFE

On Thursday 16 March 2017, five Year 12 students (Sasha Elisha, Michelle Dang, Rosy Nguyen, Miriam Yousef and Jana

Jabado) visited the Hospitality Faculty at Wetherill Park TAFE. Students received a tour of all the classrooms, met teaching staff and completed a quick workshop on folding serviettes and table presentation. The courses available to them in Hospitality were explained as well as the responsibilities of front of house employees. Students also met

with the TAFE student consultant Carol Davis who supports enrolled students at Wetherill Park TAFE. Although the visit lasted only an hour, it gave students a better idea as to what to expect at TAFE, allowing for a more informed decision towards further study.

SRC Trainning Day

The 2017 SRC training day was an outstanding event. Thirty (30) Student Council Representatives attended the training course where we learnt all the core and compulsory tools to become great leaders. This day was held at Canley Vale RSL where we were provided with great a facility for our event as well as food and drinks. Some of the events we did involved reading passages without saying the particular word that was written. We had to elaborate the scenario and explain it in a thoughtful and understanding way. This helped us improve our skills of making quick and accurate statements on the spot which is one of the fundamental leadership skills needed in order to be a great SRC representative. All in all, the day was a great success and we all went home with a new set of skills which will definitely assist us in the future.

Sol Silva - Year 7 Representative

Every year on the 21 of March Harmony Day is celebrated and for 2017, the message was everyone belongs. The day is a recognition of diversity and belonging for everyone that calls Australia ‘home.’ To celebrate Harmony Day, every student was given an orange ribbon to show their support for multiculturalism. Additionally, the SRC had created three frames, adorned with the message everyone belongs. We went around at lunch, taking photos of students and their friends to promote the spirit of belonging and inclusiveness. A basketball game was held at lunch in the COLA, with the students and teachers playing for their respective houses to promote house spirits. After two intense matches, Greenway and Florey were triumphant. True to the Harmony Day’s spirit, many students either participated in the games or got their photos taken with a friend. It was a day to highlight the diversity we have at Fairvale and promote one of the school’s core value of inclusiveness. Remember, everyone belongs!

Welcome to the PDHPE section of Fairviews!

With an energetic and tremendous start to the year, students have been involved in many learning activities, sporting events, assessments and units here at Fairvale High School. Here are some of the few items year groups have been involved in in PDHPE… Year 7: Year 7 have officially completed a whole term at high school, consisting of a practical Gymnastics Floor Routine Assessment task, a theory Lifestyle Behavior speech and many fun and educational PDHPE lessons. This term, Year 7 have been involved in a healthy lifestyle unit, consisting of many different varieties and aspects of health. Year 7 students have been lucky enough to have been involved in informing and planning their own weekly eating plans, as well as identifying the different components involved in a balanced lifestyle. This will hopefully teach Year 7 to make informed and smart decisions about their overall health that will hopefully progress throughout their high school time.

Cardio Club: With the Cross Country being postponed until next term due to wet weather, long distance running and overall fitness, has been on the agenda for Cardio Club. Students have been involved in a variety of practice cross country courses, hill runs, short sprints, Beep tests, Yoyo Cardiovascular Endurance test, high intensity training, plyometric training and weights at the gym, with the main goal this year for Cardio Club, to win Lansdowne Zone Cross Country. All students are invited to join this FREE, tremendous event, held every Tuesday and Thursday morning this term, from 7.30am. Just a reminder to all parents and students; Cardio Club will be held in the afternoon, in Term 3 and 4. Be sure to like, comment and share the FVHS PDHPE & Sport Facebook page.

On the 17 of March, Fairvale played Casula High in the girls' knockout game. Our girls had a hard fought game in the first two quarters, due to first round nerves and fierce competition from Casula High. However, in the 3rd and 4th quarter the girls managed to pick their game up and thoroughly dominate. Well played to both teams and congratulations to the girls on their first round success.

Yr 9 and 11 French Excursion to Palace Cinemas,

In Week 8 the French Film Festival was held at Fairvale High School during lunch time in G12. Student's had the opportunity to immerse themselves in French culture by watching the French film, "The War of the Buttons". The movie was thoroughly enjoyed by all. At the end of the week, students from Year 9 and Year 11 elective French were lucky enough to watch a brand new French film as part of the Alliance Francaise French Film Festival at Palace Cinemas in Leichhardt. "L'Odyssey" is a biographical movie about Captain Jacques -Yves Cousteau, a researcher, scientist, inventor and filmmaker whose contributions made the general public more curious about the sea. Watching the movie in the amazing cinema enhanced our viewing experience. Not to mention the popcorn that enlightened our tastebuds. The movie itself was epic! The cinematography depicting the elements of the biophysical environment were absolutely magnificent. The Director, Jérôme Salle, skillfully shot the movie that made us anticipate the next scene and left us at the very edge of our seats. It was a great day and a fantastic language learning experience.

My Week At people2people

Hi my name is Soifua, and I am a Year 12 student at Fairvale High. After completing my Business Service VET course, I did not know anything about people2people; but I do now! This company has taught me invaluable skills. Although I am very much into science and am considering becoming a Doctor in the future, this business environment has benefited me in ways I had never thought of. On my first day on this work placement, I was accompanied by my lovely father to ensure my safe arrival to the office, because, frankly, no one likes to get lost! I remember admiring the beautiful girls walking around CBD as well as all the handsome men in suits. My first impression was the excitement of being involved in this picturesque world, even for a short period of time. I was at the front office with Gaby at the reception area (her title is people-manager) helping with some scanning. On my first day at my work placement, my supervisor, Janet, gave me work to do and she wanted me to watch how the people2people ‘people’ work in their company. That’s when I caught up with some of the unique things about people2people as a company. My second day at work placement was also exciting as I was doing a lot of scanning of resumes and updating the database with data entry. It was pretty fun for me, because I got to work with other people and they all had smiling faces, every single day! Especially my supervisor Janet, who also helped me at work. I knew I was going to miss school and that this new world would be challenging, but as someone once told me, “your comfort zone is boring”. Being a migrant, you involuntarily learn to adapt to your surroundings which is exactly what happened. The first couple of days went extraordinarily well and as the time went by, I became more comfortable with the people and more familiar with the job. For me, the best part of this week has been learning about recruitment. I was kindly allowed to sit with some of the recruitment consultants in their interviews, to observe and to then ask question afterwards. Through this and the consultant feedback about their interview, I learnt the key skills and the dos and don’ts of interviewing. This will benefit me in the upcoming stages of my life and when looking for a job in the future. Therefore, a big thank you goes to the lovely people2people team, especially my supervisor Janet for this opportunity and for making a week working at a desk, actually enjoyable!

Erth and Environmental Science

On Tuesday the 14 of February, the year 12 EES class headed on a 1.5 hour trip south to Wollongong, to learn more about that area as an ecosystem. The excursion, which lasted the whole day, consisted of walks along the beach and the hills that surrounded it, experiments that the class conducted on the land and sightseeing along the extensive and cloudy coast, everyone enjoyed observing the green landscape and listening to the excursion guides as they taught us about its history and features. At the end of the excursion, it was home time, and during the

bus ride home, McDonalds’ sight caught the attention of everyone, where we had to stop for a quick meal before heading back onto the bus and to school.

Claymation!

On Monday the 27 of March, 7A did Claymation. We had great fun doing Claymation. There were some minor disagreements we were able to resolve early as we settled into our work. Taking the pictures for the Claymation was stressful for most of us, as we had to move the clay character step by step so that the movements of the characters would flow smoothly when we watched the film. For every scene, it took our group around fifty to eighty shots to complete it and by the time we have completed the Claymation film, it took us the complete six periods with only two left for editing!

The limited time was a challenge but we got to play with hilarious sound effects during editing and the films were comical to watch. Editing was interesting because it took a lot of time and effort to shorten and lengthen the scenes. Our main strength was making clay characters look realistic and pleasant. At the end of the day, we learnt to manage our time better so did not have to rush as much. We also learnt numerous new skills in regards to making films, photography, editing and group work. The day of Claymation was so much fun and we

hope that the other year sevens have enjoyed their time doing Claymation as well.
