Faculty Tutorial: Choose Test Options

Purpose: This document is a quick reference guide to help instructors decide which test options to choose. This document explains the basic test options and related implications.

After you create and deploy a test, it displays in your course content. To edit the test options, click the chevron to the right of the test name and click Edit the Test Options.

# Item Screenshot Options Notes 1 Show test

description

Yes: Test description displays before student starts test. No: Test description does not display to students.

2 Show instructions

Yes: Test instructions displays before student starts test. No: Test instructions display only after student starts the test.

If you choose No: • This could put students

at a disadvantage by not knowing the assessment expectations.

• Prior to beginning the test, students will still see the summary of all test settings you selected.

3 New window

Yes: Test opens in a new tab, leaving students access to their Blackboard course in the original tab. This allows students to toggle back and forth between the test and resource(s) in the Blackboard course.

No: Typically used, the test opens in the current Blackboard tab.

4 Make the test available

Yes: Recommended so you don’t have to “make it available” later.

Use alternate tools to restrict student access to the assessment, such as: display dates, adaptive release, availability exceptions, due dates, or other access like including it in a hidden folder or learning module. Learn more The more restrictions you add to a test, the more likely a test will have conflicting settings that will need troubleshooting in the future.

5 Add a new announcement

No: Recommended. Use course Announcements from Home Page instead. In the announcement, add a Course Link to the Assessment to improve student access rather than

Selecting Yes sends the ‘quiz announcement’ right way—and possibly before the “display after” date. Selecting Yes does not send the announcement prior to taking the quiz.

navigating through the course site.

6 Multiple Attempts

The default is one attempt. Make your decision based on the purpose for the quiz/test.

If used as summative assessment, leave as is. Additional attempts can be added for individual users on a case-by-case scenario using the “availability exceptions” if needed. If used as a formative assessment, enable multiple attempts so students can adjust their learning based on selections and feedback.

7 Score attempts using

These options display only if you turned on multiple attempts. Select your preference based on the purpose of the assessment and the expectations you have set with students related to grading.

8 Force Completion

The default is blank (i.e., No), which is recommended.

If a student experiences an interruption to their network connection, the quiz/test will auto-submit.

9a Set Timer

Setting a timer is a good way to promote academic honesty.

If timed, select option to “Show test description to students before they begin the test.” Provide enough time for students to complete the quiz/test plus a little cushion. Avoid giving so much extra time that they can look up all the answers. To determine appropriate timing for students, take the assessment yourself and add 15-25% depending on question difficulty.

9b Auto-Submit

By default, auto-submit is OFF. A student is given the option to continue after time expires. If you turn ON auto-submit, the test will save and submit automatically when time expires.

If auto-submit is ON and a student experiences an interruption to their network connection, the quiz/test will auto-submit when the timer runs out. The timer begins when the student clicks “Begin” at the start of their assessment.

10 Display After;

Display Until

This option is one way to control when the assessment is available to students. By default , this option is not activated.

Examples: If you want the quiz/test to open on Monday morning, “Display After” Sunday at 11:59 p.m. If the test is due on Friday at 11:59 p.m., “Display Until” Friday at 11:59 p.m.

11 Due Date

Setting the due date here pus the test/quiz on the course Calendar, which is recommended.

12 Do not allow students to start the Test if the due date has passed.

By default, this box is not checked. Most instructors check the box so students cannot start the Test if the due date has passed.

If you leave the box unchecked, students will be able to begin after the due date. Their submission will be marked as “Late” and “needs grading” even if it is to be automatically scored.

13 Include this Test in Grade Center score calculations

Tests and quizzes are typically graded, which is the default selection.

The exception where you might select “Hide results…” would be a formative assessment that is being used as a learning tool and not for a grade.

14 Show Test Results and Feedback to Students

For each test, decide what you want to display: 1) Score per Question, 2) Answers—any combination of all possible answers, correct answers, submitted answers, 3) instructor feedback, and 4) incorrect questions.

Decide when to provide results and feedback (1st drop-down). You can choose two times.

By default, students will see their Score per Question “After Submission.” Some instructors like to uncheck the box and provide feedback “After Due Date.”

You choices should vary based on 1) whether assessment is formative or summative, and 2) how you want to mitigate academic dishonesty.

15 Test Presentation

Choose one: • All at Once • One at a Time Prohibit Backtracking is recommended if students can use ‘clues’ from previous questions to answer questions later in the quiz.

16 Randomize Questions

Recommended when possible.

Is not possible for questions that must be presented chronologically.

This portion of the document covers Test Availability Options with screenshots and information to help you decide which option to use.

Test Availability Options

As mentioned earlier, we recommend using alternate tools to restrict student access to a quiz/test.

Tools Screenshot Notes Display Dates

Display After + Display Until Display Until hides the quiz/test on that date/time.

Display After + Due Date

Use this option to ensure access the quiz/test and the ability to access feedback after the assessment. Due Date closes the quiz/test on that date/time.

Adaptive Release

Use this one with deliberate intention. Learn more Use adaptive release if students must achieve a certain score on a preceding item to open the quiz. The more restrictions you add to a test, the more likely a test will have

conflicting settings that will need troubleshooting in the future.

Availability Exceptions

Use availability exceptions for students who need accommodations or make-up timeframes.

Hide a folder or module

Use the ability to hide a folder or module to restrict access to the assessment without limiting the assessment availability. This approach is helpful if you are using and re-using course content.
