Part of our 190th anniversary celebrations. The creation process and the performance of this work included students from the BA (Hons) Dance Performance and Teachingdegree, as well as UCLan staff and localcommunity members. Risa will share herpractice and process for bringing trainedand non-trained dancers together to createand perform.

“My dance-making process begins with questions. In the studio, the dancers explorethe questions through movement, take theanswers and stretch them, turn them into daring partnering, whirl them through space and arrange them in patterns acrossmany bodies. I include both the incrediblevirtuosity of highly trained dancers and theunique and deeply human contributions of non-trained movers in my work. By combining them, I aim to create a rich, complex picture that is resonant with allkinds of audiences.”

This session, on theatre and performance, takes an historic journey through the development of theatre inEngland, particularly how London became known as acentre for theatrical activity, and will then move on to explore the very important work done in regional theatre.

The sessions will focus on William Shakespeare’s tragedyof Othello, a play about race and racial tensions, whichhas always been notorious but became particularly so inthe early nineteenth century.

In 1825, Ira Aldridge, a young black actor recently arrivedfrom America, took on the role in England, the first blackactor known to have played Shakespeare’s tragic ‘Moor’ before a paying audience. Aldridge also played to provincial audiences and is known to have performed inLancaster, Manchester and Preston throughout the courseof his career.

This talk will examine the very different responses thatAldridge, in the role of Othello, encountered in the theatres of the capital to those he experienced in theNorth and will also consider the range of actors who have taken the role and the implication of race to their interpretations.

Danielle McLoughlin LLB (Hons) Law graduateSenior Solicitor at PLS Solicitors

Danielle always felt destined to pursue acareer in law: "Looking back, even from a young age, I would weigh up the numerous factors and possible outcomeswhen making a decision on anything. That, and watching a few too many legalmovies meant that choosing to study lawwas an obvious choice for me.

“My lasting memories of UCLan are timesspent with friends I met whilst studying, whether that be the nights out at the Students' Union or the constant phonecalls back and forth about work.”

After graduating in LLB (Hons) Law,Danielle focused on getting as much legal experience as she could. As well asworking full-time, Danielle studied for aPostgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice. Her hard work and passion paid off as she now works as a Senior Solicitor at PLSSolicitors, specialising in Commercial Litigation and Insolvency matters.

In terms of advice for those hoping tostudy at the University, whether it be lawor otherwise, Danielle says: “Go for it andenjoy it. If you are studying law with aview to a career in it, get as much legal experience as you can as soon as you can – it is invaluable.

“Give your studies your all whilst also making sure you make time for fun. Youmake so many memories at University andit’s over before you know it, so make themost of it.”

Jody ClarkBA (Hons) Illustration graduatePart of an in-house team of skilled engravers at the Royal Mint

Jody designs and makes models formedals and both UK and internationalcommemorative and circulating coins. He recently became the first Royal Mintengraver to create a final royal coinageportrait of the Queen in more than 100years. Specialist designers from acrossBritain were invited to submit their owninterpretations of the Queen’s portraitunder anonymous cover. The winningartwork was then recommended to theChancellor and, ultimately, The Queen for approval.

“The news that my design had beenchosen was quite overwhelming, and I stillcan't quite believe that my royal portraitwill be featured on millions of coins, playing a small part in the Royal Mint's1,000-year history.

“I think it is definitely a conversationstarter. The best bit for me, is seeing mydesign on a circulating coin which is a bitbattered and knowing that it’s been on ajourney.

“I hope that I've done Her Majesty justice. I initially did loads of little thumbnail images to work out the layout, and playedaround with putting together differentcrowns, elements, jewellery and silhouettes to see which looked best. Then I picked one and hand sketched itout before working it up using referenceimagery.

“I have fond memories of my time atUCLan because I met some of my bestfriends there and the course helped withbroadening my horizon.”

“I have also gained work experience at a Fashion Networking company in Manchester, worked as an extra on TVsets, and in events and marketing at aninternational magazine.

“Lifelong memories of my time at UCLaninclude my graduation, meeting somegreat friends, and visiting China for thefirst time on a trip to Guangzhou to createa photo exhibition.
