BANGLADESH UNIVERSITY OF PROFESSIONALS (BUP) SEMESTER OUTLINE

PREFACE

1. General: This Green Booklet is primarily meant for the students of the BA (Hons) in English programme of Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, who have been admitted to BUP in the year 2019. It is equally applicable to all faculty members, administrative officers and staffs involved with the preparation and implementation of the course curriculum and the logistics involved. It contains the comprehensive Semester Outline of the courses of 1st semester and includes the Class Routine, incorporating individual columns for the Day/Dates, Class Timing, Name of the Section (A or B), Location (Classroom Number), Course Code, Topic/Event, concerned Teacher/Faculty Member and Remarks/Discussion Points. The Booklet is also a basic guideline indicating the modes of conduct of the course curriculum. It accommodates all relevant information required for the whole semester including all central events (e.g. sports, games or cultural competitions, National Day(s) celebrations, seminars, cultural programs, etc.). In a nutshell, this Booklet is a complete answer to your all queries regarding 1stSemester BA (Hons.) in English of Session 2018-19. 2. Semester Starting and Finishing Dates: The semester starts on 06January 2019 and closes on 31June 2019. 3. Timing and Conduct of Classes: Every week starts on Sunday and ends on Thursday, making it a five-day working week. Each section shall have two classes per day. So, there will be total ten classes per week for each Section. Each class shall be of 90 minutes duration, of which 60 minutes shall be dedicated for Lecturer, and the rest 30 minutes shall be spent for discussions by the students. The mode and conduct of discussions shall be designed by the class-teacher as per the „Remarks/Discussion‟ column of the „Class Routine‟ given in the following pages. 4. Discipline: BUP emphasizes utmost importance to discipline, which is equally applicable to the students as well as all faculty members, officers and staffs. Here, discipline is the order of the day. A few of the important disciplinary aspects are elucidated below: a. Discipline starts with the dress code. Every student has to follow the dress code explained to them by the authority. b. Students must attend all classes, central events and other academic activities mentioned in the curriculum of the semester. Absence from any of those events is unacceptable unless substantiated by valid reason(s) with documentary evidence(s). Excuses, such as, „I could not come in time due to traffic jam.‟ or „because there was no one at home to look after my sick mother.‟ or „because the roads went under water due to rain or bad weather.‟ or „due to political disturbances.‟, etc. will not be entertained. If any student is unable to attend class/(s), for any valid reason, either he/she or his/her parents should inform the course coordinator in advance. In terms of sickness, supporting medical documents are required to be submitted by the student to the coordinator on the first day of his/her arrival in BUP campus. c. Classes start at right time as mentioned in the Class Routine without any deviation. Any student failing to be in class within 5 minutes of starting time shall not be allowed to enter the classroom by the „Classroom Door Attendant‟. This does not mean that students shall make it a habit of routinely entering the classrooms after five minutes of the starting time. It is advised that the students should be in the classroom five minutes prior to the starting time of any class, so that they can settle down and be mentally prepared to listen to the Lecturer by heart.

3

d. Students must not engage themselves in any quarrel, physical fighting or verbally abusing each other or with any member of BUP. Such conduct may lead to the expelling of the student(s) concerned, as recommended by the Disciplinary Committee of BUP. 5. Assessment System:

It sets the quality and describes the general academic environment of the University, in addition to the class routine for the 1stSemester of BA (Hons) in English of Session 2018-19. In fact, it is a complete guideline of the students for the Semester, so that there is no room for any confusion on anyone‟s part. It also gives a clear picture of what BUP wants to impart to the students as well as what is expected out of the students. Disciplinary aspects are also mentioned enabling the students to have a prior understanding of the culture of discipline of BUP. It is expected that students shall take all instructions and information by heart and follow the same with utmost sincerity. It is worth mentioning that curriculum of BUP is not only a bundle of strict routines and their observances, but also a place where students shall learn to be a good and knowledgeable citizen with excellent presentation skill. The Semester is full of fun and frolics apart from the pure academic curriculum, which the students shall come across as the Semester unfolds with passage of time. With the hope that all students shall successfully complete the Semester with praiseworthy results, this booklet welcomes students to BUP once again.
