En la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Navarra for-mamos médicos inconformis-tas e innovadores, que aspiran a ser excelentes personas y profesionales, con vocación de servicio. Por eso, deseamos es-tudiantes que no busquen sola-mente adquirir conocimientos sino que también asuman el reto de cambiar la práctica de la Medicina allí donde traba-jen. Porque esa es una señal distintiva de la Universidad de Navarra: que acompañamos a nuestros alumnos en su desa-rrollo profesional y personal.

Las salidas profesionales de Medicina en España pasan por superar el examen MIR. Atendiendo a los resultados del examen, la Facultad de Medicina se encuentra entre las tres primeras Facultades españolas.

Cada año más alumnos prepa-ran el examen de acceso a la especialización en otros países de Europa y de EE.UU. Otro grupo de alumnos optan por la dedicación a la docencia y a la investigación, o al ejercicio pri-vado en sus países de origen.

At the moment, employment opportunities in Medicine requi-re candidates to have passed MIR, the medical residency examination in Spain. Accor-ding to figures based on exam, the School of Medicine at the University of Navarra ranks in the top three medical schools in Spain.

Every year, more students prepare for specialist training entrance examinations in other European countries and the US. Some students opt to work in teaching and research, or undertake private practice.

La Facultad y su Clínica Universidad de Navarra están estrechamente unidas al Centro de Investigación Médica Aplicada (CIMA) y el Instituto de Salud Tropical, un triángulo de docencia, asistencia clínica e investigación.

The School of Medicine and the University Clinic of Navarra work closely in conjunction with the Center for Applied Medical Re-search (CIMA) and the Institute for Tropical Health, combining the insights and input of tea-ching, healthcare and research.

Cada año se matriculan en la Facultad alumnos procedentes de la UE, Asia, EE.UU y Latinoa-mérica. Además, 200 alumnos realizan rotaciones clínicas en países de los cinco continentes gracias a los convenios para prácticas en hospitales de primer nivel en Estados Unidos, Taiwan o Europa.

International Outlook Students from other EU countries, Asia, the US and Latin America re-gister in the School of Medicine every year; and 200 students carry out hospital rotations throughout the world thanks to partnership agreements with top-tier hospitals in the US, Taiwan and across Europe.

El Centro de Simulación de la Facultad de Medicina (CSFM) de la Universidad de Navarra comenzó su actividad en el curso 2009/2010 y forma parte de la Unidad de Formación Clínica. Desde su inicio, su misión fundamental es dotar a los alumnos de grado y pos-grado una formación práctica estandarizada de vanguardia en un entorno controlado y se-guro y mejorar la capacitación médica. Además, proporciona un entrenamiento en situacio-nes clínicas poco habituales, permite la realización de procedimientos en escena-rios que recrean situaciones críticas y refuerza el trabajo en equipo, el autoaprendizaje y la autocrítica. El Centro de Simulación organiza y colabora en la docencia de posgrado con la Clínica Universidad de Navarra y ofrece cursos y talle-res a otras Facultades para la adquisición de competencias específicas.

The University of Navarra’s Simulation Center at the School of Medicine (CSFM) started operating in the 2009-2010 academic year and forms part of the Clinical Training Unit. Since the center was founded, its core mission has been to provide degree and master’s degree students with standar-dized state-of-the-art practical training in a safe, controlled environment and to improve medical training. It also provides training in uncommon clinical situations, enables practitioners to implement procedures in scenarios that simulate criti-cal situations, and focuses on teamwork, self-learning and self-criticism. The Simulation Center organizes and collabora-tes on teaching in the postgra-duate program with the Clínica Universidad de Navarra and offers courses and workshops in other Schools to enable stu-dents to acquire specific skills.

El ECOE es un Examen de Competencias Objetivo y Es-tructurado que se realiza en 5º y 6º curso. El alumno tiene que enfrentarse a distintas situa-ciones clínicas habituales en el quehacer diario del médico.

The ECOE (Objective and Structured Examination of Competences) is carried outin fifth and sixth year and re-quires students to respond to a range of common clinical situa-tions that arise in the day-to-day practice of medicine.

Cada alumno cuenta, desde su incorporación a la Facultad, con el apoyo de un Asesor. En tercer curso se le asigna un Tutor Clínico que le ayuda a alcanzar los objetivos de su formación como médico.

From their first day in the School of Medicine, each student may draw on the support of a mentor. Starting in the third year, the mentor is responsible for each student to achive their learning and competence goals as doctors.

Desde primer curso, el alum-no adquiere competencias clínicas a través de asignaturas como Iniciación a la Clínica, En-señanza Basada en Problemas y cursa asignaturas basadas en casos clínicos reales.

From first year onwards, stu-dents acquire clinical compe-tences through such subjects as Introduction to Clinical Practice and Problem-based Learning, as well as in seminars and workshops in the Simulation Center.

El plan de estudios incluye asignaturas humanísticas como Ética, Deontología y An-tropología, dirigidas a suscitar interés por las cuestiones más trascendentales.

The program syllabus includes humanities subjects such as ethics, profesional ethics and anthropology, the goal of which is to engage students’ interest in broader questions and issues.

Estos Diplomas ponen a dis-posición de los alumnos una oferta de formación específica, complementaria al grado, con el objetivo de dotarles de las aptitudes necesarias para poder iniciar con mayor soltura su carrera profesional en el ámbito de la Investigacion y quirúrgico.

La admisión a estos diplomas se realiza al finalizar 1º de carrera.

Diploma en Investigación BiomédicaEl Diploma de Investigación Biomédica se compone de asignaturas teóricas y prácti-cas que se cursan mediante estancias en laboratorios de la Facultad de Medicina, de la Clínica Universidad de Navarra y del Centro de Investigación Médica Aplicada (CIMA), bajo la dirección de un Tutor de Investigación.

Diploma QuirúrgicoEl diploma contempla asignatu-ras quirúrgicas teórico-prácti-cas como: Trasplantes, Cirugía Plástica, Cirugía de la mano o Cirugía oral y maxilofacial. A estas materias se le sumará formación específica en el Centro de Simulación a través de asignaturas que se centra-rán en las técnicas quirúrgicas y laparoscopia. En cursos superiores será recomendable realizar al menos una rotación clínica de verano en servicios quirúrgicos en hospitales con los que existe convenio.

These diploma programs provide specific training to supplement the undergraduate program with the aim of equipping students with the skills they need to get a better start on a professional career in research and surgery.

Students can enroll in these diploma programs after finishing the first year.

Biomedical Research DiplomaThis diploma comprises theo-retical and practical courses undertaken in the laboratory at the School of Medicine, the University Clinic of Navarra and the Center for Applied Medical Research (CIMA), under the supervision of a research tutor.

Surgery DiplomaThe diploma includes surgery subjects that provide a mix of theory and practice, such as: Trasplants, Plastic Surgery, Hand Surgery, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In addition, specific subjects are taught at the Simulation Center on sur-gical techniques and lapaross-copy. In the later years of the program students are encoura-ged to do at least one summer clinical rotation at the surgery services of hospitals that have signed and agreement with the University.

StructureThe international program offers two different types of courses that complement the medical degree:

To continue giving future me-dical graduates a world-class education, the International Program was developed by the School of Medicine of the Uni-versidad de Navarra. This pro-gram’s students are educated with a wider international vision through its specialized cour-sework, the English language, and clinical rotations abroad.

The first promotion of this pro-gram began in the 2013-2014 academic year and its acade-mic offer continues to grow each year.

The benefits of choosing this program include:• Nearly 50% of subjects in the first and second years taught in English.• Wider international vision through international rotations with partner university hospitals.• Exclusive opportunities to work with international specia-lists in intensive workshops.• Deeper medical reasoning and diagnostic skills through case-based teaching metho-dology.• Up-to-date medical know- ledge and research opportuni-ties through access to inter-national medical journals and databases.

In addition, first and se-cond-year students of the International Program are privileged to participate in the Summer Course, a faculty-led study tour to an international destination, as a week-long study abroad experience. This experience integrates both an intensive academy environ-ment and also cultural learning experiences.

The International Program also helps students prepare for fe-llowships or residency in other countries. For example, the School of Medicine has special permission to offer its students the International Foundations of Medicine exam, organized by the (US) National Board of Medical Examiners. This exam is aimed to prepare students who plan to enroll in the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE). This is the national examination that gives access to the residency matching program in the USA.

As mentioned, students will also be required to do clinical rotations at top interantional university hospotials such as Mayo Medical School, Universi-ty of Rochester, Columbia Uni-versity and Boston University.

When applying for admission to the program, students must prove they have the Cambridge Advanced Certificate (CAE) in English, a score of 93 on the TOEFL iBT or a score of 7 on the IELTS, along with a folder of non-academic merits. Excep-tions may be considered for students who are coming from an international school and can provide evidence that their coursework was taught entirely in English during the first and second years of Baccalau-reate. These exceptions are subject to our approval, and we recommend that requests for an exception be submitted as soon as possible.

In addition, students who wish to do the mandatory rotation abroad will eventually be requi-red to take one of the English certification tests mentioned above in order to demonstrate their level of English to partner institutions.
