Muscles of Facial expression

Their innervations

Major Arterial supply and venous drainage

Sensory innervation of the face….

The face is the mirror of the mind, and eyes without speaking confess the secrets of the heart.

St. Jerome

MUSCLES OF FACIAL EXPRESSION

Generally from skull to skin

Innervated by facial nerve

(CN VII)

Sphincters and dilators

around mouth (lips), eyes,

nostrils

Frontal Belly of Ocipito

frontalis:

Orgin : Galea

Aponeurotica

Insertion: Orbicularis

oculi and adjacent skin

Action: Draws scalp

forward and raises

eyebrows

MUSCLES OF FACIAL EXPRESSION

MUSCLES AROUND THE EYE

Sphincter: Orbicularis oculi

(Orbital, palpebral and

lacrimal parts)

Blink (spread tears across

cornea) and close eyes tightly

Note: elevators of upper lid

innervated by CN III,

sympathetics

MUSCLES OF EYE

Orbicularis oculi

Sphincter muscle of eyelid

O: frontal & maxillary bones

and medial palpebral ligament

I: tissue of eyelid

Action: closes eye

Corrugator supercilii

small muscle that lay

under the larger frontalis

muscles

Action: draws eyebrow

Medially and inferiorly

Creating vertical lines

Demonstratig worry

MUSCLES AROUND THE NOSE

Procerus - wrinkles skin

of nose

Nasalis: This muscle spans

across the nasal bone and

connects to the maxilla.

When contracted this muscle

moves the nose with limited

movement. The nasalis will

draw together the skin of the

nose, useful in an expression

of disgust.

Action:elevates corners of

nostrils

MUSCLES OF FACIAL EXPRESSION

Zygomaticus

Orgin: zygomatic bone

Insertion: corners of mouth

Action: smiling

MUSCLES AROUND THE MOUTH

Numerous dilators

(levators/depressors of

upper/lower lip and angle of

mouth)

Buccinator

Sphincter: Orbicularis orisSurrounds/closes mouth

Levetor LS & AO

Depressor LI & AO

Mentalis

Elevates and

protrudes lower lip

and elevates skin

of the chin

Buccinator

Orgin: Maxilla and

Mandible

Insertion: Angle of

the mouth

Action: Retracts

angle of mouth

MUSCLES OF FACIAL EXPRESSION

Common Facial Expressions

Smiling & Laughing: Zygomatics Major

Sadness: Levator Labii Superioris and LevatorAnguli Oris

Grief: Depressor Anguli Oris

Anger: LSAN and nasalis

Frowning: Corrugator Supercilii & Procerus

Horror, Terror & Fight: Platysma

Surprise: Frontalis

Doubt: Mentalis

Grinning: Risorius

Contempt: Zygomatic Minor

SMILING MUSCLES FROWNING MUSCLES

Levator Labii Superioris: raise upper lip

Levator Anguli Superioris: raise angle of mouth upward

Zygomaticus: draw angle of mouth upward

Risorius: draw angle of mouth laterally

Frontalis: elevate eyebrows

Depressor Anguli Oris:draw angle of mouth downward

Depressor Labii Inferioris:lowers lower lip

Mentalis: draws chin up

Platysma: draws lower lip down & back

FACIAL NERVE

It has both Efferent component and

Afferent component

Efferent (motor) component supplies all

the muscles of the

Afferent (sensory) component supplies the

Taste sensation of the Ant.2/3rd of the tongue

Course of facial nerve (CN VII)

Through the petrous part of the temporal

bone:

Through internal acoustic meatus with CN VIII

Exits skull via stylomastoid foramen, most

branches go through parotid gland

Temporal

Zygomatic

Buccal

Marginal mandibular

Cervical

Posterior auricular

MUSCLES & NERVE SUPPLY

Orbicularis oculi Temporal and zygomatic branches

Muscles of Upper Lip and Buccal Branch

Buccinator, Levator Anguli Oris

Risorius and Mandibular Branch muscles of lower lip

Platysma Cervical Branch

CUTANEOUS INNERVATION OF FACE

Branches of trigeminal

nerve (CN V):

Ophthalmic (V1)

Maxillary (V2)

Mandibular (V3)

Cervical plexus branches

(C2)

Lesser occipital

Great auricular

Greater occipital nerve

(dorsal ramus of C2)
