    Introduction Needs Analysis

Edmodo is a secure social network used by teachers to add a blended

learning component to their classrooms. Edmodo is a micro blogging tool

designed to offer a secure environment for teachers to communicate with

their students online. Teachers tend to like Edmodo because it has some

similarities to popular social media platforms such as Facebook. Although

it is made to look like Facebook, it has all the makings of a learning

management system that makes it useful for teachers, students, and

    parents.

As a learning management system, teachers can post assignments online for

their students, which can then be completed and submitted online by

students. Teachers can also create digital libraries that their students

can access to complete these assignments, which can be graded directly in

Edmodo by the teacher. Teachers can create polls, quizzes, and messages

on Edmodo that students can respond to. Students can also post notes to

their teachers and other students in their classes on the wall or within

their small groups. Teachers can use Edmodo as a calendar to assign

events and assignments. Many teachers have started using Edmodo to turn

their classrooms into virtual technology hubs that encourage student

    participation.

The state has implemented The Georgia Milestones Assessment and it is

important that students become accustomed to completing online

assignments and assessments. Implementing Edmodo district-wide will

expose students to blended learning concepts at every grade level.

    Learner Analysis:

    Learner Characteristics:

Teachers, by the nature of the profession are lifelong learners. Some

teachers may not embrace technology but are willing to offer their

students value-added experiences. When the district mandates the usage of

teaching strategies, teachers are more willing to comply.

    Learner Abilities:

A good number of teachers have never used Edmodo but have some knowledge

of social media such as Facebook. Teachers who have had success using

social media should most likely be able to adapt to the Edmodo platform.

    Learner Experiences:

Depending on a teachers perceptions of soci al media, they may bring

positive or negative pre-conceived notions about the tool. For example,

teachers might assume that certain aspects of privacy are relinquished

when using social media. Some teachers may think that is an excellent

way to communicate when a face-to-face situation is not possible.

    Identification of Desired Results

There are three objectives to accomplish in the Edmodo training session.

    Learning Objectives:

    1. The learner will be able to create or access a teacher account on

    Edmodo.

    2. The learner will be able to create a student account on Edmodo.

    3. The learner will be able to post messages to communicate on Edmodo.

    4. The learner will be able to perform classroom tasks on Edmodo.

    Overarching Understandings

Teachers who attend this session will be exposed to the idea that

Edmodo is a microblogging system designed specifically for teachers

    and students.

Digitizing a classroom is vitally important to 21 st century

    learning.

Edmodo is completely secure and safe for students.

    classroom.

Group: Within Edmodo, teachers can group students within a given

Group Code: the combinations of numbers and letters that is

directly linked to a teachers Edmodo classroom. Students use Group

Teachers will learn how to set up and activate an account with Edmodo.

Once their account is set up, they will learn about the different parts

    of the Edmodo program/window.

They will discuss how to use the Wall feature of Edmodo for communication

    between teachers, students, and parents.

After discussing the various parts of the Edmodo window, teachers will be

able to create Groups for classroom use.

Teachers will also be able to create an assignment or event calendar for

    Assessment of Learning

    Pre-Assessment

To begin the pre-assessment period, learners will need to identify terms

specific to computer usage such as URL and Browser. They will also need

to know their teacher email address and be familiar with the login and

password process. I will ask questions and verify that everyone has the

required skills and information to begin instruction. Prior to the

training date, the school facilitator should survey the teachers to

ensure that all participants will be new to Edmodo, since this is a basic

    tutorial.

    Formative Assessment

Formative assessment will be ongoing during the training. This assessment

allows the instructor to determine if the instruction should be altered

during the class in any way to allow the learners optimum learning

instruction in the training session. This also allows for qualitative

feedback during the instructional process rather than a written score.

Ideally this will take place as the teachers are creating and using their

Edmodo accounts. The teachers will be able to let me know by their

feedback during the training if the instruction is working or needs to be

adapted or changed to meet the needs of the learners.

    Summative Assessment

At the conclusion of the training, summative assessment can be obtained

when the instructor accesses the Edmodo account and monitors the

    9

teachers participation. There is one assignment post that teachers will

need to complete by replying to a note, and I will monitor these posts

throughout the training. There is also a five-question true or false quiz

    that students will complete.

The most important assessment of the training requires that I monitor

student progress with creating their Edmodo accounts. Teachers will

create their own teacher account, access their group codes, and post the

first assignment to the group they created. After the training ends, I

will monitor the activity of the training group periodically logging in

as a student to see how each trainees Edmodo classroom is being

    utilized.
