Leader’s Letter - Leaving a Legacy

Being a bona fide member of the “senior” population now, I’ve found myself occasionally pondering the reality that I’ve already lived the majority of the life I’ll live on earth. I especially “go there” as I note how much time remains on my mortgage, how old my chil-dren and grandchildren are getting to be, how much longer it takes to recover from an exercise session, and so forth. As I’ve noted my remaining time here shortening, I’ve also thought a bit about what I’ve accomplished with the time I’ve had and what I’ll leave behind. When it’s all considered, how well have I lived? Have I fought – and am I still fighting – the good fight, finishing the race, keeping (living!) the faith? (see 2 Tim 4:7) Just this past Monday Connie and I attended a memorial service for the father of a close friend of mine. We heard how my friend’s father had provided in tough times for his family and had impressed upon each of them – and the church and community families – the importance of eternal matters. The password for them to enter his house was “Jesus saves! Pretty constant reminder of eternal things, wouldn’t you say? But the really impressive aspect of this man’s life was how those he touched felt he had lived it. The many speakers of this man’s legacy repeatedly said that he had lived his life well. What had determined the “wellness” of his life’s living? It was the personal sacrifice and contribution he made to the eternal well being of others as he unabashedly passed out Gideon Bi-bles and presented the plan of salvation to countless school children, Wal-Mart customers and just about everyone he met along life’s way. Well if that wasn’t enough to make the point that a Christian should live life well with lasting, even eternal implications, Connie and I then were shown after the service a remarkable piece of writing by an 8-yr-old great grandson. The young boy had sat ever so quiet-ly in front of us during the service – well, he moved between family members on different pews a couple of times – and he mostly just looked like he was keeping busy drawing on something while all the eulogies and the sermon were presented. But he had actu-ally produced on that paper, in a spiraling pattern around the page with paragraph numbers to map the course of his composition, along with a few drawings of a cross and some animals that I thought was just scribbling, a discourse for his grandfather worthy of study: “Dear Popu, I am sorry for your los. Althow I naver met him but from what I’ve hrd he was a grat man. I know he is whaching dowen on you. And he has not dided in vane. He will be gideing you with hes hands. He was a grat man he trley had God in hes heart he lived a long life and made so meny popley happy he LOVED the lord he was a true chistren. Alow I can’t trley feel your pian he will always be in your hrat. He is with hes God. And if he had to he would die on the cross for are sins. He is probley playing with his dog right now. Love, Matthew So where did this very young mind gain such insight into greatness, righteousness, making a difference, willing sacrifice for another, personal relationship with the Father, and love of life? A case could be made for the Holy Spirit’s having just gifted Matthew with that wisdom, but I submit no small part of the answer lies in his observation of, and hearing about, such qualities in his own immedi-ate family, teachers (Sunday School?), and others who were living life well. In writing that piece, Matthew probably had imitated those he respected and then poured his own understanding into what he had seen for the purpose of uplifting his Popu. That sounds kind of like what Paul wrote about the Thessalonians: You became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. The Lord’s message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia—your faith in God has become known everywhere (1 The 1:6-8). If an 8-yr-old can learn the importance of eternal matters and pass them on to someone he felt was in need of hope and truth, can we do the same by living our lives well and sharing the Gospel everywhere we have the opportunity? I hope so. Let’s make March 2011 the time we re-dedicate ourselves to true well living that impacts lives and leaves eternal legacies. Best Blessings! Rick
