chaebol noun (pl. same or -bols ) (in South Korea) a large busi-ness conglomerate, typically a family-owned one. from Oxford English Dictionary
Chaebol refers to a South Korean form of business conglomerate. They are powerful global multina-tionals owning numerous international enterpris-es. The Korean word means “business family” or “monopoly” and is often used the way “conglom-erate” is used in English.
There are several dozen large Korean family-con-trolled corporate groups which fall under this defi-nition. Through aggressive governmental support and finance, some have become well-known in-ternational brand names, such as Samsung, Hyun-dai and LG. from WIKIPEDIA
