President’s Message

sented about APWA Certifications:

What Are They Really All About,

and Jeff May (Des Moines) was part

of a group who presented about

We Are Emergency Responders:

Public Works in Traffic Incident

Management and All-Hazards

Emergencies. Familiar faces

were also seen as John Cun-

ningham (Portland Cement

Association) and Mike Kvach

(Asphalt Pavement Alliance)

talked to the many conference

attendees as they walked

through the Expo. Considering the inspiring General Session

Keynote Speakers, vast variety

of great educational sessions,

and Expo, I highly recommend

that everyone attend an APWA

Congress & Expo at some point

in their career. The next

APWA Congress & Expo is

planned for August 30 - Sep-

tember 2, 2015 in Phoenix,

Arizona.

As an APWA member, the

amount of chapter and national

(and international) resources at

our fingertips is priceless. As

the APWA Iowa Chapter Presi-

dent, I have talked with so many

people who are passionate

about what we do for our com-

munities. We have opportuni-

ties to inspire young profession-

als, make a difference in a citi-

zen’s life, and to grow on a

personal level. This year we

have formed an Iowa Chapter

Emerging Leader’s Committee

who are working to expand

inclusiveness in our chapter.

This committee continues to

initiate Student Chapters at

Continued from cover Iowa State University and Uni-

versity of Iowa. As a chapter we

continue our effort to be more

inclusive by growing our Emerg-

ing Leaders through Iowa Local

Technical Assistance Program

(LTAP), and through our lead-

ership, networking, and educa-

tional opportunities.

We have an exciting 2014

APWA Iowa Chapter Fall Con-

ference coming soon. Ames is

hosting the conference starting

with the Golf Outing on Sep-

tember 10th at Coldwater Golf

Links. Educational and net-

working opportunities are

planned for September 11-12th

at Gateway Hotel & Confer-

ence Center. In recognition of

all of the great Public Works

activities throughout the state,

we will hold our annual Awards

Banquet during dinner on Sep-

tember 11th.

I’m fortunate in life to have

family members and a life part-

ner who support me and en-

courage me to believe I can

achieve anything I set my mind

to. I also have Public Works

friends who all support one

another as we share this lifelong

adventure.

Thank you, everyone, for sup-

porting and encouraging me

through this year as the APWA

Iowa Chapter President. I am

truly honored and grateful to

have this experience.

Iowa’s Best Concrete Paving Projects of 2013 Honored

P A G E 3 A P W A I O W A C H A P T E R N E W S L E T T E R

Submitted by John Cunning-

ham, Vice President Con-

crete Paving Association

On January 29-31, 2014,

nearly 700 transportation

leaders and builders gathered to exchange

information and recognize last year’s excep-

tional construction projects. The Iowa Con-

crete Paving Association (ICPA) hosted its 50th Annual Concrete Paving Work-

shop, which each year attracts the Mid-

west’s top engineers, highway officials, con-

tractors, and consultants.

ICPA’s 50th Workshop drew a record

crowd of 690 registrants. Registration

volume continues to demonstrate the inter-

est in concrete pavements and solutions for

today’s transportation professionals. The

numbers also confirm the (ICPA) Work-

shop’s reputation as one of the biggest

and the best paving conferences in the country. No other single state paving asso-

ciation draws participation levels as high as

the Iowa Concrete Paving Workshop.

Highlighting the three-day event was the

presentation of the 2013 Portland Ce-

ment Concrete Paving Awards. In de-

termining the winners of Iowa’s most pres-

tigious paving awards, 78 nominated pro-

jects were rated on smoothness, quality

control, general appearance and workman-

ship, contractor management, safety, and

project complexity. The ICPA and the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT)

jointly evaluated and recognized projects as

2013’s best concrete pavements built in

eighteen categories. Photos of the projects

and award presentations are available upon

presentations focused on today’s technol-

try. In addition, participants at this year’s

Workshop were treated to a motivational

speech delivered by gold-medal decathlete

and television personality, Bruce Jenner,

during the event’s Golden Anniversary

Banquet.

The banquet also served as an opportunity

to recognize some of the state’s top

engineering students through the pres-

entation of three academic scholarships.

With the award of scholarships, ICPA

hopes to recognize the best and brightest

of our state’s students and encourage

them to consider careers in Iowa’s con-

crete paving industry. This year’s schol-

arship recipients are:

Kaitlyn Aldrich of Johnston – Civil

Engineering, Iowa State University Graduate of Johnston High School in

Johnston, IA

Blake Ridenour of Monona – Civil

Engineering, Iowa State University Graduate of MFL-MarMac High

School in Monona, IA

John Kintz of Maple Park, IL – Civil

Engineering, University of Iowa Graduate of Kaneland High School in

Maple Park, IL

ICPA has presented 50 scholarships over

the last 25 years. The ICPA Board of Di-

rectors chose the 50th anniversary as an

occasion to create a dedicated scholarship

fund to solidify future support of the ef-

fort. ICPA member companies generously

donated over $25,000 this year for the

creation of an ongoing scholarship fund.

The Board hopes to double donations in

the coming months to reach their goal of

$50,000.
