Dear Zontians,
Happy International Wom-
en’s Day and Zonta Rose
Day! As we celebrate these
days, I reflect on the work
we do in Zonta. I am proud
of how our service and
advocacy efforts help to lift
women up, and I am grate-
ful for the women who
have positively impacted
me. This is a great time to
make a donation to the
Zonta International Foun-
dation in honor of those
women who have made a
difference in your life.
Our Centennial year is off
to a great start and the
Area Meetings are upon
us. Your Area Director and
the host club have been
busy preparing an informa-
tive and fun day of activi-
ties. Each Area Meeting will
have district updates,
speakers on eliminating
child marriage, learning
opportunities and lots of
networking. Your presence
is valuable, so we hope you
are able to attend.
The 63rd Commission on
the Status of Women
(CSW63) will be held from
March 11th – 22nd in New
York City. CSW is an organ-
ization comprised of NGO’s
(Nongovernmental organi-
zations) united to address
women’s rights around the
world. District 5 UN Chair
Eileen Borchardt, Advocacy
Chair Angela Brokmann
and Area 4 Director Kimm
Hrdlicka-Tigges will be at-
tending. We look forward to
hearing their update from
this event during our Area
Meetings.
The North American Inter-
district Meeting (NAIDM)
will be held in Dallas, Texas
from June 7th – 9th at the
Embassy Suites by Hilton,
DFW Airport South. The
theme of NAIDM is Empow-
ering Women – Past, Pre-
sent, Future. Zonta Interna-
tional President Susanne
von Bassewitz and the ZI
Board will be participating
in the meeting. This is a
great opportunity to meet
Zontians from around the
U.S. and Canada. Early reg-
istration ends on March
15th. To register, go to
by District 10.
Zonta International recently
released materials for the
new Women in Technology
Scholarship. To learn more

Menezes by June 1st. Addi-
tionally, there are several
deadlines coming up for
scholarships, awards and
other important activities.
Please refer to District 5’s

these important deadlines.
Thanks for all you do for
Zonta. I look forward to
seeing you at your Area
Meeting.

The Defiance Club has vamped
up their Social Media efforts,
thanks to Natalie Welker and
Chelsea Cereghin. Each Friday
they have #femalefeaturefriday!
They feature women who have
made an impact empowering
women.
The Club has donated funds to
various local non-profit agencies
to assist women and children.
Defiance is very excited to be
announcing their Club is going to
be the sole donor to establish a
Safe Haven Baby Box at the
Defiance Fire Station. This has
been very well received by the
community, including their
Mayor. They plan to meet very
soon to begin the process. Findlay
The Findlay Club is making plans
for their Spring Style Show that
will be held on Thursday, April
11, at 6:00 p.m. at the Mara-
thon Center for the Performing
Arts located at 200 W. Main
Cross in Findlay. Styles will be
presented by Papillon Boutique.
There will be Gift
Basket Raffles and
a Live Auction.
Proceeds will ben-
efit Hope House
and S.A.N.E. (See
flyer, on page 5.)
Greater Sandusky
The Greater Sandusky Club has
been busy with a couple of their
fundraisers. Their Club sells
Gourmet Nuts. This fundraiser
is winding down after starting
out with over 1,000 cans of nuts
to sell! Plans are now in full
swing for their Yellow Rose
Greetings, Zontians:
Below are updates from Area
1 Clubs.
Bowling Green
Bowling Green has been busy
planning our upcoming Area
1 Meeting scheduled for
Saturday, March 16, at the
Simpson Building Meeting
Room, 1291 Conneaut Ave.,
in Bowling Green. The Agen-
da includes Senator Teresa
Fedor’s presentation on Child
Marriage, Time for Sharing

2:00 p.m. Attendees are
asked to WEAR GREEN!!
Defiance
The Zonta Club of Defiance
hosted their first Human
Trafficking Seminar on Janu-
ary 10th. Their speakers
were Tim Wedge from Defi-
ance College and Steven
Mueller from the Defiance
County Sheriff’s Department.
(See photos, above.) A most
powerful testimony was given
by a mother whose daughter
is a trafficking victim. Spe-
cial guests to the event in-
cluded Margot Hoffman,
Zonta District 5 Governor,
and State Representative
Craig Riedel.
Brunch to be held on Saturday,
April 6, at the Sandusky Yacht
Club located at 529 East Water
Street in Sandusky. Doors Open
at 10:30 a.m. with Brunch start-
ing at 11:30 a.m. (See photos
on page 5.)
The Program for the Club’s Janu-
ary Meeting was a live remote
presentation from Zonta District
5 Service Chair, Keri Dunn, enti-
tled Life in Liberia. (See photo,
above.) Keri is an advocate that
works in Liberia helping to bring
health care such as putting to-
gether a clinic with solar panels
for locals, donating menstrua-
tion management supplies, tak-
ing donations for schooling
costs and providing Fistula edu-
cation.
The Club’s Make a Smile Com-
mittee stated that they have
enough funding to help twelve
women/children/senior citizens
with their dental needs. They
are actively working to make
contact with those in need.
A $2,500 Scholarship was
awarded to Tamila Darling
who attends Ohio Business
College.
Toledo
The Zonta Club of Toledo
welcomed Ms. Leia Wen-
ninger, a 14-year-old Am-
bassador Girl Scout, as their
speaker at their monthly
Business Meeting in Febru-
ary. (See photo to the
right.) Ms. Wenninger
spoke to the group about her
Girl Scout Gold Project,
“Menstrual Matters”. She
shared with the Club the strug-
gles poor women and girls in the
third world countries, as well as
in the United States, are without
sufficient supplies to handle
their menstrual cycle. In many

African countries, girls who are
menstruating are thought to be
unclean and are not able to
attend school. As part of her
two-year Girl Scout project, Leia
makes re-usable pads and
sends them to girls in Kenya.
In the words of her mentor, this
girl is going to change the
world! More information can
be found on Leia’s project by
visiting Periods Worldwide and
Periods Toledo. Since Ms. We-
ninger is too young to receive
any of the Zonta Scholarships
at age 14, the Club was happy
to pass around a basket to
gather enough money to pay
for her next shipment to Kenya.

one of the girls to Commit-
tee Chair, Colleen Linhart.
She said that it was su-
perbly organized, thought-
provoking and appreciat-
ed that they honored their
time by staying on track.
Begun in 1980, well before
it was in vogue with the gen-
eral population and ZI’s
Young Professional member-
ship category, Zonta Club of
Columbus started the OYWL
Forum. Each year, guidance
counselors from Central
Ohio high schools nominate
a senior, a young woman for
recognition based on their
academics, leadership, and
community service.
The top 12 recipients and
their school officials were
invited to attend the Awards
Ceremony on Sunday, March
10th from 12:30-3pm,
where three scholarships will
be awarded, in the amounts
of $1,000, $500 and $250.

Area 3 Clubs of Ashtabula
Area, Cleveland and Hudson
held its 4th annual Phenome-
nal Woman event on Sunday,
March 3, 2019, at the recent-
ly renovated Marriott Cleve-
land East in Warrensville Hts.,
OH. This year’s theme was
“And Still We Rise.”
Started in 2016, the Area 3
Phenomenal Woman Event
celebrates International
Woman’s Day, which falls on
March 8. It is organized and
sponsored by the Area Direc-
tor and three of the four Zonta clubs in
Area 3. The event included a luncheon,
speakers and vendor browsing. In addi-
tion to at least ten outside vendors,
each of the clubs had a table to show-
case their activities and products. With
75 persons in attendance, D5’s Gover-
nor Margot Hoffman covered the ba-
sics and history of Zonta, from the
International to the Club’s levels, as
well as some of their activities.
The event started a week of celebra-
tions for IWD. It concludes with Zonta
Club of Cleveland sponsoring a table at One
World Shop in Rocky River, OH, on Saturday,
March 9. Celebrating 40 years, One World Shop
has been supporting fair trade artisans in 30+
developing countries.

Many of you will hear this
in the next month or so as
I attend each of the Area
Meetings and make my
membership presentation.
But, I watch closely the D5
membership report that
Zonta International sends
me every month. I am
happy to report that as a
district, we are slowly, but
surely, moving towards our
target of 15% net growth
at the end of this bienni-
um. So, with the member-
ship challenge in progress
for recruiting new members
and with renewals around
the corner, I urge you all
to keep up the momentum.
Thank you,

Dear District 5 Zontians:
On March 8 we celebrate Zonta
Rose Day in conjunction with
International Women’s Day.
This is a great opportunity to
show your support of Zonta’s
mission to empower women
worldwide, by honoring some-
one special in your life, with a
gift to the Foundation.
With each donation, you can
send your honoree a special
email with a personalized mes-
sage to let them know that they
have made a difference in your
life. Every donation you make
also goes towards our District 5
Goal for the biennium.
We are just $8,800 short of
meeting our year 1 contribu-
tion goal of $50,100. As a
reminder, we are targeting an
average contribution of $60
per member ($5 per month)
and $1,500 per club per year
to meet our biennium goal. I
know District 5 is up to the
challenge! I look forward to
seeing all of you next spring at
the Area Meetings. Until then,
Happy Rose Day!

Greetings, Zontians.
In my previous article, I
summarized the one-time
Centennial Anniversary
Grants program that ZI has
launched. To recap this
opportunity, Centennial
Anniversary Grants are
available to like-minded
charity/not-for-profit organi-
zations that partner with a
Zonta club to directly im-
prove women’s and girls’
lives in their community.
Applications will be accepted
from 15 September 2018 to
31 March 2019. No grants
will be awarded before 31
March 2019. To learn more
or to submit an application,
Similarly, as part of the cen-
tennial celebration, District 5
will honor like-minded indi-
viduals and organizations
outside of Zonta who have
made significant contribu-
tions to the empowerment of
women. Nominations are due
May 15 to me, at
([email protected]). The
nomination form has been sent
to the club Presidents and Area
Directors, and will soon be
posted on the District’s web-
site.
A few years ago as we began to
prepare for our Centennial An-
niversary, these International
Dolls were found along many
tubs of documents. (See
photo.) Our Centennial
Anniversary committee is
asking the membership if
they know when and why
these dolls were used in
District 5. What is the his-
tory of these international
dolls? If you would send a
few sentences to me, at
([email protected]) we
can record for our history.

As some of you may know and
recall, at our District 5 Confer-
ence in October, we made Days
for Girls kits. Approximately 100
kits were made.
Keri Dunn is our District 5 Ser-
vice Committee Chair and a
member of the Zonta Club of
Mid-Ohio Valley. (See story of the
live remote presentation spon-
sored by Zonta Club of Sandusky,
on page 2, titled Life in Liberia.)
We promised an update when
the Days for Girls kits were deliv-
ered to the women at the Fistula
Rehabilitation Center in Liberia.
This past week, Zontians and
friends have been following
Keri’s journey, via her Facebook
page. In one of her recent post-
ings, Keri advised:
“Productive day today! Went to
the Fistula Rehabilitation Center,
where we had a distribution for the
girls currently at the Center and
began working on making the kits.
I knew this was going to have its
challenges, but I had no idea that
learning to use scissors would be
one of them. Luckily, they pow-
ered through, every one contribut-
ed and it was a good day!
“The women here are so grateful
to be receiving help putting their
lives back together. They asked
me to ask my Zonta friends to
please not forget about them.”
As District 5 Gov. Margot Hoffman
stated, we are proud of you and
the work you are doing in Liberia,
Keri Dunn!
