Remarks:

A F-1 student wants to transfer to another school and asks, “What do I need to do?”

The student must report to your school by the program start date listed on his or her Form I-20. Reporting does not have to be in person, it may be via e-mail, telephone, and/or fax.

Shouldn’t students be required to complete a course of study at the school listed on their visa? The current regulations do not require F-1 students to complete a course of study at the school listed on his or her visa. Transfers and changes in programs of study for F-1 students do not have to be adjudicated. A student may transfer to any SEVP-certified school with an F-1 program that will accept the student.

TOEFL Preparation:

Business English:

Conversation & Fluency:

Cambridge Preparation Class for First Certificate of English Examination:

TESOL certification Course:

The beginner class focuses on basic grammar and simple comprehension of spoken and written English. No prior English study is necessary for this level. Course Objective: This class is an interdisciplinary course in beginning English with emphasis on grammar, listening, reading and conversational skills. By the end of this course, students should be able to read and understand basic articles in English and be able to communicate orally in a partially-fluent manner. Students will expand their knowledge of basic grammar and vocabulary and prepare themselves for an intermediate-level understanding and usage of English. Students will be exposed to basic sentence structure and will be provided the necessary grammatical tools with which to add more details and complexities to their spoken and written language skills. Students should be able to speak and write complete, though perhaps simple, sentences without error.

This level focuses on reading comprehension, building vocabulary, grammar, and conversation skills. Most students at this level have a good understanding of English and are often ready for standardized testing. Course Objective: This class is an interdisciplinary course in intermediate English with emphasis on grammar, listening, reading, writing and conversational skills. By the end of this course, students should be able to write complete, semi-complex sentences and be able to organize a paragraph. In addition, students should be able to understand most informal questions, statements, and conversation at normal speed. Through guided discussion activities, students will have learned to participate effectively in social and academic conversations. By having focused on more complex grammatical constructions, students should have the ability to use progressive forms of present, past, and future tenses.

Professional/college level conversation abilities and knowledge of the subtleties of English are necessary to succeed in this level. Advanced conversation, pronunciation, and reading comprehension are the main focuses of this level to enhance the students' grasp of English fluency. Course Objective: By the end of the this course, students should feel comfortable writing essays with good control of organization, extract key information from academic material, and speak fluently with only occasional misuse of idioms. Additionally, students will have complemented their understanding of colloquial language and will be able to correctly and effectively use grammar, punctuation, and spelling in all forms of writing. Students at this level are well on their way to fluency and should have the ability to thrive in social, professional, and academic settings.

Intermediate or Advanced level of EnglishThis class is for the English language learner who plans to take the iBT or paper based TOEFL test, a standardized test for non-native speakers wishing to transfer to a two- or four-year college in the U.S. The course focuses on the four elements of the TOEFL test: reading comprehension, writing, listening, and speaking. Integrated skills are now emphasized on the TOEFL test, which demand that students be able to read a passage, listen to a passage, and write an essay on the information. Several students in our TOEFL Program move up to the SDUIS University level of courses for a Bachelors, Masters, Ph.D. or Certificate.

Intermediate or Advanced level of EnglishThe Business English course offered at SDUIS allows students to gain a better understanding of English through the knowledge of practical, applied business practices. Students will learn a large variety of business information such as: administration, corporate strategy, marketing, sales, business etiquette, media, law, and creating a resume for job interviews. Students can write about multiple topics of interests and apply them to interviews, reviews, advice/opinion columns, and current events.

Intermediate or Advanced level of EnglishStudents will learn English for Conversation utilizing advanced pronunciation and recognition techniques, metaphor, symbolism, and imagery. Course will emphasize the importance of vocabulary, prepositions, and phrasal verbs. Class will also reinforce basic-advanced grammar as it is altered and modified for fluency.

Upper Intermediate or Advanced level of EnglishStudents will participate in an intensive program that prepares them to pass the Cambridge First Certificate of English Examination. Instruction is designed to prepare the students in the following areas: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Attaining the First Certificate in English is a world-wide reward that is a part of the University of Cambridge, ESOL Department. Several employers and universities officially recognize the FCE as a qualification in upper-intermediate English. The FCE also is a gateway to higher qualifications in English Proficiency.

Advanced level of EnglishThis is a 120 hour Certification program for the purpose of learning and understanding Teaching English as a Second Language. Course includes general teaching principles and techniques, philosophies, psychologies, troubleshooting, class preparation, focused learning, time management skills, and “hands-on” training credits obtained through a designated practice class. Students will learn how to find and apply for ESL employment in the United Stated and Abroad, as well as tips on the most successful ways to acquire job offers. A TESOL certificate is obtained upon successful completion of the course.
