ABOUT F. CHRIS GARCIA

F. Chris Garcia encouraged his students to become involved in local political trends,

and led by example, offering his political insight to various local TV stations for over

25 years and working with educational groups in and out of the state of New Mexico

to enhance the education of students. He has been an advisor to the Albuquerque

Public Schools Citizenship Committee as well as the City of Albuquerque Charter

Revision Taskforce. In 2005, he was awarded the title of Distinguished Professor, and

during the 2002 academic year served as the President of the University.

In addition to his contributions to the Academy, Garcia made significant

contributions to the political education of his students for over 40 years. Political

While his primary role in education was as a UNM Professor, F. Chris Garcia devoted

considerable time and attention to improving the greater educational landscape of

his community, and his contributions continue to be seen today. He followed up on

his findings 30 years later, when, in 2007, he published Hispanics and the U.S. He

has also been a prominent figure in the public policy activities within his native

Albuquerque community. Chris Garcia has worked with various groups within his

state local community to enhance the quality of education for students. In 1977, he

published his research on Latino politics in the United States in The Chicano Political

Experience: Three Perspectives. His study reflected the lack of political participation

and representation in American politics and urged greater involvement.
