This is to work alongside a team of other experienced RCW’s and Family Support Assistants within The Outback service which provides a wide range of support including individual support, supervised family time, parenting assessments, domiciliary care in the home and targeted work to support identified need in the family home. You will be required to have the confidence to challenge when necessary and to liaise with other professionals/colleagues and you will have the support of an experienced management team. An understanding and interest of the issues facing disabled young people is vital. This post requires an entry level qualification of ‘Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare’ (or equivalent). If you do not hold the qualification, you must be willing to work towards this once in post (within six months of the post commencing). The Outback is a resource within Derbyshire County Council’s Disabled Children’s Service. The requirements of the role of an RCW within The Outback are varied and a summary of some of the typical tasks and duties of the post are included below. The service generally covers the north of the county which is a large area that extends from Glossop in the north to South Normanton in the south, and from Shirebrook across into the Derbyshire Dales in the west. There are occasions however when we are required to support families in the south of the county also. Much of the work of The Outback is undertaken in the family homes of the children, their schools or local communities. Therefore it is essential that applicants are confident to travel around the county as required. Applicants should have a good understanding of the needs of disabled children, have a good range of communication skills and be very child-centred in their approach. The successful applicant will become involved in providing a range of services which could include the following: Short term pieces of work – These are support packages which are agreed in order to support specific targets that are identified either through safeguarding or child in need plans. The worker will work with family carers, offering support and advice around the identified targets. This could include the development of Positive Behaviour Support, supporting parenting skills, developing communication systems, developing interaction through play and leisure activities. Other work may include supporting introductions to other resources and services. In addition to having skills in relation to offering this type of support, workers need to be confident working with other professionals and agencies. Working with young people to offer support at The Outback or in the local community. This can include 1:1 or 2:1 work with young people with complex needs, this will often be with young people who present high levels of challenging behaviour. Supervision of ‘Family Time’. This is where a young person in Residential or Foster Care has planned supervised contact with parent(s) or other family members. This would include being involved in the planning for the session, ensuring the agreed arrangements are adhered to, and intervening if required to ensure the safety of the children. Workers need also to be able to undertake detailed recording of these sessions as they are often used as part of court proceedings. Undertaking parenting assessments as required by the Social Work team. These very detailed pieces of work could be used to identify areas where further support is required, or as part of Care Proceedings. This would usually involve direct work in the family home over a 12 week period. Workers need to be able to engage well with families and have good recording and report writing skills. To support Spire Lodge as and when required. This may be to support the transition of a young person into the service or to maintain staffing cover during times of staff shortage.
