Look Good In Yellow
The Fire Season approaches fast, even though it is raining as I write! Both Guilderton and Gingin West Fire Brigades are short of full time volunteers to man the fire trucks. If you are a fit person who is mainly available we NEED YOU. Last year both brigades could not always find crews to respond to local fires. Help is usually sent from Wanneroo but it takes more time. We have men and women on our phone lists but obviously some work during the day and others are mine workers. Quite a few others are getting older and cannot always respond.
We need men and women who are pretty much at home most days, a lot of retirees are fit, and after the kids go to school a lot of younger mums or dads could train up and help out. It is up to you, as yet the Government is not supplying this area with a paid fire service.
Fire Permits and Firebreaks
Hopefully everyone has burnt off dangerous areas and pits, however, if you have been on an extended holiday or have been ill, you will now need a fire permit to burn even a small fire.
Please remember your local Fire Officer is a volunteer and has a life. He may not be able to issue a permit immediately and will often need to make a visit, taking time out of his normal day - he goes shopping too! Think ahead because you also have to advise the Shire and your neighbours.
Firebreaks have to be installed before the 1st November, I have heard a rumour that there are to be no warnings given to people who do not comply and that the fine will be issued immediately, especially to those silly repeat offenders who think they can put all our lives at risk and ignore the order.
The Moore River News hopes that you have a safe fire season.
Woodridge Spring Fair Not long to go …. so keep Sunday 4 November free.
Swap meet stalls can be booked with Phyl on 9577 1574.
For Art and craft stalls call Nic on 9577 1404 or 0428 104 545.
The auction is filling up, so if you have anything you would like to donate, ring Maureen on 0428 104 545
Woodridge PO Box renters that ordered
the Advocate newspaper to be delivered weekly will have noticed recently that they got the North Coast Times delivered instead. Advocate Newspapers will be available on the newspaper stand outside the hall. Anyone wanting the North Coast Times put into their PO Boxes should contact CPA staff.

Lower Coastal Computer Session
The September group attempted to learn a little more about storing pictures into our computers.
We have grown in numbers as you can see from the picture. We could still do with more people who know a little to help people who are just starting out.
Our sessions are held on the first Thursday of every month at 9am, $4 with free tea and coffee.
The October session will concentrate on developing files and folders, and organising our computers. However beginners will be separated and helped by people willing to help, like Russel from Seabird, Margaret from Woodridge and Julie from Redfield Park who have volunteered to help Anne in future.
Most of the people who have attended the last few sessions have said they have gone home having learnt something. It is an enjoyable relaxed atmosphere and you are most welcome.

ST JOHN’S AMBULANCE
Four of our local volunteers for St John’s Ambulance have received their long service medals - Ann Wegner, Corrin Shields, Shirley Morris and Dave Stroud. Corrin and Dave went down to the Exhibition Centre to receive theirs. It was a proud moment to receive the applause of their comrades from all over country Australia. If you feel you could be part of this team, please call Margaret on 9577 1337 to find out more. We are in need of First Aiders.
The Woodridge Spring Fair is next month and the Moore River News needs your help. Can you ask your favourite store or business to donate a voucher for goods or services? Then post the vouchers into the silver box near the Woodridge PO Boxes or hand them into the staff at the Woodridge agency. They can also be posted to Moore River News, PO Box 2005, Woodridge WA 6041. These vouchers will then be auctioned off at the Spring Fair. The Moore River News printing has gone up to over $400 a month and we need your help to keep going.

CRAFTY PATCH NEWS A fantastic month was enjoyed by the Crafty Patch group of ladies with a large number working on their scrap-booking projects, knitting or cross stitching. Carroll’s card-making day was a great success with ladies learning techniques and making a variety of Christmas cards. Our “Machine Day” had an air of frivolity while ladies worked on their various sewing projects. With Xmas on the minds of many, Rae has organised next month’s sewing project with an easy peasy table runner which has many contemplating their fabrics and threads. As there was no power at the Woodridge Hall on Tuesday 25th September, the crafty ladies - always looking for some fun and a chat - headed off for a delightful lunch at the Yanchep Inn. A craft crawl is being organised for the end of October which has everyone excited with suggestions of possible venues and guessing as to what surprises are install for our very jolly and noisy group of ladies. Crafty Patch ladies have remarked on the changes taking place at the entrance to Woodridge, as the Wanneroo Road and King Drive are being extensively upgraded in an effort to improve road safety due to the increased volume of fast traffic and the difficulties faced by local residents trying to turn into King Drive or Wanneroo Road. Please take care in this area as road works are being undertaken for some time. There are many talented ladies enjoying a variety of crafts and ideas so why not come along and enjoy a cuppa and a laugh - you are very welcome to join us on Tuesday mornings. Alwyn, Bev M and Mary L

IN MEMORIAM
PETER CAUST A large number of locals went to Pinnaroo on the 17th September to say farewell to Peter Caust who lived in Sovereign Hill and died the previous week. Peter was only 67 and spent most of his life as a soldier in the army serving two tours in Vietnam.
His RSL mates were there in force. Colleagues from both Guilderton and Gingin West Fire Brigades paid tribute to a man who more often than not responded straight away to calls to fight fires.
Many Sovereign Hill residents were there and remembered Peter for his lovely garden, his bird aviaries and his love of his pet dog. Peter will be sorely missed.

Ratepayers are advised that rubbish will now be collected on Public Holidays instead of the next day, with the exception of Christmas Day; rubbish to be collected on Christmas Day will still be collected the following day.
This means that rubbish will be picked up on your nominated collection day regardless of whether it is a public holiday. The exception to this being Christmas Day.
The Friends of Moore River Estuary congratulate the Shire on their assessment of the submissions to the revised Outline Development Plan of the Moore River Company. The Shire will not endorse this ODP until many conditions are met. FOMRE are still concerned that many scientific points, especially those made by DEC, have not been made mandatory on the developer. This ODP remains a very bad Plan. MRC own plenty of degraded land yet they intend 'developing' Pristine and Excellent bushland which is worth saving as important habitat for our native species. FOMRE are asking the WA Planning Commission to be sure that any approved development is confined to already degraded farmland, for the protection of the river and the bush. This will also allow a 'wildlife corridor' all the way from Wilbinga to the Moore River. The proposed 'footprint' of this plan therefore needs changing.
We also think that any development should have to meet contemporary planning standards to allow the current proposal to be approved simply because mistakes in approvals were made in the past, is not very wise.
FOMRE will continue to fight so that any development is sympathetic to this area. This is no place for another suburb.
We hope you agree.

FOR ALL YOUR NEEDS
The Meet and Greet Club and some new friends went in three cars over to Bindoon on the
13th September to the Wildflower Festival. It was a beautiful sunny day and we went on a coach trip with a very knowledgeable lady called Jacqui who lives in Bindoon. We learnt a lot about some of the wildflowers in our own gardens, and more. The display in the hall was lovely and some of us posed for a photo in front of the display on the stage. Meet and Greet meet on the second Thursday in the month at the Woodridge Hall at 10am. Sometimes we play board games and some months we organise trips like this one. Please do come along if you would like some social interaction locally. We have been to concerts, the local botanic golf, local restaurants and wineries.

Press Release
Regeneration of Degraded Land North of the Guilderton Town site
In 2011 the Guilderton Community Association committed itself to a programme to address serious land degradation north of the groyne; about 1.5km north of the town. The proliferation of tracks and the destruction of unique native vegetation is considered of grave concern as well as the increase in size of two blow-outs.
The proliferation of off road vehicles coupled with inexperienced drivers creates a major hazard for coastal areas and particularly those, such as Guilderton, close to the metropolitan area. While some of the damage is a result of ‘hoons’ who regard the area as a race track, most is a consequence of recreational drivers who are blithely unaware of the consequences of their actions. Often in the holiday season you will see 4wds lined up by the lighthouse all set for a bush adventure but sadly lacking the knowledge of driving in loose, dry sand. Our aim is to change that.
In conjunction with the Gingin Shire, the Northern Agricultural Catchment Council and the Department of Environment and Conservation, a plan has been developed primarily based upon an educative approach using interpretative signage that will provide advice for driving in sand such as the need to reduce tyre pressures and similar measures. The signage will also outline the conservation values of the area and in particular, the endangered species. It will also indicate where and why tracks have been closed.
A number of the tracks which duplicate the main track or provide bypasses will be closed to allow regeneration. The main track providing access to the Three Mile Reef and Seabird will remain open, providing some excellent 4wd challenges and access to some extraordinarily beautiful country.
While it is anticipated that most people will adhere to requests to stay on the established tracks, a couple of kilometres of cable fencing will be erected to protect the most vulnerable areas. Stage two of the plan is to establish a walking trail with interpretive signage identifying points of interest and the various plant species.
To date there has been a trial re-planting of native vegetation near the southerly blowout and this will be monitored in terms of species suited to extreme conditions.
The Guilderton Community Association thanks DEC for the provision of labour to build the fences, NACC for providing the resources to purchase the fencing material, signage and the replanting and to the President, CEO and staff of the Gingin Shire for their enthusiasm and commitment to this project. Finally, without the drive of Ashley Robb from NACC and the resources he has been able to muster, this project would still just be a good idea, and the destruction of our environment would have continued apace.
