Exploring

Engineering

An amazing experience for young minds to

come, grow, and learn about all facets of en-

gineering. This week long camp provides hands-

on experiences so students can explore the

world of engineering and discern if a particu-

lar field of engineering is right for them.

The camp provides actual engineers as mentors

and volunteers desiring to share their expe-

riences with like-minded youth consider-

ing a future in an engineering field. It also pro-

vides a variety of learning experiences via inter-

views with engineers, exploration of specific

fields in the STEM world, as well as hands on

activities hosted by engineering businesses all

over metro Atlanta.

Exploring Engineering

Highlights

In 2013 the Exploring Engineering Academy was

able to host 52 high school students, repre-

senting 4 different states. There were around

30 Volunteers representing all different fields of

engineering from businesses throughout Metro-

Atlanta. The youth and volunteers toured around

30 businesses and had special events where they

spoke with Georgia Tech students or engineers

Students visited the Georgia Aquarium and were provid-

ed a behind-the-scenes tour of one of the most unique

aquariums in the nation. Students took a look at the

training of the beluga whales, the growing process for

real live coral, the large animal transportation shaft, and

Youth also gained an in-depth look at Georgia Tech’s

campus and living quarters. They had the advantage of

meeting with several engineering students to talk

about their college experiences at Georgia Tech as well

as how each of the students chose to become a Geor-

gia Tech student. Tours and activities took place all

over the campus to provide our students with a first-

hand look at all that the campus has to offer and the

many specialty programs one can be a part of if ad-

mitted to the Georgia Tech community. These Experi-

ences allowed students to gain a better understanding

of the work load, community, and life-time of memo-

The 2014 Exploring Engineering Acad-

emy will proudly offer space for over

70 high school students and around

20 volunteers at any given time.

We will be lodging in one of the tradi-

tional dormitories on the Georgia

Tech Campus and taking 2 busses to

our locations all over metro-Atlanta.

The students will be having Dinner

with a Professional where they can

meet and greet with an established

engineer, attending an Atlanta Braves

game, interviewing an engineer from

the Six Flags Over Georgia Amuse-

ment park before getting to ride the

rides, and much, much more.

Past Exploring Engineering Academy students have had the op-

portunity to visit well known businesses such as:

Georgia power: Electro-Magnetic Fields

Emory: Bio-Medical Engineering

MARTA: Transportation and Mechanical Engineering

GE Digital Energy: Grid IQ Center

Lockheed Martin: Aeronautical Engineering

These locations and many others opened their doors to the youth

to offer a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn and grow in engi-

neering experiences as a high-school student.
